Chapter 7. The coalface

Finns ears were ringing from the sound of the constant

artillery exchanges and nearby explosions.

He lent over the unconscious officer to shelter him from the

rain of mud and dirt that was falling around them.

"I have no idea where were the fuck we are." Syd said.

Finn looked around. "Our luck is going to run out if we stay

out here for much longer."

Syd pointed behind them. "We'll have to go back

through that trench line."

Finn grimaced. It would give them cover, but taking a

a loaded stretcher through and around the purposely

dug corners of the trench was going to be difficult.

Finn and Syd stepped and slid down a large shell crater

into it the trench carrying the unconscious officer between them.

"How big was the explosion that made this?" Finn said.

"I'm not waiting around to find out. " Syd said.
