Winston looked at Harry's gun. It was a German officer's
pistol - a Luger. "Where did you get this from I wonder."

A barrage of shell bursts had kept everyone's head low
and hidden the sound of Harry shooting himself.
Winston took the gun from Harry's hand and rolled
his body into the stream.

He's been imprisoned, gained and lost comrades, been betrayed... The whole lot. By now, all he wants is to put it all behind him, something the world doesn't seem to want to let him.
