《Hunting His Prey》Chapter 37

I follow close behind Zane, as we make our way through our home. It's funny in a matter of days I have come to think of it that way. Looking around the living area, with the attached open concept kitchen. The low cave ceilings, and the beauty that was once nothing more than a black cave. I hope with everything I am that we will be able to return here soon.

Everyone is outside the opening of the cave, as we make our way through the door, out of the small tunnel and into the light. Those that are going with us, are all standing there. My mouth falls open as it's not the men I was expecting to see, but their wolves in their places.

Looking back at Zane he has a playful smirk on his lips. He simply shrugs his shoulders, as his hand reaches out to twirl of a piece of my wayward hair around a finger. "I told you I have a plan to get there much faster." I nod my head, looking back at all the wolves. Wondering which one is who.

I quickly figure out which is Ethan, as my best friend hops onto the back of the black and gray wolf that was standing beside her. These wolves are humongous. I feel like they are much bigger than mine. At least twice the size of her.

"That's only because you were not around me all that time. She will grow exponentially now that we are together. Becoming just as large as the rest of us." Zane whispers in my ear, as his arm comes around my center, pulling me close to the front of his body.

I lay my head upon his shoulder, closing my eyes to take this moment all in. His woodsy scent missed with the soap of palm springs he uses washes over me, calming me down instantly. "Come on baby we have to get going before darkness falls." He nips the tip of my ear as he speaks the words.

Opening my eyes, I lift my body away from his and walk further outside. I see Lilly standing beside my Uncle Daneth at the side. She's rubbing her hand along the fur of his head, he has ducked down basking in her touch. I know he craves her, just as much as Zane and I do of one another, but it is strictly forbidden for a werewolf to be with a human.

Looking back at Zane, I watch as he lifts a hand to my face and wipes away a lone tear. I hadn't felt the sensation of crying, I was so wrapped in my thoughts. He brings his face closer to mine, so he can kiss my lips in a sweet kiss that only makes me crave more. Leaning his forehead against mine, he closes his eyes and basks in our moment.

"Everything will be different soon." He whispers for my ears alone. When he opens his eyes and looks down at me, I see the honesty held deep in his eyes. He means every word he says. My brows furrow with confusion, however, as I wonder how he plans on changing rules that have been in place since the beginning of time for our species.

With a tilt of his head, a predatory smirk grows along his lips. "Believe me baby girl." He bends closer to my face, so close I can feel the movement of his lips across mine. "I got this in the bag." His cocky tone has me shaking my head. I don't question him, the nerves returning yet again. My stomach feels like it's in knots.

I turn toward Lilly, hating to break up their moment, but needing to say my goodbyes. She must see me from the corner of her eye, as her hands fall to her sides. She faces me head on, wiping her silent tears away. Walking closer, I can hear the whimper of my Uncles wolf, the sound breaking my heart all over again.

Once standing in front of him, I reach my hand out and pat his head in condolences. I wish I could be here for him more, but I don't know how to be. There's nothing I, or anyone, can do about their situation right now. Unless they want to have a relationship in secret.

Afterall, I have broken one of the most important laws of our people. I changed a human into a werewolf just a couple days ago. Which brings an idea to mind. I look from Lilly to my uncle, and they both must see the wheels churning inside my head. Lilly pops her hip out, placing her hand there.

She looks at me with squinted eyes, and I know a lecture is about to come on. "Don't even think about it little girl." Ooh, she called me the nickname she gave both me and Claudette when we do something wrong or are about to. "We have already talked about that years ago, but we both agree we want to do this the right way."

I look from her to my uncle, seeing both agony and anger staring back at me. Shrugging my shoulders I tell them both honestly, "I already broke the highest law of the werewolf people. If I'm going to die for it sometime soon, I may as well turn you too and get a good outcome from it."

"So we can be on the run for the rest of our lives?" Lilly asks. I give her a sad smile. "You mean like we all will be anyway if this doesn't go according to their plan." I bite out the words as I wave my hand in the direction of Zane and the other wolves. She looks behind me, studying every single one with her eyes.

"This will work. I know it will." She says back to me, lifting my hands within her own and kissing my fingers. "What will work?" I ask the question knowing well enough that she won't tell me. No one has told me a single thing about what they have planned for this trip. "You will see when it's time." She winks at me. Avoiding my question just as everyone else in this pack has. Rolling my eyes, I pull her in for a hug.

"How did I know you would give me the run around." I say sarcastically. Causing her to laugh out loud. When she pulls back, I see the humor return to her eyes once more. "I'll see you all soon." She promises, her words come out fiercely. She really believes that. I kiss the palm of her hand one final time, before turning around, giving the woman who has become like my mother my back.

Getting closer to Zane, now in wolf form, I await for him to lay along the ground. Hopping onto his back, I cannot bring myself to look back at the woman who is a big part of my soul. I don't want her to see my silent tears. I feel if I look at her now it will feel like this will be the last time I ever see her again.

Burying my face into the fur of his neck I hold on for dear life. Knowing good and well that he's about to speed through these trees. Sure enough, with a howl to the darkening sky, the rest join in as we begin our journey. Zane speeding through the trees, making them look like green blurs surrounding us all.
