Alizeh typed furiously on the keyboard. It was past lunch time and she hadn't done the report work yet. Her boss would kill her for sure. But what she could do? The conversation with her mother was echoing in her ears making it difficult for her to concentrate on anything. Her Amma was asking so desperately for anything for the very first time. Mehar had always been a understanding mother but her illness and some harsh experiences had made her demanding and always difficult to pacify. She was not in a very good health condition and on top she had a daughter to worry for. Alizeh could relate to her mother very well. As she was the sole reason for Mehar to act like this. Alizeh was cursing herself for not listening to Amma before. She should have asked for the divorce the same day she left Hussain residence. But her mind was set and she had made sure not to look back not even once. She had many complaints to her destiny and the person whom she thought was her everything. How easily he put all blame on her for the things she never did. Just one lie, a hidden truth and here she was. She had given her best to this relation but in return all she got was blames, Heart break and tears. She had made a promise to herself that she would never ever get married again nor she had anything to do with this marriage anymore. She won't even call him for a divorce as she didn't want to do anything with this relation or him. She had concentrated on her career. Starting everything a fresh in Sakardu wasn't easy but she did. She made a living for herself and her mother and never for once the thought of settling down again crossed her mind but with the arrival of Umair her life took a new turn. She found a friend in him but his eyes were giving her some other message. And her mother had read it before her. She was happy that her daughter found love in her life again. Love! As if it was there in her life before. She did love her husband but now she knew he didn't. He always took her for granted. He wasn't like this always. Some tragedies in life had made him ignorant to everything. To his wife as well. But how could she say all that to her mother. Her mother still thought she took a huge step just because of her love. Only she knew what the reason was.
But all this was useless now. To think about the past was useless. To think about a certain Shehryar Hussain was useless. She shook her head and concentrated back on the computer screen. Umair was in love with her and her mother was in love with this fact. She had wronged her mother enough. Not anymore. She would do her best to get this divorce from Shehryar Hussain.

Samia draped the shawl around herself and looked in the mirror. Change took a long time to take place but it did. She was changed now. She had made all the wrongs right in her life. That scumbag of a husband was out of it. She was no longer Mrs Imran and was living her life the way she wanted. But in all this one part of her heart always yearned to feel the motherly feeling she had become accustomed to even if for a short interval of time. Her baby. Who didn't get a chance to take even one breath in this world. Her tears threatened to escape her eyes but she just shook her head and went down in search of her mother whom she found sitting in the lounge while Farhat was standing close to her.
"Mom?"
Samia sat down near Rodaba who was deep in thoughts.
"hun?"
"Where are you lost? Did you have your breakfast?"
"No. I was waiting for you. Let's have it now."
"Mom? You okay there?"
"Samia I'm worried for Shehri. Today again he left to office without having his breakfast. Why he is so careless? And I know he is worried over something. I just know it."
Samia held her mother's hand . Her brother's life had been a question mark to all of them for past five years. He had made himself a workaholic and always busy with his meetings and stuff but they knew he was not the same. He had changed. Change. How strange this word was. For her it brought freedom from a meaningless marriage and for Shehryar it brought nothing but loneliness.
"You know taking care of such a vast empire isn't easy. He has to give his hundred percent. It's not the first time he left like this. Don't worry he'll have something from there. You come with me and have your breakfast okay?"
Rodaba nodded absentmindedly while Samia cursed their fate which brought them here. If only all that didn't happen. Thinking about the past a scared tear stricken face roamed in front of her eyes and she just shook her head.
Some times it good to just shun away from your past.

She left Mr Mukhtar's cabin with a heavy heart. That old man had again insulted her and rejected her request of a loan from the office. Her three day leave hadn't gone well with him and he had reminded her of the numerous leaves she had taken all these months. The time when her mother was in hospital. But he couldn't understand her plight. She hired a cab and reached her house.

She greeted her mother and faking a smile left to her room. She was feeling as if her nerves would burst. From where she would arrange all this money? Life was gain playing games with her. Why poor have no place in this world? She dropped herself on the bed and took a deep breath.
"Ya Allah help me please."
She prayed silently and putting a cheerful smile dashed out of the room to face her mother who was waiting for her on the dinner.

"Okay, Mom! I get it! I'll meet her, talk to her, and will try to make a good conversation. But one thing is for sure. If she isn't of my type then I'm sorry I'll just walk out! I don't have all my day to meet the girls you have selected for me."
Daim said irritatingly and smiled awkwardly at the nurse who was eyeing him questionably. Mothers. Their biggest worry was to marry their children off and his mother was no exception. She was telling him again and again about a certain Doctor Nemrah she met during her visit for regular Bp and diabetes check up and found that Doctor Nemrah adorable. And today she had forced him to go and see the girl himself. She had already talked to girl's mother who was in Sakardu.
" She is a gem Daim! Don't let her go. You'll be the luckiest if you get to marry her."
His mother and her habit of exaggerating things. He chuckled and cut the call.
"Can I meet Doctor Nemrah Nadeem please?"
He asked the nurse with his trademark smile and before she could reply a melodious laughter echoed in his ears. He turned to the left and entered a huge ward and seeing what's happening inside his lips curled into a smile.
A girl with her lab coat on and a birthday cap on her head was eating cake from a child's hand and was giggling and laughing along with kids. Her laughter was so soothing that he felt his heart got a sudden kind of happiness that was never there. She was laughing and singing with them. There was a sudden calmness and happiness in the picture she was making. There was a beauty in her that drew him in. She was a vision. Literally.
"Sir?"
The same nurse tapped on his shoulder. He turned around and looked at her.
"Dr Nemrah Nadeem. But I'm sorry she is a bit occupied and won't be able to meet you today. You can see that very well."
She pointed towards the scene ahead. He smiled and looking at Nemrah for the last time turned to the exit.
He was ready to know her more. He was ready to do what his mother was asking him.

"Good Job, Imad."
Shehryar placed the file in front of him staring at it intently. Imad nodded his head. He wouldn't be able to understand his boss ever. This man was a complication. The most skilled businessman yet the one no one could understand fully. Imad didn't know much about his boss and his past but he knew some bad experiences had made Shehryar what he was today. His boss had asked him for something and after three days he had finally gave him the last report. But the task wasn't a professional one. Not at all. And why his boss was doing something other than his business wasn't his work to ask. He glanced at him who was resting his head on the chair with his eyes closed. The indication that he was very much satisfied over something.
But what was it?

Alizeh glanced at Umair who was looking at Mr Mukhtar confusedly. He had summoned both of them in his office and asked for the project file they both were working day and night. Umair was more committed to his work than her and she knew if the boss had called them to give a news about their promotion or any new project than it should be Umair who would be getting this.
"I must say! Good work both of you."
Mr Mukhtar smiled at Umair and then eyed Alizeh curiously which alerted her. Why he was looking at her like that.
"Mr Umair! I have decided for the Karachi fashion week you'll be going to cover the event and taking care of our exhibition there."
She took a deep breath. Thank God it was Umair who got the new project because she certainly wasn't in a condition to leave her mother here.
"And Miss Yousaf..."
He turned to her.
"You were also good there. So I have decided something for you too."
She was surprised listening to what he was saying. Mr Mukhtar and this good with her? Was she dreaming?
"You Will be going to Lahore. We have merged our branch with a big fashion house and you'll be there as one of the members of our creative Team."
He finished and looked at a shocked Alizeh.

The Simulacrum
"He who fights with harem tropes should see to it that he himself does not become a harem protagonist. And if you gaze for long into a narrative, the narrative gazes also into you." --- Friedrich Nietzsche (probably?) How would you react if one day you woke up inside an environment running on tropes and clichés? For allegedly average high-schooler Leonard Dunning, this question became quite relevant when one day he woke up in a pristine city on a strange island in the middle of the Atlantic, without any memories, surrounded by classmates who are barely more than characterless placeholders, and with a classic indecisive harem protagonist and his impossibly beautiful love interests for friends. That would be hard to deal with already, yet his investigation into the tropes governing the world, trying to avoid harem shenanigans, and his odd blend of outside-context knowledge, unique abilities, and a penchant for causing trouble wherever he goes ends up dragging him into the center of the action anyway. Disclaimer: This is a tongue-in-cheek, slice of life romantic comedy, with occasional sprinkles of combat and mystery to spice things up. Please do not expect a straight up deconstruction beyond some in-universe meta-commentary by the characters.
