《old coffee and cigarettes》Chapter Ten

The first unusual thing Eddie noticed when he woke up, was that he was sprawled on a bed.

That was weird. Eddie hardly ever slept in a bed.

Most nights he'd crash down on his couch, his eyes fluttering shut before he had even hit the pillow, cigarette still in hand, and music blaring at full volume.

The second unusual thing Eddie noticed was the scent of coconut shampoo and fresh grass, hovering in the air delicately.

That was also weird.

Eddie usually woke up to the smell of old coffee and cigarettes, something which shouldn't be as comforting as it was.

The absence of it was what caused Eddie's eyes to open wide, and he bolted up.

Steve was lying next to him, his body turned towards him but his head facing the opposite direction, his dishevelled hair exactly where Eddie's head had been moments ago.

Well, that would explain the coconut.

Eddie felt his breathing slow, the tension leaving his shoulders just looking at the boy lying next to him. He leaned back against the pillow and smiled, drinking it all in, admiring Steve's smile, his eyelashes, his freckles, the way his hair fell back into his face and his chest moved up and down rhythmically with every breath. Steve was gorgeous, there was no denying that.

"How long do you plan to stare, Munson?"

Eddie's eyes widened and he looked away abruptly, embarrassment seeping in. Steve's eyes were still closed, but he was grinning, running a hand through his hair and moving it from his eyes.

"You're awake," Eddie muttered, eyes fixed on his rings, turning his hands so they glinted in the sunlight that streamed through the window.

"No shit," Steve mumbled against the pillow, getting up and rubbing his eyes.

Eddie watched as he got out of bed and threw on his crumpled shirt, stretching his limbs and yawning.

"I'm gonna get a cup of coffee," he mumbled, sleepily, "you want one?"

"Sure," Eddie responded, unable to tear his eyes away from Steve.

Eddie stayed where he was, even after Steve had left, his eyes fixed on the spot the boy had been moments before.

Eventually, he dragged himself out of bed and into the bathroom at the end of the hall, smoothing out his hair the best he could and splashing cold water on to his face. He was reminded starkly of the night before. He rummaged around in his pockets and took out the pills he had stashed in his panic. He hesitated, staring at them and biting his lip. He didn't need them. But maybe he might. He gulped them down with some water from the tap and dried his face with a towel, heading out the bathroom and down the stairs to where the tantalising aroma of coffee drifted towards him.

Eddie vaguely noted Robin and Nancy's absence as he sat down at the kitchen table, Steve humming something to himself whilst filling two mugs with hot water. He smiled when he spotted Eddie, sitting opposite him and passing him a cup.

"Hey."

"Hey."

They sat in comfortable silence for a while, the only sound the setting of mugs on the table. Eddie watched as the dark liquid swirled and danced in his cup, his head racing with thoughts from the night before. Of Steve's smile, his head resting on his shoulder, Eddie's name whispered in the dark... Well, those pills were entirely useless. Maybe he was just tired or maybe it was the way Steve looked at him, but Eddie's thoughts were becoming cloudy, and he was struggling to focus his eyes. The room was suddenly too hot, the walls much closer to him than he remembered them being.

"I should probably get going," Eddie said, longing for fresh air and desperate to get out of the house.

A wave of disappointment washed over Steve for a moment, replaced with a quick smile and a nod.

"Okay, see you later."

"See you," Eddie replied, hastily getting up and walking to the door.

He could feel Steve's eyes on him the entire time, felt them searing into his skin as he threw on his shoes, as he fumbled with the lock and staggered outside. He could still feel them burning into the back of his head as he hurried down the empty streets and back to his trailer, the early morning sun taunting him the entire time.
