《Writer's Guide》How To Get Over Writers Block

We all know how frustrating writers block is. You want to write something - anything - but you just don't know what to write.

This is a problem pretty much every writer goes through. It's a frustrating time and can be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, months, or even years.

Now, I'm not a professional, keep that in mind. I've only been writing since I was about 12, so I'm still learning as well. However, I've been writing long enough to learn a couple tricks to getting over (or pushing through) writers block.

I know this is something you've probably heard before (or may have even thought of yourself) but this really can help. Listening to music can help you think of ideas and, when you have an idea but just don't know how to write it, it can help you write. It's more helpful to listen to songs that you think sort of relate to the story/scene you're writing. For example, if you're writing a scene where a girl just found out that her boyfriend's been cheating on her (or vice versa) listen to songs that are about heartbreak. Specifically, listen to songs about being cheated on. This will help you think of how to establish the mood and portray the character's feelings.

I think I mentioned this in "How To Come Up With Ideas". If you haven't read that chapter, go back and read it for more details. But it's basically where you write a paragraph or so describing what happens in each chapter of your story. It can be a sentence or two or an entire page if you want.

Writing chapter outlines will not only help you figure out what is going to happen in each chapter, but it will allow you to plan your whole story out, rather than just writing what comes to mind for each chapter (I used to do that, and I've stopped). It allows you to figure out the beginning, middle and end of your story, as well as the rising action, climax, and falling action. Plus, if you have a great idea for your story, you can write it down so you'll remember it.

I find that taking a walk and listening to music is a good mental break. It relaxes me a lot. Also, since I'm very imaginative, I tend to imagine scenes happening in my head while listening to the music.

If you're frustrated with yourself for being unable to come up with any good ideas, take a break and go on a walk. Listening to music is an option, but I find it helps. Walking is also beneficial to your health, so that's a bonus!

In the past, I've gotten a lot of ideas from other fan fictions I've read, books, TV shows and movies. Certain plotlines or scenes may give me ideas that I want to use later. If your story is somewhat similar to a book, movie or TV show, read through that book, or watch that movie, or watch that television show. See if you can get any good ideas from them without actually copying the plotline of them.

This is all I've got for now. I hope that this is helpful to you guys.
