Welcome Week is your first experience at university after receiving an offer from your top choice of school, or many offers from other schools, and after deciding where to enrol.
Welcome week at university is a big deal. Especially, if you're transitioning straight from high school. You'll find university to be a whole different ball game. It will be the most stressful 3-4 years of your life. So every year, at university at the beginning of the first semester before classes start, there is a welcome week.
Having a good time at parties, meeting new people, getting your first hangover, and signing up for clubs, sports, and classes are all part of welcome week.
First-year students get the chance to meet new people and join new groups during welcome week at their university of choice. The idea is to make first-year students feel appreciated and welcomed by their more experienced classmates and lecturers.
This custom has been observed by several universities for many years. To ease the transition from high school to college for first-year students, this custom was established. Most first-year students will have to rely more on themselves for the first time during their time at university. That can be very scary for some students. This is the reason why welcome week exists. So, you don't have to experience the daunting years at university to come, alone.
