《Writer's Guide》How To Choose a Point of View

For those who don't know, there are three main point of view's, or POV's.

told from "I" point of view.

told from "you" point of view. It's not used often.

Almost like a narrator is observing the characters actions and such and is describing them. This is where you here "he said, "she said" and such. There are certain types of third POV, such as omniscient, but I suggest you search those up on Google because you'll get a better understand.

Fanfiction is complicated when it comes to choosing a point of view because you are not the person/character you're writing about. This is even more so when you're using real people, such as One Direction or 5SOS. However, when you're writing from the perspective of original characters, this isn't as much of an issue, because the character is made up completely.

Let's look at One Direction as an example. I only write One Direction fanfictions, so this is very relevant to me. When I write a fanfic with them in it, I typically write in third person because it just feels easier. First of all, I'm not a boy, so it feels awkward. Second of all, when using real people in stories, the thoughts I write for their character may be ones I disagree with, or they may be thoughts that the boys disagree with. But, when I have an original character, chances are I'll write it in first person (that is, if they are one of the main characters).

One thing I like about third person is that you can get more out of it and can limit what you want readers to know. I also find it easier to write creatively in third person. You can also write scenes with different characters more easily, while with first person, it's harder.

This brings me to another point: switching point of views.

I used to switch a characters point of view in the middle of the chapter when I first started writing. Looking back at that now, I don't really like that so much. Third person allows the writer to write multiple point of views (though sometimes it's not always done well) in one chapter.

Here is one final tip: if you are writing a story or fanfiction where there are multiple main characters (fanfiction examples would be One Direction fanfictions or Supernatural fanfictions), NEVER write in first person. It gets really messy. Third person is much easier, I promise.

In my first two fanfics, I didn't follow these rules. If you guys happen to look at them, just know that I wrote them when I was twelve and thirteen and was new to writing fanfictions. Well, new to writing stories in general.
