《White Lies || Scaramouche X Reader》Chapter 16 - Him again?

《Your POV》
It had been 2 weeks since you parted ways with Scaramouche. Time felt like it was going by so slowly.
You went back to Mondstadt a few days after the incident. Of course, you distanced yourself from everyone else. You started accepting less and less commissions from the guild, they began to wonder what had happened.
Aether attempted to contact you multiple times. He swung by your place almost every other day, checking to see if you were there. Perhaps he was worried and felt bad for you, or maybe he just pitied you.
But every time, you wouldn't answer. You wouldn't say you were depressed, really. You just had a lot on your mind, and being around people made it worse.
Of course, you had to leave sometimes to eat or do the very few commissions you accepted. You needed money, after all.
One particular day, you went out to Good Hunter, hoping to buy a last minute dinner after being in your house all day. A few Fatui members walked by. Mondstadt regularly had groups of Fatui waltz in and out, especially as of late.
You overheard them talking. One of the men turned to the other, "Man, Lord Scaramouche has been in a particularly bad mood recently.."
Hearing his name made you freeze in your tracks. You felt as though you couldn't move.
The other shivered, "Right? It all happened after he disappeared for a few days.. I wonder what drove him that insane?"
"Whatever it was, I hope it gets fixed soon.. word has it that he's going to be visiting Mondstadt on official business, and I'm not ready to die just yet!" The man said as they walked off.
You glanced over at the two Fatui men who had their backs towards you. He was coming to Mondstadt? You didn't know if you could handle that. Should you have left? Maybe fleeing to Liyue was a bad idea, after all, it was possible to run into him on the way there.
But if you stayed in Mondstadt, there was a high probability that he'd see you. You wanted to avoid any awkwardness at all costs. You didn't know what to do. You were so desperately hoping that he wouldn't come for a few days, so at least you had time to think up a plan.
Just as the thought left your mind, someone walked up behind you.

"Y/N?"
You froze, again. You knew that voice. Your heart started racing, you felt dizzy too. Not him again..
Turning around, you saw him. Scaramouche was standing right in front of you with two other Fatui soldiers.
"You know this person, sir?" One of them asked.
All Scaramouche had to do was turn around glare at the solder and that made him shut up. He really was scary.. he wasn't joking when he said nobody likes him.
He waved them away, and they quickly walked off, as if they were terrified of what would happen to them if they didn't.
You were finally able to break your silence, "W-What do you want?" You tried so hard to hide the fact that your hands were shaking.
"It's good to see you again." He said, his expression turned into a gloomy one.
"Well that makes one of us," you began to walk away when he took your hand.
He sighed, "Please hear me out."
You looked him in the eyes. It was the first time you'd gazed into his eyes since you found out who he really was. Honestly, you really missed him, it's true. But at the same time, you despised him for lying to you. You simply just wished you two had never met, that would've made the process much easier.
You sighed, "Fine. But not here."
The two of you went to a more quiet place behind some buildings where nobody could hear your arguing, the arguing that you thought would happen.
You glared at him, "Alright, make it qui-"
Suddenly, you found yourself in his embrace. You refused to hug him back, yet oddly enough you didn't push him away. It was so strange. Now that you knew who he really was, him showing affection seemed.. out of character.
He was a Fatui Harbinger, the most dangerous people of the Fatui, maybe even in all of Teyvat. Yet here he was, innocently hugging you.
He held you closer, "I'm so sorry. Honestly, I thought I could forget about you, but turns out I was wrong."
You were stunned, was he hugging you because he didn't want you to see him as he said these things to you? Or because he didn't want you to run?
"To be honest, Y/N, I'm scared.. I'm really scared. I don't know what's wrong with me, and I don't know why I feel like this," you could feel him squeezing you tighter, almost like he was holding back tears, "I never wanted it to turn out this way, but now I can't stop myself from thinking about you.."

You could tell he was being genuine. You knew what being scared sounded like, and that was it. Again, it seemed so out of character for him. A harbinger? Scared? Like that would ever happen.
"Feeling like what..?" You asked.
He pulled away, his face only an inch away from yours, "Y/N, I think I really like you."
Your face became a flustered mess as you felt his breath on your face. You felt really confused and conflicted, but honestly, you really liked him too. But you still didn't trust him completely. Plus, he was a harbinger. The very people you despised.
You sighed, placing your head on his shoulder so you didn't have to look at him, "I still don't know if I can trust you.."
"I know, you don't have to trust me yet. I lied to you, and I'm sorry. But I swear to you, that's the only thing I lied about." Scaramouche said.
You lifted your head up, "No more stupid white lies?"
"No more lies." He smiled at you.
You looked away, "But.. you're a Fatui. And a harbinger at that."
Scaramouche still had his arms around you, "So? I feel like you're trying to find more excuses. If you don't like me, just say so." He pouted, obviously trying to lighten the mood.
"N-No thats not- I-"
Suddenly, he started bursting out in laughter. This man was completely different from the one you saw earlier. The one that only a glare from him would make people scared out of their mind. Did you do this to him??
You started panicking, "Oh no, I broke one of the harbingers.." you said under your breath.
Scaramouche eventually stopped laughing and just stared at you. "Now what..?" You asked, genuinely curious. How would you make this work? He's a Fatui, you're just some random adventurer for the guild. You can't just follow him around as you'd please.
"Hm, just join the Fatui."
"NO WAY." You yelled, glaring at him. You knew he was being sarcastic, but the thought of joining the Fatui gave you chills.
Scaramouche lightly chuckled, "You're adorable when you're mad."
Your cheeks turned bright red as you pushed him away from you, "GO DO YOUR FATUI BUSINESS OR WHATEVER." You paused for a few seconds, "I'll wait for you.."
Scaramouche gave you a gentle smile, "Alright. Meet here again at sundown." He waved back at you as he walked away.
"Wait," Scaramouche said as he stopped, walking back over to you, "One more thing."
He stood in front of you, giving you a soft kiss. Much softer than the one before. You were baffled, you saw it coming but it still shocked you.
"I'll be back, don't miss me too much~" he teased as he walked away for good.
You just stood there. Suddenly you realized what you got yourself into, you knelt down on the floor, silently screaming at yourself. You felt as though you just sold your soul to the devil or something. You knew it was wrong yet it felt right.
After some thought, you started to cringe at yourself. You went two whole weeks without him, you thought you were just fine. You didn't need him in your life.
Yet after he showed up out of nowhere, only to act all cute and sad, you caved.
You caved and you hated yourself for it. He lied to you but you couldn't resist. You had to admit though, you felt the same way about him.
Did you really want this? Was your liking for him really worth the pain? After all, you were sure the harbingers weren't allowed to engage in romance. You'd have to keep it a secret, not only from the Fatui, but from the Adventurer's guild as well. If they found out you were associating with him, they'd kick you out for sure. Then, you wouldn't be able to accomplish your mother's dream.
You were determined to keep this as secret as possible. Part of you wanted to just break it off already, the pain of keeping it a secret would be too much. But the other part of you applauded yourself. You've got to be really strong to be in a secret relationship with the enemy, and try to fulfill your mom's lifelong dream at the same time.
Before you knew it, you had quietly drifted off to sleep. Thinking too much made you really exhausted, so you thought you'd simply take a nap until Scaramouche came back.
