《The Telmarine Wife》Epilogue

Edmund sat in the same chair, in the same house, doing the same thing he did every Friday night: flipping though the family photo album. The album had been a gift from Sara for his fiftieth birthday. She'd added to it over the years and kept it current. It held pictures from Sara's wedding, and the birth of her son, Alexander. It held pictures from Lucy's wedding and then from Susan's. There were even pictures from their family vacation to the Bahamas in 1998.
Best of all though, Sara had managed to track down the old church photographer who was responsible for documenting all the weddings and she had obtained a copy of Edmund and Lena's wedding photograph. It was Edmund's favorite picture. He could sit and stare at it for hours; that's why he always started at the back of the album so he could end with Lena's face smiling back at him.
"Look at Alex there! Someone really ought to show this picture to the girl he's courting now. If I recall, he spat up on you just after this was taken... Oh, and there it is. I'm so glad Sara got that on film."
Edmund laughed. "I nearly forgot about that."
"Well, that's what happens when you get old."
Edmund smiled and flipped a few more pages.
"Maybe it's the bias in me speaking, but as beautiful as Lucy was on her wedding day, she doesn't hold a candle to Sara on hers."
"She looked like an angel that day," Edmund said as he turned the page.
"Oh, look at Stevie in that one. He looks just like Peter there; poor thing."
He continued his journey through time.
"That one is one of my favorite pictures of Lucy. Sara really caught her personality in that one."

Edmund continued to flip through the book, page after page, until he came to his own wedding picture. He paid no mind to his younger image, but only focused on Lena. He ran a finger down her cheek.
"I've missed you... so much, mi amore."
"Well, I don't know why. I've been with you the whole time, Edmund." Lena took a sip of wine before setting her glass down. "You know what? I think I want to dance. Dance with me, Ed."
Edmund's eyes stayed locked on the photo. Lena was in the middle of a laugh. Even in the black-and-white image, he could see the light in her eyes and the glow in her cheeks. She had never been more beautiful than she was then.
"Please, Edmund? Dance with me?" Lena held out her hand to him.
Edmund thought he could almost hear her laughter.
Lena laughed. "Ed. Edmund. King Edmund. Little King."
Edmund looked up from the album. "Lena?"
"There you are. Come dance with me."
Edmund took Lena's outstretched hand and allowed her to help him stand. "Lena... I... this must be some sort of dream."
"Would it be so bad if it was? Now, we need music. Do you think you can still lead if I sing?"
"There's only one way to find out." Edmund pulled her body against his and placed a hand on her waist. He pressed his cheek to hers as she began to sing.
"Stars shining bright above you... Night breezes seem to whisper, I love you... Birds singing in the sycamore tree... Dream a little dream of me."
He led them in a small circle around the room. There was nothing fancy to it, no spinning, no dipping, just dancing slowly. But as they danced, something remarkable happened.

The old chair he'd been sitting in faded away. The walls of the room melted into nothing and new ones formed in their place. The new walls were different though, more grand, more regal in appearance. As for Edmund, well, he too changed. He de-aged. It started with his hair. The thin and bald patches filled in and the grey became black once more. The wrinkles on his face and hands became smooth skin. His clothing changed as well. Gone was the English-style of clothing and in its place was the attire of a Narnian King. A crown of silver laurel leaves completed the look.
Lena pulled back and smiled. "Welcome back, King Edmund."
"You are as beautiful as the day I married you. How is that possible?" His voice was younger sounding too.
Lena shrugged. "Beauty has no age here. Every day that passes remains as beautiful as the day before." She stepped back to a set of double doors that led into the grand ballroom. "Would you like to meet the other half of your family? They are all eager to meet you."
"Perhaps, but first... can we just dance some more?"
Lena smiled. "I suppose they can wait a bit longer." She pushed off the door and returned to his arms.

Tethered Souls
All humans are connected to the ether, the realm of magic, by invisible, intangible tethers. Tethers are a reflection of humanity, and etheral magic resists what it is to be human. The more 'human' you are and display, the more your tether constricts, restricting the flow of ether. Utilizing ether draws out the human psych, making it extremely difficult to use ether dynamically and for long periods of time. Burning ether allows a person strength unlike any other, sharpens the mind more than any enhancement drug, and allows the person to directly influence the physical world around them.Hugh Perigrine is unique. Orphaned at the age of 1, Hugh is a ward of the Imperial Empire and an acolyte to the Imperial Library. For reasons unbeknownst to him, he does not experience the world in the same way as his peers. He doesn't care for the war with the rebel armies. He doesn't feel the need to vocalize complaints. He doesn't hunt for gossip and there is no object that he cares enough about to desire. He does not fantasize. He is simply unlike everyone else. But Hugh can see things that others cannot, and he understands impossible forces at work around him. Hugh's entire being is latent with etheral power, and he is at the forefront of what is thought of to be possible and impossible. There is however, something that Hugh covets - the meaning behind who he is, why he exists, and where he comes from.
