Chapter 8. The singer of psalms

Winston could hear Finn calling out to him, but he couldn't answer.

He fell forward onto his face and lay there unable to move.

He heard Finn approaching and saw his boots come to a stop

beside him. He felt Finn roll him over, clear the mud from his mouth

and check for other wounds.

He wanted to say to Finn that he was sorry, but he couldn't.

He felt Finns' hands on his face and then the pressure of his hands

on his chest.

Winston wanted to tell Finn to leave him behind, to not waste

any more time on him. He had no more time left - his life

was draining away.

In the stillness he heard a womans' voice.

"Might I have a quiet word with you, Winston."

Her words were a burst of sunlight in darkening skies.

Warmth spread across his chest and over his face.

He felt it seep through his entire body.

Winston took a deep breath, then another, and for the first

time in his life, he was aware of his heart beating and blood

flowing through every part of his body. He flushed with a

feeling of well being.

Opening his eyes he saw a woman leaning over him.

"Am I dead?" Winston asked.

"No, not today." the woman said. She smiled.

"My name Eurides, and I have a favour to ask of you Winston."
