《A Dragon Idol's Reincarnation Tale》Chapter 3: I’m a strawberry lover now.

Three nights have passed since I made this berry bush into my new home. If you were to ask me what I did in these past days, then I would have you look at the once abundant strawberry bush, that looks like a normal bush now.

I guess it should be expected, but even stuff like strawberries taste different compared to those from Earth. Extremely sweet but, boy, do they make you feel refreshed. I’ve solely eaten them for these past nights without having to worry about anything else, and I’ve been living the life with them.

Does that make me sound lazy? Think again and have a look at this!

Staying in a safe location sounds all good and awesome, but there is really nothing to do. I’m too scared to move out and this bush isn’t equipped with a TV nor a laptop.

It got me thinking of practicing healing myself to prepare for the next emergency. Now, I know self-mutilation isn’t a good thing to do, but without any way to tell me about the efficiency of the spell, I would be risking my life, if I don’t experiment now.

I was actually that bored that I did this for the whole day, which rewarded me with [Physical Resistance Lv. 2], [Pain Resistance Lv. 2], [Mana Control Lv. 2] and [Holy Magic Lv. 3].

I also found out that I can increase the amount of mana spent in a spell to increase its potency, but I quickly learned that the mana cost to performance ratio difference between [Minor Heal] and [Modest Heal] was large enough that my it was overall more efficient to use my new spell. Maybe it'll change after I get some other spells, but currently using [Modest Heal] for healing is best.

Seriously, with all the magic and status, this world just makes me wish this was just a dream about a video game I once played but having to live in this place for 3 days has made me realize that complaining is just useless.

I’ve managed to handle myself with some of the information I got from watching those fake survival shows, but this is a situation a city girl like me shouldn’t have to experience! You don’t get wilderness survival training in New York!

Sigh, but complaining about it won’t do. There is nobody to ask for help, so I need to do it myself. I can’t search up for researched and tested information, so I need to experiment by myself.

There is also the fact that I had to get used to even living outside. Food was sorted with the strawberries, and as they also contained a decent amount of liquids, I also had no problems staying hydrated considering how small I am.

Temperature-wise, it is rather warm but it's nothing problematic, on the contrary, the warmer the day the more comfortable it is for me. Maybe it’s ‘cause lizards are cold-blooded, and I'm a lizard, dragon thing now? Are dragons even cold-blooded?

Unfortunately, that was all the good things about this life. What’s so bad?

I have no access to water. No water sources. That means no showers or baths. It feels disgusting to not clean yourself even for a single day, and I’m expected to continue doing this?! It gets even worse when nature calls.

Use leaves, you say?

…Uh, my…my front legs are too short which means I need to bend my body, including my head. It’s not a welcoming sight…

Argh! You should know what I’m talking about, ok! Dude, it’s not fun feeling filthy, especially for this extended amount of time! Take it and leave this topic to rest!

I would also like to remind you that I’m quadrupedal now, which means I have to walk on all four legs. Do you know how awkward it feels to relearn how to walk? What I noticed from surviving that chase was that four legs are not easy to get used to.

My center of mass is different and knowing when to put one leg forward without ruining my balance or entangling it with my body, required a lot of practice and I fell on the ground, rolling on the dirt, quite a few times.

I’ve gotten used to it, but all t-the dirt is sticking between my scales and claws. A-And this bush is where I do my business. Everything is in a corner, but I can’t help but feel that my home stinks like shit…literally.

Then there is also the fact that I haven't been able to sleep in these past days. It's nerve-wracking, to say the least. Weird sounds coming from every direction; sometimes the wind, sometimes monsters.

I can’t relax my mind at all, and I had to do my best to preoccupy myself with training and theory crafting, as I would otherwise fall back into complaining about this whole situation.

Just like what I’m doing right now.

Everything about this whole situation is fucked up!

Verdammte Scheiße!

Why the hell am I stuck in this godforsaken place all alone, without any kinda help!

Why the fuck, am I stuck in this hobbit reptile's body when literally everything else is bigger than me!

Fuck those lizards, that are supposedly my parents, for dumping me like trash!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Ok, deep breaths.

In…and out.

In…and out.

We’ve gotten over complaining about this.

This is why I am doing my best to stave off boredom, as a way to avoid thinking about reality, with training.

For one, training helps improve my stats. For example, using mana increases your maximum capacity. Even getting hurt or attacking improves the stats involved with it, like biting myself increased both Strength and Vitality. Even a simple sit-up will show some results.

The second reason is that it would feel wrong to not try to improve my profile. I’ve recently only had time for mobile games, but I used to enjoy RPG video games quite a lot, so my competitive side of trying to find a way to improve myself surfaced.

However, these quiet days are soon to come to an end. The problem that has plagued humanity since its inception: food. The strawberry bush is nearly exhausted, and I can't find another one. I could wander around in search of a new bush, but that is literally suicide for me ‘cause everything is a threat to me.

Driven by desperation and hunger, I have come to finally make up my mind. I need to hunt.

Four days without any kinda protein was awful, but I really wasn’t in the mood to have to do it. I’m currently only a few days old, and I can’t grow up properly only on strawberries, so I guess this situation was inevitable.

The only solace I found in all of this, is that I’m quite curious about the leveling system, so that does mean that I have to do it…I need to kill.

At first, I was really apprehensive about the idea, but I got used to it after thinking about it a bit more.

Man, it surprised me how I was able to just accept this reality. What student randomly decides that she wants to kill for her dinner today? Is it ‘cause I’m a dragon now? Dragons are considered monsters in this world, right? I guess a monster would feel normal about killing others. Speaking of monsters, my target has arrived.

It’s a rabbit with a pair of deer antlers. It looks about the size of a normal bunny, but it’s kinda hard for me to tell.

Inspecting myself, my new body, a standard looking black lizard, would fit perfectly in an adult’s hand. An apt description would be that I look like a baby Komodo dragon, while that bunny would overflow on a human’s hand with all that fluffy fur.

Anyways, during my time in this bush, multiple of these monsters have been wandering around this area. Probably looking for food. So, I left my last strawberry in front of this bush to lure them. I’ll cover my presence and sneak attack it, while it’s snacking on the last berry. It’s simple but it should work.

Come closer rabbit!

The rabbit is treading towards me, while still being on guard. I swallowed my saliva, waiting for it to come close. This was my last piece of food that I was sacrificing as bait, so I have to make this count, otherwise, we have to wander around in search of food, which I really would like to avoid.

Ok, it’s coming closer. Activate the skill [Stealth] properly and slow down your breath. Just stay calm. You can do it, girl.

…Now, Shine!

“Eiiih!” casting my spell from my tail, a bright light burned the eyes of the rabbit, just a few feet away from my bush.

Normally, the spell [Shine] requires relatively little mana to cast a small light source, however, pump up the mana amount and it can act as a flashbang. Using my tail to cast it behind me prevents blinding myself.

“Kriiiie!” jumping out of the bush, I poured mana through my jaw and crunched the rabbi’s throat with my fangs.

I recently confirmed that using [Mana Control], I can empower my body by spending mana. Back then, I was able to run faster ‘cause I powered up my legs, and now I was squeezing the life out of this rabbit with my bite.

It was struggling and trying to throw me off, but the surprise attacks seem to have stolen most of its strength already. Without being able to breathe in properly, it couldn't summon the appropriate power to defend itself.

Urrrgh, please just stop moving. Urgh, come on…please, die!

“Eiiii…”

Experience has reached multiple breaking points. [Dragon Hatchling *] has risen from [Level 0] to [Level 4] Attributes have increased due to level up Acquired 400 skill points Acquisition requirement fulfilled. [Mana Strike Lv. 1] acquired Proficiency requirement fulfilled. [Stealth Lv. 3] evolved into [Stealth Lv. 4]

Sorry…

The warm blood of the rabbit spilled into my mouth, giving me my first taste of raw blood, as the thick fluid filled my mouth and slowly seeped down my throat. I had to spit it all out, coughing as my throat tried to clean me from this foreign blood.

It was disgusting, but this is nothing compared to the feeling of just breaking the neck of something with your…teeth. How it kept struggling until the very last moment I crunched his neck into fragments. I should try my best not to kill with my mouth again.

On the other hand, the feeling of leveling up was a great ecstasy. My body was filling up by an alien energy, as my strength started to recover and grow.

Anyways, Profile.

Now, this looks much better. It's also good to know that you get a full mana recovery when you level up.

Furthermore, the leveling up gave me 100 skill points per level up, which nets me with 400 points to spend. Everything was greyed out when I wanted to check the skill list for the first time. I hope I have enough points for some good skills, especially combat-related ones, ‘cause I’m sure ambushing won’t always be available as an option.

Skill List Open.

Oof, my head hurts from all those skills appearing. Is there any way to sort them?

Display the lowest available skills.

Skill List Sort by: Lowest available skills Cost: 50 SP [Fire Magic] [Earth Magic] [Identify] [Unarmed Technique] [Enhanced Claws] [Enhanced Fangs] [Enhanced Enemy Sense]

Nice, first try.

Surprisingly, there are quite a lot of skills for the mere cost of 50 skill points. Isn’t my current amount enough to buy all of them at once? There are some useful sounding skills for a mere 50 SP, like being able to sense enemies and use magic.

What a discount!

If I were born in a safer environment, for example with my new parents, then I could have gotten…I should stop thinking about these useless “if” moments. Live in the moment. I don't have the luxury to imagine what could be when I'm still not accustomed to any of this.

Let’s also stop calling them my “parents”. I only have one pair of parents and that won’t change.

The rabbit had to be bled out before a big monster comes over. I heard that meat tastes terrible if you don't bleed the animal out. I could just eat it raw, but now that I know which skills I can buy, I believe we could make something nice. So, I bought the needed skills to do it.

From the lowest available skills category, I took [Fire Magic], [Earth Magic], [Identify] and [Enhanced Enemy Sense]. I didn’t take the rest ‘cause I found some useful ones among the 100 SP group. Those would be [Cooking] and [Dismantle]. The former group will help me kill stuff, while the latter will help me avoid food illnesses.

Would you like to buy [Fire Magic] [Earth Magic] [Identify] [Enhanced Enemy Sense] [Cooking] [Dismantle] for a combined amount of 400 SP? Your current SP is 400

Ja.

You have bought [Fire Magic Lv. 1] [Earth Magic Lv. 1] [Identify Lv. 1] [Enhanced Enemy Sense Lv. 1] [Cooking Lv. 1] [Dismantle Lv. 1]. Your current SP is 0 Magic gained: [Fire] [Earth Wall]

With [Dismantle Lv. 1] I decapitated the rabbit with my claws and scraped the fur off.

…I cannot tell your how disturbing this feels. The smell of iron quickly assaulted my nose, and I think I have to actually puke this time. A shiver ran down my body as I saw the pool of blood growing and growing, stopping when the puddle was large enough for me to bath in it.

Ewwww.

Once bled out, I cast [Fire], from my new [Fire Magic Lv. 1], on the soft rabbit fur, using it as kindling to make an impromptu fireplace. Then I sliced the meat into smaller pieces and skewered them on a branch, making kebab, and laid them over the flame.

Compared to the fur, I think I did a better job with cutting the meat. These small claws are surprisingly sharp.

Mhmm, it’s starting to smell appetizing. I bet [Cooking Lv. 1] is making it smell better than it deserves to be without any spices. Not even salt, meeeeh.

…Should be finished now. I expect it to be bland, but the dripping juices tell my nose otherwise. Thanks for the food!

Oh, expectations averted. The meat is slightly tough, but the juices just stimulate my tongue with the familiar taste of fat. It’s not bland at all, but I can’t say the meal is delectable. But then again, considering there wasn’t any salt in the cooking process, it’s a miracle for it to come out edible.

[Cooking Lv. 1] is quite a cheat. I wonder what I can do with strawberries.

…Could I make the organs look edible with this skill? I'm a bit apprehensive about consuming them, but I shouldn't waste food. Even if it looks less than desirable…gulp, I don’t know when I will get another chance to eat meat.

Oh, what if I covered the organs with meat and skewer them? It would look similar enough to a döner kebab.

…I shouldn’t drool…
