《The Ruels of My Heart》chapter thirty; epilogue - your perspective

"You told her?" I ask.
"Yes. And she's breaking up with him," Ruel replies.
I am so relieved, I cannot describe it.
"But Leo..." Ruel continues, "What he did to you is very wrong, you know. Illegal."
I don't say anything.
"I think we have to take him to court."
"No!" I say, "It's fine."
"We have to."
"Why?"
"Because otherwise he will be able to hurt other people and keep being able to get away with it. Imagine if he hurt Coco too! He didn't, luckily, I asked her. But imagine!"
"Oh," I say, and I slowly realise he's right. I can't be selfish. As much as I hate to talk about it, hate to let people know about what happened, I know it's not a bad idea to take him to court. Not just for me. For other people. People like Coco.
One month later...
We won the case. Carson is in prison, for a very long time. The past month has been a bit of a blur. I just can't believe he's truly gone. I will no longer always be worrying about him, always having what he did at the back of my head. My mum was so sorry. She told me she will never forgive herself for not noticing. But I get it. She was grieving dad. And I suppose I was too. Maybe that's why I didn't really realise how bad things got.
Twelve years later...
I wake up, nice and early as always, and head downstairs. I start making breakfast, a big one, because it's a big day. I make some pancake batter, but don't cook it yet so that the pancakes will be nice and hot when they're eaten, and begin to slice some fresh fruit. Then I put some oranges in the juicer. This is a daily part of my routine, not only does it provide healthy vitamins and tastes delicious, but the juice blending part also serves as an alarm clock. Sure enough, within minutes, footsteps are coming downstairs.

"Morning sweeties," I say, scooping my two kids into my arms then helping them up onto the kitchen stools.
"Morning mum," they reply, in sync. They are twins, after all.
"Are you excited for today?" I ask.
"Yes!" They reply.
I give them their plates of fruit and pour them a glass of orange juice each, then I start cooking the pancakes. A few minutes later, the love of my life, my husband, comes down the stairs too.
"Good morning love," he says, planting a kiss on my cheek and giving me a quick hug from behind as I cook.
"Morning honey," I reply.
"Hey Cams, hey Zac," he says. Cameron and Zac. Our babies. We named our two kids in memory of two of the strongest people we ever knew.
We take the kids to school. It's their first day, ever. I cry a lot, but there's another thing on my mind. As we hop in the car to drive off, I don't go straight to work. I make a little stop. I park by a little beach, and take my husbands' hand and lead him out of the car.
"Where are we going?" he asks, though it's pretty obvious.
"The beach, silly," I reply, giggling.
A couple of minutes later, I stop walking, and so does he.
"Happy ten year wedding anniversary, my love," I say.
His face lights up, and then he says; "Thank you. I can't believe how fast ten years has gone. Here's to forever together. I love you, Leo."
I smile, so happy, "I love you too. Here's to forever, Ruel."
The end.
