The Only One

Chapter 5

Maggie and I spend the whole rehearsal in the lobby talking about random stuff, though it's mostly about the fair tonight.

"You know, I'm really not a huge fair person." Maggie tells me.

"Me either, I'm always so afraid of those huge rides they set up like every other week!"

"I know, right?! The guys played a show once at a fair, and there was a roller coaster behind them that just went in one loop. It was scariest thing ever!"

"Ah! I know exactly what you're talking about! My friends went on that once! They tried to get me on, but there was no way they'd get me on that."

"Gosh, I know! The guys, especially Nash, will try to get us on something like that tonight!"

"I can't really picture Jamie liking thrill rides like that..."

"Oh, yeah, you're right, Jamie is more of the sit back and relax type, but occasionally he will join us on a ride."

"There is one ride you guys will not get me on, and that is the Ferris wheel." I warn Maggie.

"Goodness, I know! I mean, I'll go on at Santa Monica, but not at a fair!!"

"You better not let Nash..." I begin.

"Let Nash what?" Nash asks suddenly.

"Nothin'." I say.

"Lame." He says to me. "Maggie, dear," He says to Maggie, putting his hand on his chest to act nicely, "what was she saying?"

"She was saying that you better not let Nash let me leave the fair without playing balloon darts." Maggie lies smoothly and easily.

"Oh. Alright then. Your wish is my command, Han."

"Thanks..." I smile and Nash goes back inside.

There is an awkward silence and then I ask the question that's been tugging at the tip of my tongue all night.

"So what's the deal with Monica lately?"

"Well, pretty common ex story. The guys aren't friends with her anymore, I am, and blah blah blah. I mean, trust me, I love Monica, but what she did was harsh."

"If you don't mind me asking, um, what happened?" I ask riskfully.

"Well, Ryan caught her with another guy after she told him she loved him."

My jaw drops. I can' believe she would ever do that to Ryan!

"It's okay though, I mean, it just wasn't meant to be, right?" She says.

"Yeah..."

"You know what a bunch of people have been saying though?"

"Mmm?"

"That Ryan is in love with you. Or maybe vice versa. Or maybe even both ways." Maggie says with a sky grin.

"Errm, what?!" I choke.

"Don't worry about it. Doesn't everyone say that about best friends?"

"Yeah, I guess so..."

"Don't take it personal, Han. It's all good. In all honesty, that's what people used to say about Ian and me."

"Maggie, don't even get me started on you two! You're THE CUTEST couple I have ever seen!! And..."

"Calm down, Han." Maggie laughs.

"But just can't hold it in! You are like my definition of perfection! Your cuteness kills me!"

"Thanks." Maggie says with a huge smile.

Before I can reply, Ryan bursts out of the door and says, "Alrighty! We are done for the day! Two hours until soundcheck and until then, WE CAN ENJOY THE FAIR!"

Maggie and I giggle at Ryan's enthusiasm. "Alright, Ry, let's go."

We get into the car and it's just me and Ryan. Maggie, Jamie, Ian, and Nash all decided to go in Nash's car. How convenient of them.

"So, how was rehearsal?" I ask.

"Good. Like I said, just trying out some new music. You wanna hear it?"

"And like I said, you'll never let me hear it!" I smirk.

"Ah, yes, now I remember. Anyway, you'll hear it soon enough."

"I sure will." I say.

Soon enough, we're at the fair, and there are a bunch of people already lined up to go inside. Wowzers. That's dedication!

Yet when I think about it, just a few short months ago, that would've been me along with them...

"Magggiiie," I say. "Would you like to go play that game of balloon darts?" I ask, giving her the eye.

"I most definitely would, Hanna." She says, dragging me off toward the stand as Nash calls after us, "We're going to the roller coaster!"

"Ahah! Success!" I say, and smile at Maggie.

"I knew we could do it!" She says, and high fives me. We're so childish sometimes. I honestly feel like I've known this girl for years, yet I've only known her for a few weeks. "You know, Han, I really feel like we've been friends for so long."

I gave her a surprised look. "Wait, what did you just say? I was just thinking the same thing!"

"Wowww, that just adds to my suspicion. Were we separated at birth at something?!" She asks, looking at me curiously.

I laugh at her enthusiasm, and shake my head. "Unfortunately not..."

When we get to the booth, the sales lady asks me how many darts I want. Of course Maggie and I say 15. I mean, why not?

"15 out of 15, we are good!" I cheer, with a smile on my face.

"Ooh ooh ooh! Can we get the big narwhal?" She asks eagerly.

"Uh, duh!" I say.

"So. It's the narwhal?" The unfriendly lady asks.

"Yep."

"Kay."

"Thanks." I say, just as unfriendly, when she hands me the narwhal.

As soon as Maggie and I get the Narwhal, we book it to the photo booth, and pose for about 20 random poses. In the end, we get 5 photo strips, all different in some way, and head off to find the boys.

"We have time for one more ride." Nash says.

"Okay," Ryan replies.

"So I say we hit the Ferris Wheel before sound check."

Maggie and I exchange worried glances. "Nash, I'm not going on the Ferris wheel."

"Yes you are. We all are."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"Yes."

"NO NASH!" I yell.

"YES HANNA!" He yells back.

"Nash, give her a break." Ryan says.

"No, either we all go on it, or we do not go to sound check."

Ryan gives me an annoyed glance. Goodness! Nash can be so infuriating sometimes.

"Fine. Fine. Fine. Fine. We will go on the Ferris wheel ONCE!"

"Yay!" Nash cheers. GOODNESS!!! ANYTHING CAN MAKE THIS BOY HAPPY!

So, in the end, we go on the Ferris wheel once, even though I'm afraid of heights, Ferris wheels are most definitely not my thing, (especially ones at fairs) and adding 2 extra people into the cart thingy did not help the situation.

For the millionth time this month, Ryan is there to comfort me, every step of the way. I literally cling to him for dear life. If he wasn't here, I'd be long gone!

After our extremely long ride, it's time for sound check. Again, Ryan won't let us near them. Lame.

***

By the time Ryan gets to playing his 2nd to last song, which is Radio, he's so lost in the music. He puts so much power into performing and puts everything he has into music. He's a fantastic role model, and would do absolutely anything for his fans.

My heart starts to melt whenever I see him, or even think about him! Though I'd never admit this to anyone, I really think I'm falling for this boy.
