《Jack of Clubs (BxB)》1: The Smile Dropped Into A Glare

"Hey Sawyer, you look like shit!" Dennis yelled across the hall to me. I didn't take offense to it though, since it was a normal occurrence at this point. Anyone who was friends with Samson Warner always treated me that way.

"Hey Dennis?" Millie yelled back, her light voice was sweet in comparison to his gruff one.

"What?" He asked. A girl with long dyed-brown hair was leaning against his arm lazily. She wore an expression that reflected how annoyed she was.

"You are shit!" Millie sneered. Dennis simply laughed and went back to talking to the girl.

Millie rolled her eyes and watched me pull things out of my locker. She was my only friend, and I was grateful to her for always being loyal despite my annoying and overly sarcastic personality. Her cropped brown hair had a natural wave, one that shone gently in my peripheral vision each time she moved.

"You and Sam need to get over this stupid rivalry." She muttered under her breath.

I whipped my head towards her and pouted. "You are not allowed to say that name when I'm in a good mood. And besides, it's not stupid."

Millie raised her eyebrows at me, tossing a knowing look my way. Why did she have to be so perceptive?

"Okay, it might be a little stupid." I threw my hands into the air. "But he is the one who started it! If he hadn't tripped me three years ago, this wouldn't have happened."

"Calm down. I'm just saying." Millie smiled softly and looped her arm through mine as we began walking towards class.

I sighed and glanced around. "I know, but you know how much I hate him."

"Oh, trust me, I know." She snorted and sighed softly. This was not the first time that we had this conversation. "I'm not saying that you aren't at least a little justified, since Sam is totally a dick to you." I smiled at her words. "But that doesn't mean that the both of you aren't absolutely ridiculous." My smile turned into a frown.

"I already said that you can't say that name. Also, it's not ridiculous if he is a dick!"

"You said that I can't say his name if you're in a good mood. I figured that due to this conversation, your mood isn't good anymore." Millie concluded. I mimicked her while she spoke.

"Blah, blah. Starting now, this conversation doesn't exist." I stated, ignoring everything she just said. Some may call it dramatic, but I call it out of sight, out of mind.

"You can't do that!" She replied, clearly annoyed by my immaturity. Too bad I didn't care enough to change. Nor did I want to. That was simply the person I was, regardless of what others thought.

I raised a quizzical brow. "Do what?"

She looked confused. "What do you mean what?"

"What are you talking about?" I feigned innocence.

The utter confusion on her face didn't waver. "Huh? The conversation we were just having? You can't act like it doesn't exist."

"What conversation?"

Suddenly, recognition registered on her face. I tried to suppress an amused smile at how long it had taken her. "Haha, so funny." She said humorlessly.

We entered our first period classroom and sat next to each other just like we always did. The first bell rung only seconds after, resulting in a bunch of students to come flooding in like a school of fish.

At the same moment in which I glanced up at the door, Sam entered the room and I was instantly left in a sour mood. His curly blonde hair was styled to seem as though it were messy, as it always was, and his black sweatshirt had a red rose embroidered on it.

He was laughing at something one of his friends had said to him — but the exact moment in which our eyes met — the smile dropped into a glare. I rolled my eyes at him, which earned me an eye roll in return. Then he sat down and class began.

That was how it always went with us.

"Pick a movie already." I groaned.

Millie scrunched her pretty nose at me and stuck her tongue out. "Shush. Every time you whine, I'm only going to take longer to decide."

I let out an exasperated breath and threw my head back. Millie insisted upon having another movie night at her house. It was, unfortunately, her turn to pick the movie. The problem was the fact that she never seemed to pick something, and when she did, it was always one of the same four movies.

"Hmm." She hummed, rereading the same couple of DVD cases. I groaned again. She snapped her gaze back up at me. "I'm going to shove one of these cases down your throat if you whine one more time."

I wondered if I should go against her words and do exactly as she told me not to, but I quickly decided not to do that because I valued my life.

"What about Some Kind of Wonderful?" Millie asked, glancing over towards where I was sat on the couch.

I frowned. "We literally watch that all the time. You can quote the whole thing."

Millie plopped the case down and started rereading the other ones for the millionth time. She was one of the most indecisive people I had ever met. Did I mention that all of the cases she was reading were for movies that she had already watched?

"How does Sixteen Candles sound?" She perked up again.

I laid back and propped my head up on the armrest. "You can also quote that movie."

"Pretty in Pink?"

"That one as well."

Did I also mention that she was obsessed with John Hughes movies?

It carried on like that for a quite a while.

We ended up watching Some Kind of Wonderful.
