《old coffee and cigarettes》Chapter Five

Eddie hardly paid attention to the movie. He was too busy glancing at Steve every few seconds, trying to understand what had happened between them in the hallway.

I'm worried about you, Eddie.

Did he mean it? He sounded so genuine when he said it that Eddie felt butterflies rising in his stomach and goosebumps trailing along his neck just thinking about it.

Perhaps it's just Steve being Steve, he thought. After all, Steve had a tendency to be over the top and he looked out for his friends, no matter what. It was one of the things Eddie liked about him — he could always rely on his help and support. Maybe that was it. Support. Perhaps he just felt inclined to watch out for Eddie after they had saved the world together. Eddie frowned slightly, trying to think of times in the past where Steve had held Dustin's hand or whispered reassurance to Robin whilst standing only inches apart. It didn't seem likely. He knew Steve was protective, he almost rolled his eyes thinking of how Dustin and his friends looked up to him, but this was different. Eddie could feel it.

His thoughts were interrupted when he felt a sharp poke at his side. He looked over to see Steve, much, much closer to him than he remembered them being, a smirk plastered across the sharp features of his face.

"Can you believe they're already asleep and it's not even eleven," he quipped with a nod at Nancy and Robin.

Eddie looked over at where the two girls were lying on the floor and felt a smile tug at the corner of his lips.

Nancy's head was resting under Robin's chin and Robin had her arm draped delicately around her, a small smile etched on her face as they slept.

Yep, Eddie thought, Something's definitely off with those two.

"Come on," said Steve, getting up from the couch, and Eddie shivered when he felt Steve's fingers brush against his.

"Where are we going?"

"Upstairs, Nancy has a spare bedroom and I don't feel like watching this movie anymore."

"What do you want to do instead?" Eddie asked, smirking slightly.

Steve paused, glancing over his shoulder at where his and Eddie's fingers remained intertwined.

He dropped his hand quickly, letting it hang limply at his side.

Eddie felt the corners of his mouth droop slightly, feeling a sort of bitter disappointment wash over him, although he couldn't for the life of him figure out why.

"I just want to talk, hard to do that with Robin's snoring, you know?" He muttered, turning his head and leading Eddie up the stairs.

Eddie tried not to sound too disheartened when he mumbled his agreement.
