I heard a glass shatter on the wall in the apartment above mine
At first I thought that I was dreamin'
But then I heard the voice of a girl (boy)
And it sounded like she'd (he'd) been cryin'
Now I'm too worried to be sleepin'
I was just hanging out with Bokuto, and Akaashi at my apartment, playing smash bros' when I suddenly heard glass shatter in the apartment upstairs.
"What the hell?"
"What?" Bokuto asked, confused, as he paused the game.
"I could've sworn I heard glass shatter upstairs just now," I explained.
"Maybe someone dropped a mug on the floor, Konoha-san," Akaashi spoke up.
"Yeah. Or maybe I'm going insane, but I kind of doubt it. Let's just continue."
Bokuto unpaused the game, and we played until the sun was down.
"It's pretty late. Do you wanna stay over?" I asked the two.
"I wouldn't mind," Akaashi stated.
"Let's sleep together, Agaaaaaashi!" Bokuto yelled.
"Not so loud, Bokuto-san. The neighbors will complain."
"Oh my god, you two sound so wrong right now," I whined as I covered my eyes. BokuAka flushed red in realization, and awkwardly mumbled incoherent things as they walked away from each other slowly.
That night Bokuto, and Akaashi slept like babies, while I couldn't sleep at all. The whole night I heard a boy crying, and I was getting concerned. I theorized, and theorize, and the only theory I could come up with was that someone abuses the people on the floor above.
So I took the elevator to the second floor
Walked down the hall and then I knocked upon her (his) door
She (he) opened up and I asked about the things I've been hearing
It was midnight, and I was getting way too worried to sleep. So, I went to the second floor using an elevator, and walked down the hall, and found his door. I knocked on the door. A guy who looked to be around my age (17-18) with messy (h/c) hair opened the door. He had dark bags under his eyes, and he might've been crying too.
"Yes, can I help you?" He asked tiredly.
"Actually, can I ask you something?"
The guy looked a bit concerned, but nodded hesitantly anyway. Probably to avoid suspicion.
"Well, I'm Konoha Akinori, by the way. I'm your downstairs neighbor, and I've been hearing glass shattering, crashes, and crying, may I ask you what that's all about? Like is everything OK up here?" I asked.
She (he) said, "I think your ears are playing tricks on you"
Sweater zipped up to her (his) chin
"Thanks for caring, sir, that's nice of you
But I have to go back in
Wish I could tell you about the noise

But I didn't hear a thing"
She (he) said, "It must have been the wind, must have been the wind

The guy looked in the apartment, then back at me.
"I think your ears are playing tricks on you," he said. It was just now that I noticed that his sweater was zipped up all the way up to his chin. If something's already wrong, this definitely made it more suspicious if they didn't want people to know.
"Thank you for caring, though," he thanked me. Suddenly I heard a man's voice shouted from inside the apartment.
"(Y/n), get your retarded ass back in here!"
I was shocked when the boy whom I just learned was called (Y/n) yelled back to him, "Sorry, dad."
"I'm sorry, I have to go back in. I wish I could tell you about the noises you've been hearing, but I was listening to music, and I wasn't actually around today. Sorry, but it must have been the wind, otherwise I'd hear it, since I live here." (Y/n) chuckled, but it sounded fake, and pained. "But if you still are wondering, go to the rooftop at 3 am sharp tomorrow. I'll see you, Konoha."
He then closed the door back up lightly. I was confused beyond words, and went back to my apartment. I wrote on a sticky note on my fridge, then went back to sleep.
The next day, Akaashi, and Bokuto went back to their respective homes. I decided to investigate a little, and asked the key holder.
"Hey, Makoto-san. Could you tell me a bit about the apartment above mine?" I asked Makoto, or the key holder.
"Oh you mean the (L/n)'s. There's actually many complaints about them. The (L/n)'s don't really come out of their home, except for food. (Y/n) is usually nowhere to be seen most of the time, actually." Makoto thought out loud.
"I see. Is there anything about the father perhaps... abusing (Y/n)?" I asked.
"None that I know of," he stated.
"I see. Well, good evening, Makoto-san."
So I was layin' on the floor of my room
Cold concrete on my back
No, I just couldn't shake the feeling
I didn't want to intrude 'cause I knew that I didn't have all the facts
But I couldn't bear the thought of leavin' her (him)
So I was just laying on the concrete floor in my apartment. Despite Makoto-san saying that there were no abuse cases or records concerning the (L/n)'s that he knows about, something felt very off. I can just feel that something was odd with the way the (L/n)'s were acting, and talking. But at the same time, I can't really do anything about it, as there wasn't enough evidence, and I don't want to intrude. What if (Y/n) or his father just tripped while walking with a cup, and accidentally shattered it? What if they were just watching a sad movie, and (Y/n) cried? What if calling his own son a retard was just the anger talking? What if (Y/n) was just cold, and wore a sweater so he'll be warmer? I'd look awful, and would never be able to face the (L/n)'s again... but something is very much not right here, I can feel it.

I arrived at the rooftop at 3 am sharp, per (Y/n)'s request. There he was, in all his glory. Messy (h/c) hair, tired (e/c) eyes with darker bags underneath them.
"Hello," (Y/n) greeted.
"Hey."
"I see you got curious. Well, I honestly can't say much, or I'm dead, so, I'll just say, it wasn't the wind." He said as he walked back.
"Wait!" I exclaimed.
"Hm?"
"Can I have your number?" I asked, blushing at how weird it sounded.
"Sure, it's (number)."
I got out my phone and typed a 'hi' to the number. (Y/n) got out his phone, and smiled. I then got a 'hey' back.
"Well, I'll see you, Konoha," (Y/n) said as he walked away.
For several months, I've been chatting, hanging out, and video calling with (Y/n). I learned that he goes to Nekoma, and he's an insomniac, hence the dark eye bags he has. He's never addressed his dad treating him like shit when we were on video call when I asked him about it. He usually just says "He's not in a good mood" or "Eh, nothing much, just a bad day at work." The usual excuses. I just played along, and said "Oh, OK." Or anything that would infer that I believe him. Other than that he's actually a very fun person to hang out with (except that one time where he fell asleep when he was driving us to get brunch). I may or may not even have feelings for him, but I prioritize his safety rather than tell him I like him, and get his father angry for him being friends with me or something. Speaking of the devil, I heard crashing, and thumping on the second floor. I was a bit concerned, and suddenly I got a call from (Y/n).
"Hello?"
"You useless little brat! All you do is leach from me, you only know how to do that!" (Y/n)'s father shouted as I heard punching.
"Holy shit," I mumbled. I hung up the call, and immediately called 110.
"Hello, what's your emergency?" The operator asked.
"Hi, I think my upstairs neighbor is getting physically abused. Can you please come quickly, the thumping sounds are getting more intense."
"I'll send the cops on the way."
Aim my boom box at the roof, I'm playing "Lean on Me"
Just so that she knows that she (he) can lean on me
And when she (he) hears the words, I hope she (he) knows she'll (he'll) be OK

OK, the police are on their way, and I need (Y/n) to know that he'll be safe. What should I do?

"What do you do when you feel down?" I asked.
"I listen to music. Usually I listen to "Lean on Me". How about you, what do you do?"
"Eh, just play volleyball."
"Cool."
...
That's it! I'll just play 'Lean on Me'. I aimed my boom box at the area with a lot of thumping, and started playing the song. Maybe he'll get the message that he can lean on me, and he'll be OK.
We can talk about the noise, when you're ready, but 'til then

The police came, and arrested (Y/n)'s dad.
"Are you OK, (Y/n)?" I asked. Currently we were in the hospital for a check up.
"Yeah..." he answered.
"So, it wasn't the wind, right?"
"Yeah, it wasn't." (Y/n) replied. "You played Lean on Me from your apartment, right?"
"You heard that?"
"Yeah. Thanks for that."
"... No problem, I love you." I confessed.
"... I love you too." (Y/n) replied, blushing furiously. "And I hope that wasn't the wind blowing in my ear."
"It wasn't."
