《The Girl Who Stutters and The Boy Who Mutters》Chapter Nineteen

After Scott and I made it back to campus I think he noticed how edgy I was being so he offered to go to Becca's dorm while I took a nap. I'm grateful that he knows I just need some time to think.

Needless to say, I didn't actually get any sleep during this 'nap'. All I did was stare at our ceiling while laying in bed and thinking about the events that have previously occurred between Scott and I. I sit in silence for a good half an hour before I hear someone hanging on the door. Without thinking I immediately tell the person to come in but I regret it when I see Parker stumble in with bleary eyes and tears streaming down his cheeks.

I can tell right away that he's been drinking.

"P-parker what are you-"

"Shut up you little whore!" He shouts at me. My eyes widen at the fury I see in his eyes and I immediately stand up off the bed and back away from him.

"W-what are you d-doing here?"

"Oh c'mon," at this point his words are slurring and he's smirking at me. "I saw you leave earlier with your roommate. Don't you ever think about how that makes me feel? Slut."

"Parker!" I yell at him. "Y-you and I, we aren't t-together!"

"Well why not!?" He asks as tears begin to stream down his face again. "What's that bastard got that I don't? Is he that good in bed?"

"W-why do you k-keep making c-comments like t-that?" I ask with tears now clouding my own eyes.

"I just want to know why I'm not good enough!" He yells clutching his head in between his hands.

"Maybe it's because you act like a fucking asshole all that time!" I yell at him.

"You don't mean that," he says looking up at me with those angry eyes again.

"Did I stutter?" I'm surprised by how confident I sound, actually I'm even more surprised that I didn't stutter.

"You bitch!" And that's when I feel the of a hand colliding with my face. I look up and see Parker staring at me with wide eyes.

"Oh my god Abby I didn't mean to-" but as he continues to babble about how sorry he is for hitting me I feel an even harsher pain in my chest. I collapse down to my knees and try finding my breath but when I can't I immediately understand what's happening. Something that hasn't happened to me since I was twelve.

I was having an asthma attack.

"What happened?" I ask eyeing Parker as he cowers behind Abby's sister. His eyes are red and he reeks of alcohol. Whiskey maybe?

"I hit her," Parker blurts out. We all stare at him, waiting for him to laugh and tell us a joke but when the guy breaks down and starts crying I know it's true. It takes a second for it to sink it though.

That bastard he...

That bastard hit my girl!

My girl.

In an instant I have him pinned up against the wall with my arm jabbed into his neck. He tries to struggle but my height advantage and the fact that he's heavily intoxicated makes it easy for me.

"What the fuck is wrong with you!?" I yell at him as I jab my elbow further into his throat, slowly making it harder for him to breathe. I'm seeing red right now.

"Scott let him go!" Becca shouts at me tugging on my shoulder.

"No let him Parker deserves it," I hear Anna's voice next. "He hit Abby."

"I don't think you understand Scott though," Becca says tugging hard on my shoulder again but I stand my ground. "Once he gets started it doesn't end with just a punch. He damn near killed a guy once."

I smirk when I see Parker's eyes widen when he hears Becca's words.

"Scott..." Becca says her voice condescending. "You know Abby doesn't want you to go around beating people up for her benefit."

I think about her words and slowly step back but my stare doesn't waver as Parker breathes in and out rapidly. Wimp. As I look at him I don't know why but I instantly feel the anger and frustration taking over and I swing at him.

He over dramatically falls down to the ground clutching his nose and I shake out my hand from the punch I just threw.

"Scott," Becca says and I look over to see her shaking her head but I still see the small smile etched on her face.

"That," I say pointing at Parker. "Was entirely for my benefit."

"Why the fuck won't you let us see her!?"

Surprisingly, this time it isn't me yelling. Anna is yelling absurdities at the head doctor who we first talked to about four hours ago when we first got here. I'm sitting in the chair behind them staring off at the wall.

"Ms. Smith please let me explain," the doctor says rubbing his eyes. I understand his pain, listening to Anna can be downright exhausting. "We'd like to run some tests on Abigail because we are concerned that she may have Myocardial ischemia. It's basically a disease of heart function that's characterized by not enough blood flow to the heart. Shortness of breath or something that could otherwise be thought of as an asthma attack, is a possible symptom of heart disease."

I tense up as soon as I hear his words. Is he saying that Abby could possibly have a heart disease?

"Um okay," Anna says with furrowed eyebrows. "I know I'm in college and everything but I'm not majoring in being a doctor or whatever. So I have absolutely no idea how to take what you just said."

"Just make sure your parents get here soon," the doctor says shaking his head. "We need them to sign their consent so we can run the tests. Otherwise we can't do much more until then."

"But-" Anna begins arguing with the doctor again and I automatically decide to just say fuck it. I stand up and murmur something about going to the bathroom, but Anna doesn't acknowledge that I've said anything. Becca left about ten minutes ago to run down the street and get us all some coffee from Starbucks.

There's no one paying attention to me when I slip into Abby's room. I don't know why I didn't just do this earlier.

I don't bother closing the door cause I just need to see her for a minute. I walk over to her and look up at the heart monitor that is beeping at a steady pace. I pull a chair up next to her and immediately take her hand in mine. I jump a little and drop her hand when her heart monitor starts beeping faster and louder.

I look towards the door to see if anyone noticed but everyone outside seems to be preoccupied. I lean forward and rest my head on Abby's bed as I gaze up at the girl that was making me feel like I was one of those guys straight out of a hallmark movie.

"Don't worry Abby," I say yawning as I close my eyes just to rest them for a minute. "I'll save you."
