《Molting the Mortal Coil》Chapter 891 - Schools

Even on the Inner World, Sage’s time was limited. Especially considering his personal lack of talent. As he’d discovered many years ago, the Spiritual Root was the source of ‘talent’ and it was essentially the level of perception related to Qi and somehow related to the connection between the body and soul. In a way, Sage’s lack of talent was like trying to perform precision tasks with bad vision. With enough practice he could assemble a watch full of tiny interconnecting gears and parts, but it would be many times easier for someone with very sharp vision and a magnifying glass.
Sage’s lack of talent meant he took hundreds of times longer than ‘geniuses’ to learn and master different techniques. The Inner World giving him hundreds of times longer to practice only served to level the playing field with those greatest of talents. There was no way he would dare to try and learn every possible technique he had access to. There were many legends of Cultivators using only a single simple technique and constantly training and improving it until it took them to the highest levels of power. It was only after his Thermal Law exceeded his Corruption Law that he dared to diversify from the path of the Jade Mantle that he’d been focusing on.
In fact, Sage wished he could focus more of his efforts upon mastering the Heavenly Materials that he had acquired. There were many Cultivators that focused all their efforts upon one and had greatly exceeded all their peers because of their unique abilities. The problem was that they acted differently on the Inner World in comparison to the outside world which meant he couldn’t take advantage of the faster time frame to practice with them. It was somewhat disappointing, but he was stuck between using a stronger weapon versus one he had deep experience and practice with. Thinking this far, Sage realized that as he deepened his familiarity with fire and water controlling techniques it also benefited his control of the fire and water Heavenly Materials.
Seems this change was for the better after all.

While training hard on the Inner World, Sage started to travel again on the outside world. He stopped in Black Cloud again to do some business, selling off a large quantity of materials. The multi-year gap was an excuse for him to build up a large store again so the shops wouldn’t be suspicious. He had already made great gains from the thermal vent and it would likely take decades more to make marginal improvements. Instead he continued on his trip, traveling from one Depths city to the next to build up his supply of Spirit Pearls and Stones. He stopped worrying about catching fish or exploration and purely traveled from one city to the next at his top speed. There were a few close calls with high tier Demonic Beasts, but he was able to shoot away from them all and continue onwards.
Sage acted just like the traveling caravans in the Depths, making a full circuit a few times faster than they usually did, completing the loop in a single year rather than two or three. Along the way he purchased techniques to improve the Lang Clan library, sold goods to the shops, and left behind agents. After seeing their effectiveness first hand in Oyster Quay, Sage realized he was being silly by collecting all the information himself.
There was just something romantic about going into seedy bars and meeting random strangers to gather information. While it wasn’t impossible, it was much easier for those who’d spent their lives perfecting these skills. It wasn’t that he couldn’t gather information himself, it was just much faster for these agents to do. There was also the fact that there were many of them and only one of him. There was even the added benefit that some of them would take more drastic approaches that were many times more dangerous. Sage was always wary of accidentally offending some terrible old monster so he wouldn’t dare to randomly kidnap or brainwash a stranger to gather information, but some of the daring agents did it almost exclusively.
It was far more efficient for him to just release a dozen agents into each city of the Depths and then hurry on his way. They had communication tools and worked in multiple cells so they couldn’t all be compromised at the same time. There were also those that specialized in earning money and they worked together with those that trained new agents to replenish any losses they might suffer. As long as they weren’t unlucky it would only take a few years for fully fledged intelligence networks to form in each of these cities. Chances are some of them would get wiped out, but perhaps with time the more successful teams would send more agents to the cities where they’d failed to be established.

Sage didn’t bother to micro-manage them, nor did he bother with any specific instructions. They were all trained to do this sort of thing, adapting to the local circumstances and insinuating themselves carefully. Eventually they’d get in touch with other groups nearby and then perhaps reconnect with the Lang Clan on the outside world, but there was no telling how long that would take. It was simply too expensive to give them the communication tools that linked all the way back to the Lang Clan. The Messaging Jades of that level used very high ranking materials and there was also the fact they came in matched pairs. One of that pair would have to get sent all the way back to the Lang Clan. They would just have to work in isolation for now. Upon returning to the clan, Sage would have jades sent out to the successful teams.
With that thought in mind he returned to the same tavern that he had first arrived at more than fifteen years ago. The local headquarters of the Merciful Mollusk. Sage had arrived in Deep Shore all that time ago and it was from these strange floating octopus people, the Gilogos, that he learned the rules of the Depths. He’d inserted himself into a few conflicts but compared to the earlier adventures in his life, the Depths actually turned out to be something of a vacation for him.
Haha, to think that fighting giant monsters deep under the sea for a decade would become a vacation for me. I’ve come so far from those days of being trapped in a mine and coming out to find my clan completely destroyed.
Others might think he’d come quite far in a few centuries, but he knew the real turning point was the many millenia he’d spent on the Inner World. Changing the Twin Soul into a Soul Clone and permanently stationing it on the Inner World was the real turning point for him to become a real powerhouse. Not only did it empower him, but all that time also served to change his mindset. He’d spent so long on the run and in fear that finally getting hundreds of years in complete safety to raise a family had finally soothed all those mental wounds. He was finally secure enough to pursue his real dreams. He let his descendants take over for the heavy obligation the ancient ancestors had put on his shoulders and went off to explore the world.
This first venture out into the world without having to worry about rebuilding the Lang Clan and constantly in fear of being hunted down was very liberating. The enemies he made were because of his own choices and the risks he took were because he chose to take them, not thrust upon him by old enemies of his family or those who targeted him for his abilities. The Depths was filled with so many foreign cultivators and controlled by a greater power. The neutrality and diversity there was very refreshing. He was targeted for his wealth, not for his name or what powers he had.
Unfortunately, it was time to return to the ‘real’ world.
Sage stepped into that secluded chamber in the Merciful Mollusk and held up the token he’d paid a large sum for. An unusual form of energy spilled out of the token and wrapped around his body, shielding him as the Transportation Formation sprung to life and shot him through space.

Blood Demon's Retirement
Civil War had raged on the Al-Shan Archipelago for the past four decades, only recently coming to an end with the enthronement of the new Emperor. This is not his story. The Blood Demon, renowned general of said civil war, was tired of all the fighting and politicking that had described the last four decades of her existence. All she really wanted to do now is to go out into the world and see the many lands from her father's stories. Thus she retired, and went and did exactly what she wanted. This is the story of what happens when you toss a (retired) war machine with somewhat lacking common sense into an unsuspecting world at peace. Chapters will range from 1-2.5k words, scheduled for release every day from Monday to Friday. First time posting a story on Royal Road here, hoping you folks will enjoy. Expect: -slow going slice of life with occassional faster paced action -world building -detailed anecdotes on the world, its races, the magic system, and whatnot every now and then Do not expect: -romance, other than maybe some passing mentions -politics, again, barring passing mentions Any comments, reviews, and criticism will be much appreciated. And thank you for reading. ---------------------------- Disclaimer: This story is my original work and only posted on the Royal Road and Scribblehub websites. Thief of Time
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Book 1: The Legend of Tot Synopsis: Claud Primus, a self-declared master thief, has a simple goal. To live forever. It's a rather easy task, for miraculous objects called lifestones are able to extend one's lifespan. These lifestones are best found in the treasuries of nobles, lovely resorts that Claud pays a visit to every so often. Unfortunately, one of those nightly visits go awry, and Claud is forced to escape with just a single lifestone and a box in hand. Normally, that's when things die down. The guards yawn, the gates close, and the night continues. But this time, the night isn't that forgiving. A dozen schemes result in the murder of someone important, and with a convenient scapegoat — Claud — at hand, it doesn't take long for him to be framed as a heinous criminal, wanted for the indirect murder of someone high up...and it just gets worse from there. Book 2: The Moon Lords' Rise Synopsis: As ordered chaos sweeps across Licencia, Claud leaves for Julan Barony, intent on making some profits there. Accompanied by the erstwhile heiress of Julan, a fellow member of the Moon Lords, the two plot against the barony's wealth...as well as a promise to bring about its downfall. Meanwhile, back home, the Moon Lords have busied themselves with digesting their gains. Eyes, however, are beginning to turn to this proverbial fish in a small pond. The fishermen are coming. When they cast their hook, what will Dia and the others do? Book 3: Murders under the Moons Synopsis: In the sleepy town of Nachtville, where Claud and Lily are forced to stop at, a set of nasty murders occurs. Victims scream out in fright, before a spear falls from the sky to end their suffering. Cowed and cautious, the master thief and his partner slink in the shadows, their objective that of home... A new task, however, has fallen on Dia. With a trusty helper at her side, she has to set off towards Nachtville itself, to solve the mystery Claud had abandoned. Faced with an enemy whose sole skillset is geared towards killing, how will they succeed? And what dark secrets will they find? Book 4: In the Dark of the Moons Synopsis: The year has ended. The four months of the full moons will soon be followed by two months of the new moons. Duke Istrel's ascension is around the corner. Amidst this political upheaval, Count Nightfall, Licencia's strongest defender, has been called away. The Moon Lords' largest task yet — to protect Licencia in the absence of its ruler — has begun. And yet, trouble is unrelenting. A distinguished personage, one that Claud fears, has been found dead in the county, his brains dug out and his body disemboweled. The inquisitors of the White Church have been dispatched to investigate and apprehend the murderer...as well as the person behind this puppet. Tormented by a call to fight, Claud directs his eyes out of the city, looking for the puppetmaster. Skulking in the shadows, the master thief will soon confront his greatest foe yet. A foe just like him. Book 5: Moonlit Tides and Darkened Seas Synopsis: A new era has begun. For the privileged, the sands of time dribble away for every passing moment, counting down to the arrival of a entity of mythical proportions. The night now harbours shadows and fog, and operatives of the Moons and the Dark clash in shadow. Claud, as usual, is investigating a spate of nasty disappearances in the city, but little does he know what these disappearances truly mean. And yet, a tide is coming. When it finally breaks, what will he do? Book 6: Secrets in Shadow Synopsis: The person behind a strike that would enter the annals of history flees his home, bringing with him the person closest to his heart into a new land and into a new world. Having left Istrel for the first time in his life, the two of them attempt to settle down in foreign lands, only to be caught in the middle of hostilities between two mighty powers grappling for dominion. Yet, none of that has anything to do with him. Following his desires, Claud eventually makes his way to the fabled Celestia Ruins, a fragment of another world. Bearing witness to truths he cannot yet comprehend, he returns from his exploration, a small break away from the machinations of destiny. One thing, however, is for certain. Destiny will not wait for him. Book 7: Reddest Rage Synopsis: Destiny churns on, heedless of mortal machinations, and Claud watches as the battlegrounds between the Moons and the Dark are drawn up. With the forces of the great Dark occupying Lostfon, Claud comes to a startling realisation — that he may have very well be a murderer of heinous proportions. Grappling with that realisation, he struggles to prepare for his Second Tutorial... Back in Istrel, Dia finds herself confronted with a perennial truth. Even in a time of writhing destiny, the machinations between nobles never cease to end — and unfortunately for her, the group once known as the Moon Lords are forced into dealing with a petty squabble between two counts. What they didn't account for, however, was the startling discovery they would soon make... And the shadow of the Red God's Holy Son behind it all. Book 8: Darkness Descends Synopsis: Nightmares haunt the horizon as Claud sinks and awakens from a seeming dream. What was once illusory begins to play out before him, in a way he cannot imagine. Dia, forced to wield arms, begins and ends a battle that opens her eyes to the vast dangers that lurk in this sundered world. Under the banner of humanity and divinity, she beholds the silent, forgotten protectors of Orb...but there is no forgetting the battle between the divinities. The Dark descends, the Moons writhe, and the horns of war blow once more. But this is not their battle. Not yet. Book 9: Moons Muster Synopsis: As more and more events fall into place, Claud finds himself desperate. Not for himself, but for the person who has turned into his world. Armed with the knowledge of a certain future, he approaches the only person that could possibly help him in his time of need, trading information for a promise of help. With that as solace, he returns to the grim task of understanding and seeking, revisiting an ancient, shattered fragment of another world...unleashing changes that he never knew was possible. Back in Istrel, Dia and the others must now navigate around a familiar spirit, who seeks to investigate the death of his master's Bearer. With them as prime suspects, the Seekers of Life must move carefully...but the Coloured Gods are not the only divinities eyeing them closely. The Moons, bristling from repeated defeats, are looking for new recruits, and the Seekers of Life are prime cannon fodder. Above all, destiny marches on, the unfeeling clock a warning to all. The Trial of Aeons will soon arrive. Book 10: Destiny Divine Synopsis: ??? Release frequency: one every few days or something, I guess. (This work is also being serialised on Webnovel under the name Revile as a trial run)
