Overwhelmed by the commotion that was going on around them, Penelope hadn't even noticed that Tina Goldstein had left her and Newt's side. Newt hadn't seemed to notice, either, until the ex-Auror was approaching Percival Graves a couple of blocks down.
"Merlin's beard," Newt muttered as he grabbed Penelope's hand, pulling her alongside him as he struggled to get closer to Tina whilst still being hidden.
"Percival Graves!" Penelope heard Tina yell towards the dark man who was trying to talk to the Obscurus. Graves immediately turned around at the sound of her voice, his wand in his hand, and shot a stunning spell towards the woman; though Tina easily blocked it, and Penelope could tell that she was very skilled in dueling.
Percival Graves turned his full attention away from the Obscurial and onto Tina instead, slowly walking towards her with his wand pointed at her. Tina looked panicked as she backed away from the dark man, shooting spells his way, those of which Graves blocked rather easily.
Penelope turned to Newt as if asking him if she could help Goldstein, though the man's attention wasn't even on the dueling woman. Instead, he was focused on the dark Obscurus as it descended deeper into the city. Newt suddenly grabbed Penelope's hand, Apparating away from the street that was now only occupied by two dueling wizards.
Penelope wished that she could've stayed behind and helped Tina, as she had formed a sort of liking towards the witch, despite the jealously she felt towards her whenever Newt showed the woman affection.
The next thing she knew, she and Newt were standing on yet another rooftop, only feet away from the rampaging Obscurial. Newt slowly let go of Penelope's hand, raising his hands in surrender as he took a step towards the dark mass.
"Credence," he said slowly, his voice barely heard over the commotion of the Obscurial. "Credence, I'm here to help you."
The Obscurial didn't seem to like this however, as if suddenly shot itself towards Newt, surrounding the British man in its black mass within seconds. It then flew away from the rooftop, leaving Penelope untouched, leaving an empty space where Newt once was.
"Newt!" The young woman screamed, feeling her heart sink to her feet at the thought of Newt getting devoured by the creature so easily. She buried her face into her hands, feeling tears beginning to form in her eyes. She jumped as she felt an arm slide around her waist, and looked up to see Newt standing beside her once more.
"Merlin's beard," he muttered without looking at her, watching the Obscurus fly through the city once more. "That is one angry child."
As the Obscurus flew past the pair once more, Newt took off running after it, surprisingly keeping up with it. Penelope ran after them, struggling to match Newt's quick pace. Bright blue and orange light flashed within the dark mass of the Obscurial, blinding Penelope whenever she looked at it. She then noticed that she and Newt were nearing the end of the long building- they would have to end their pursuit in a moment. Though Newt didn't slow down; in fact, he sped up as he neared the edge of the building. Penelope grabbed onto him as he jumped from the building, Apparating once more alongside him.

The pair reappeared underground, in the long, stone tunnels of a subway. Newt held a finger to his lips as he led Penelope down a flight of stairs. He stopped at the bottom, gently pushing Penelope against the wall. His hand remained on her stomach as he slowly peaked around the corner, letting out a shaky breath as he stared at the sight before him.
The Obscurial was surprisingly calm, seeping down from the ceiling like some type of thick, black liquid.
Newt suddenly turned to Penelope, staring at the woman with wide eyes. "I need you to transform, Penny," he said quietly, careful not to disturb the deadly beast near them.
"What?" Penelope hissed through clench teeth; she couldn't believe what she was hearing. She had only just learned about her ability hours before, how could he expect her to be able to control it?
"I know what you're thinking, but you're going to have to try," Newt murmured as if he were reading her mind. He stepped in front of her when she wouldn't look at him, cupping her cheek and gently raising her head to look him in the eyes. "You said I'm your trigger, correct? Well, I'm in danger, Penny- and you know that very well. I need you to do this."
Penelope nodded slowly, swallowing thickly as she closed her eyes. She tried to imagine how she had felt when she had thought the Obscurus had killed Newt; angry, afraid, lost. She thought of him in danger, of him needing her to protect him. She then felt herself becoming stronger, and she slowly had to lean down on all fours. She looked down at her feet, which were now covered in thick black fur, then back up at Newt.
The British man was smiling down at her in admiration. He reached down and ran his hand across his head slowly. "You're a fascinating woman, Penny. I hope you know that."
Without another word, Newt stepped out from behind the corner and out of Penelope's sight. She crouched low to the floor and glanced out from around the corner, making sure to get the blonde man in her sight at all times. Newt approached the Obscurus slowly, his eyes never leaving the dark mass.
"Credence," he murmured, his voice echoing the long and quiet subway tunnel. The Obscurial didn't seem to take notice of him as it continued to flow across the ceiling. "It is Credence, isn't it? I'm here to help you, Credence. I'm not here to hurt you." Newt let out a sigh as the creature ignored him, and he slowly took another step towards it. It was now flowing down the wall across the train tracks, sticking to it like some sort of giant slime.
Newt continued to approach the Obscurial, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. "I've met someone like you before, Credence. A girl- a young girl who had been imprisoned. She was locked away and was being punished for her magic."

The Obscurial was now on the ground across the tracks; it slowly began to clump together, evaporating into the air and leaving Credence Barebone in its place. The boy had his knees pulled to his chest, and he was shaking violently. Penelope crept forward to get closer to Newt as the British man crouched in front of Credence.
"Credence," he said to the boy, though Credence only stared at him with dark, angry eyes. "Can I come over to you?" When Credence didn't answer him, Newt slowly stood to his feet and took a step towards the boy. Though as soon as his foot hit the tracks, Credence jumped up, disappearing into a cloud of black mist once more.
With a flash of bright light, Newt was knocked to his feet and thrown across the tracks. He groaned in pain as he lay on the metal tracks, and this caused Penelope to leap forward. She landed beside him, her two front paws in between his legs as she bared her teeth at the black mass before her. Though something moved within the shadows- something that wasn't the Obscurial. Percival Graves revealed himself, his wand pointed at the pair as he stalked towards them. He murmured something that Penelope couldn't make out, and another flash of light shot towards them, only just missing Penelope.
"Penny, no," Newt groaned, attempting to push her to safety, though Penelope refused to budge. She growled at the dark man approaching them, only moving once Newt had risen to his feet and was running away. She took off after the man, keeping pace with him as he struggled to run. Graves shot yet another spell, this one hitting Newt's feet and causing him to tumble to the ground once more. Penelope grabbed him by the collar and dragged him away from the tracks and behind a pole, out of Graves' sight.
Newt looked at Penelope for a moment, his blue eyes intense, before reaching around the pillar and muttering "stupefy". Percival Graves easily blocked the spell, continuing to make his way towards the pair slowly, dangerously.
Penelope suddenly felt herself being lifted into the air, and no matter how hard she tried to stay by Newt's side, she was dragged away from the British boy. She was then slammed into the hard metal tracks, causing a wave of pure agony to wash over her entire body. She lay there, stunned, as Graves approached her.
The dark man crouched beside her, staring at her through narrowed eyes. "What is this, Scamander?" He asked as he kicked Penelope harshly. "Another one of your precious beasts?"
"You get away from her!" Newt yelled, suddenly standing up from around the corner, shooting a spell at Graves. This time, the man had no time to block it, and was knocked away from Penelope.
He got up within seconds, however, and yelled out a bone-chilling "crucio" that sent Newt crumbling to the ground in an fit of spasms. He casted the same spell over and over again, Newt's agonizing screams echoing through the empty tunnels. Penelope leaped to her feet at the sound, jumping in between Newt and Graves just as another spell was cast. Immediately, Penelope felt as if a thousand red-hot knives were being stabbed into her body and twisted, and with a howl of pain, she fell to the ground in a spastic mess.
Suddenly, the immense pain stopped as the Obscurus made an appearance once more. Graves stared it with wide eyes as it approached him, backing away from her and Newt slowly.
"Credence, don't do this," he whispered to the dark force, backing away from it. Then, the Obscurial attacked, just barely missing Graves as he Apparated out of sight. It then turned to Newt, who was now standing over Penelope and stroking her in attempt to comfort her. Newt Apparated them away from the beast just before it attacked, and they appeared in another part of the subway system.
Penelope was no longer in her Animagus form, as the torture had weakened her immensely. She lay on the ground, shaking uncontrollably as Newt sat beside her and began stroking her hair.
"It's okay, Penny," he murmured; she could tell that he was shaking, as well, obviously still feeling the effects of Graves' torture curse. There was commotion going on around them as the Obscurial tried to attack Graves; though the dark wizard was just too fast for it, Apparating before it had a chance to attack him.
The Obscurial suddenly increased in size, filling the entire ceiling of the subway system with its black mass. A loud, eerie groan came from the creature, echoing off the walls. It seemed like it was about to attack, and Penelope closed her eyes, accepting her fate and preparing herself for the immense pain.
"Credence, no!" A familiar voice stopped the beast from attacking, and a sudden silence fell over the subway. Penelope lifted her head to see Tina Goldstein standing not too far away, staring up at the Obscurial with pleading eyes. "Don't do this."

Is their destiny set in stone, or will they forge a different path? No matter what, their choices will bring forth a new era for Mendala. ------------------------------ If you love vast fantasy worlds, rich, fleshed-out characters, and a adventure where your'e constantly discovering new things along the way, then this is definitely a story you'll enjoy. This is a slow-burn high fantasy / adventure with many characters and intersecting plotlines. It’s a quest so lots of adventuring, exploring, and character moments, but not a ton of fighting/action (though there are definitely some great fight scenes as payoff to the buildup). Because it’s a fantasy world with lots of people and new concepts, I try to make it easy so that you don’t have to memorize anything. The narrative will constantly remind you of important people/places/concepts as you keep moving forward. Some things won’t be fully explained right at the beginning to avoid information overload. My goal is that the reader will learn things organically as the story progresses. I use two mechanisms to help with the intersecting plotlines. - Each chapter is named for the (main) plotline it’s following and which part. - At the beginning of the chapter, and anytime there is a scene shift, the location is listed. Also, though this is definitely a portal-fantasy (isekai) it’s different from the standard isekai, especially since the world transfer doesn’t happen immediately. It’s not Lit-RPG but characters gain powers and grow over time. Also, it’s a group of teens that transfer, not just one central character. All of the teens are distinct characters, with their own character-arcs, relationships, powers, growth etc. Hopefully you’ll find this interesting as you’ll see the world and story from multiple perspectives. The story is always in 3rd Person (Omniscient) POV so that it’s not jarring as perspectives shift.

Does Hell Have an Adventurers' Guild?
I have decided to try out a different style. I cannot say much at this point, the story is mostly fantasy/romance and will evolve as I go, but it will involve an "adventurers' guild" in a demonic setting. MC will be a reincarnator becoming a denizen of hell, I will add vital description as I go. Gore will be used with reason, some bad words here and there and severe explicit or traumatizing content will be announced in advance, but it will not be the focus of the work.
