The Sovereign
Through the eyes of the diamond salamanders that I had gifted to Magnus, I saw everything. He performed better than I had expected, especially given who he was facing.
I was aware that I was not the only Sovereign on this world, but I had hoped that I would have more time before the others started to send their agents after me.
I had assumed the researcher was nothing more than a scout, but she had come close to wiping out all of the Obsidian Outlaws. If not for the crystal gunslinger I would have needed to dispatch one of my enforcers to deal with her.
Kate may have been the first, but she wouldn’t be the last. The Sovereign of fire would soon send more of her agents into the Scorch and it wouldn’t be long until other Sovereigns followed her lead.
The current power struggles between the four nations bordering my domain were like children bickering in comparison to the war that was rapidly approaching. The Obsidian Outlaws would be undertaking many more tasks for me soon, both within and outside of the Scorch at times.
I had no delusions about my chances in a full on conflict with any of the other Sovereigns. Some of them had been amassing power and followers long before I was born after all.
But if I could buy enough time, then nobody would stand a chance against me. I wouldn’t let them get anywhere near the center of the Scorch, where the enormous crystalline moon that had granted me my power had first arrived.
Since that day, the orb had been slowly but surely growing in size. On occasion it talked to me and showed me more visions.
All I had to do was keep it safe and give it time. The being inside was growing more powerful with every passing day, and when it became time to unleash it on the world none would be able to stand in its path.
The domain of crystal would be born and starsand would cover the world.

With the corporate vultures circling around what they see as a new piece of company software, Jason finds himself in one of the simulations he used to design.
