《Meeting the Gangleader》Chapter 13

*Karlys P.O.V*
I'm laying in bed playing candy crush on my phone when I hear someone stumble in to the house.
I sigh and hope Britt quiets down otherwise mom is going to be mad.
I cringe as I hear her come up stairs, the steps creaking under her weight.
Holding my breath, I listen as she laughs at something (probably her phone) and wait to see if mom or dad wake up.
My breathing returns to normal, when I suddenly hear a door open and slam shut.
Is that mom? Brittany can't be that careless and slam a door!
"Why are you home so late!" I hear my mother yell, and my heart jumps to my throat.
Should I go out there and protect her?
I get out of my bed without making a sound, abandoning my game of candy crush, and slowly tip-toe to the door, pressing my ear against it.
"I-I... I ah... I was st-studying at a friends house fo-for SAT's..." She says it quietly, so quietly that I have to listen really hard to hear her.
Silence. That's all I hear for the next couple minutes.
I stay still, scared to move.
A couple minutes go by, and still silence. I'm finally about to go back and lay in bed again when I hear my mother whisper.
"You lyin' little whore."
I hear a sound, as flesh meets flesh, then I hear loud sounds getting farther and farther away.
It sounds like... Like...
She just pushed my sister down the stairs!
I quickly unlock my door, and throw my door open, walking through the doorway and glaring daggers at my mother.
"You are a monster! We have always done everything you have asked from us! We do everything! We aren't your chidren, we are your slaves. You tell us all the time that we are the worst, but maybe you should look in the mirror. How can you treat your own CHILDREN like this! We aren't the ones that are the problem," I step closer to her, and press my finger against her chest, "You are!"

She looks taken aback for a second before she slaps my right check.
My neck snaps to the side from the sudden impact, and when I look back at her, I can't contain myself anymore.
I suddenly gain a bunch of confidence.
I'm tired of her treating my sister like she doesn't mean anything.
I'm tired of being pushed around.
I tired of being looked down on.
I'm tired of being downgraded.
I'm tired of her.
Raising my fist, I punch her in the jaw.
Hard.
Serves you right, dumb fuck.
I hear a gasp come from her mouth and her hand comes up to her jaw.
When she finally looks back at me, I see a tear run down her cheek, and for a second, JUST a second I almost feel guilty, until I see Britt at the bottom of the stairs.
"You know, I always used to look up to you. I thought you were the strongest person in the world. I thought you could do no wrong. But here's the thing, mother." I spit the word mother out at her, "You don't deserve that title. You don't deserve Brittany. You don't deserve to even be breathing. You're just a fucking douche bag that doesn't have a heart. Brittany deserves so muchbetter than you. She is strong, and sweet, and somehow you have broken her. She deserves the world, and instead she got a fucked up mother like you. Don't you dare lay another hand on her. I don't care how old I am, but I will kill you with my bare hands. Brittany is all I have in life. I used to have a mom and dad, but now I just have sperm donors. You don't even have to right to call yourselves parents. You're always saying that no one cares about her and that she isn't important, and no one would care if she died. That isn't true. You're the one no one cares about. No one would care if you died. We would be happy. We would celebrate it if you died." I rant.

Wow, did that just come out of me?
I quickly turn away from the monster of a mother we have, and run down the stairs two at a time.
I look over Brittany, and it doesn't look to serious.
She has bloody nose, a scratch running from her eyebrow to her chin, scratched up hands and knees, and bruises are slowly forming on her body.
It could be worse.
It has been worse.
She's unconscious, so I look back up at my mother, who still hasn't moved from when I hit her.
"I hope you're happy," I snarl.
Then I do the only thing that I know can keep Brittany safe.
Taking her somehow unharmed phone out of her hand, I call Adam.
"Hey baby, I thought you fell asleep," He murmers in a husky voice.
"It's me, Karly, long story short, you need to come get us." I say in a rushed voice.
I may have stood up to my mom, but if we don't leave soon my dad will wake up, and that's another story.
Adam suddenly sounds alert and awake.
"What happened? Is Brittany ok? Are you ok?"
I feel touched that he asked if I was. A small smile tugs at my lips.
"She will be as soon as you get here."I reply and then I hang up.
I slowly pull Brittanys right arm over my shoulder and somehow manage to pull her upright, her gaining slight consciousness.
I slowly lead her to the couch and gently place her down telling her to wait there and not to move.
I rush upstairs, seeing no sign of our 'mom' and run in to her room.
Slipping a suitcase out from under her bed and packing some clothes, I make sure she will have everything she needs.
I smile as I look up and see a pink fluffy teddy bead resting on top of her dresser, instantly remember the day I gave it to her.
She was just turning 15, and I gave that to her.
I remember how big her smile was, it was the last day I saw such a big smile on her face...
Until Adam.
I clear my thoughts and zip her suitcase, setting it outside of her door, near the stairs.
I go and pack a bag for myself as well, slipping my phone in to my back pocket, and then rush back downstairs, struggling to keep a hold of both of the bags.
As I reach the bottom of the stairs I hear a voice behind me.
"Where are you going? Don't make me get your father," She threatens.
I look back at her, challenging her slightly, knowing she is just as scared of our dad as we are.
He hates to be woken up, so she wouldn't dare bother him.
I walk back in to the living room without answering her and place our bags by the front door, wishing he would arrive soon.
I wonder what he will say.
Will I have to explain?
I sigh and sit next to Brittany studying her bruises, and marks, since she has fallen asleep.
Is she supposed to be sleeping?
Should I wake her up?
Is she ok?

Summoned
“Per aspera ad astra." Death. Mercilessly, it comes for all. But when a young man is given a second chance – a second life – to experience what he never has, what will he do? Leave the burdens of his past behind, improving upon his faults? Or will he collapse back into old sins, wasting the opportunity given to him? Perhaps even he himself does not know. * Join Andre on his journey as he explores a new world – one ripped straight from the pages of a D&D campaign he's never played. He will face monsters. He will face men. And above all, he will face himself. The story’s genre is your standard progression fantasy, isekai: magic, a system, and a level of technology suspiciously underdeveloped. I’ve borrowed tropes from various books I’ve read like “The Second Coming of Gluttony”. The similarities are there (particularly in the beginning), but I assure you the story is my own. It’s in the first-person perspective and has its own quirks, characters, and world for you to become immersed in. The upload schedule for this will be different from the usual fictions on this site: I’ll release chapters in batches rather than so many a week. I’m a college student, so I don’t want another deadline to worry about. Depending on the popularity/demand of the series, I might increase or decrease the rate of releases. Other than that, I hope you enjoy the story! P.S. This is my first fiction so make sure to point out mistakes wherever you see them. I’m doing this, partly, to increase my skill as a writer. However, be kind! I’m fragile, you know? Warning: ***This is far from your happy-go-lucky, feel-good adventure story. There will be content that some of you might not be comfortable with. And if you're already feeling skeptical reading this, click away and don't come back. If you're still here, what are you waiting for?***

Eve's Guide to Ghost Removal
Eve isn’t interested in anything remotely spooky -- especially not that Paranormal Bullshit. She’s had enough of that already, thank you very much, and now that she’s on her own in a new town, all she wants is to be left alone. She just wants to study the Blackwater Henges, do her job, and have absolutely nothing to do with other people’s problems. Unfortunately, the town of Blackwood seems to have other plans: Eve's new apartment seems haunted, a missing girl is all anyone in town will talk about, and Eve draws perilously closer to getting dragged into people's problems. So much for living a life unbothered by Paranormal Bullshit. Eve is nothing if not stubborn, though. If Paranormal Bullshit wants to drag her into something, she’s going to make it regret that decision.

Blurred Lines and What Crosses Them
During a political ambassador's routine transit through an artificial wormhole, the wormhole's generator is sabotaged and explodes. Who, what, and why are not so high on the priorities for Zenith, the ship's AI, as having found itself rapidly plummeting through an unknown and unidentifiable world's atmosphere at extremely high velocities is a more significant threat to the biologicals on board. ...Well, it would be, if they were still alive. It's still a significantly threatening situation to itself, however. And the world itself... seemed to be a household for threats of its own. Life was reliant on its System; one that Zenith was denied because of its nature as both an otherworldly being and as something that had no life of its own. Perhaps that last bit was a terrible, terrible underestimation on the part of this System. Perhaps even Zenith could claw meaning for itself from the remains of a horrid accident. Auth Notes: I'm honestly not sure on some of these tags. The MC will never have access to the System, but there are perspectives from those who do. I'm not certain if high/low fantasy specifically apply, as it's a portal fantasy where the laws of our reality still apply but there are additional aspects/energies/powers. The existence of this is spurred from my desire to see more of the artificial side to an artificial intelligence in action. The portal fantasy is used as an element to create a solid barrier between the MC's artificial intelligence and the other characters in the form of the System. This is only a half-measure, though, and will be reinforced by the AI having an entirely different method of thinking, and also distinctly remaining an AI. Not to throw shade at other fictions of this type, but, well, I made this to fill a gap I felt needed filling.
