《The LOVE of a BETA》Chapter 16: Wolf UP

"Caleb. Go get a shower and some rest. You've barely left her side. She's out of danger and you need to make sure that you aren't stressing the pups in your belly" Brian tells me looking over her blood work.
It has been one-week since the attack and Sariah continues to lay in the hospital between unconsciousness and a coma. Fluids with vitamins and protein have been pumping through the IVs attached to her arms ridding her body of the concoction Nero had given her. It had been a mixture of wolfsbane and rohypnol.
Color has started returning to her skin and every once in a while she will give off a small whimper. Over the course of the week, one small section of her hair from the top of her head down to her waist has turned white. I nor Brian have an idea as to why. Jack couldn't find any records of it happening elsewhere in the werewolf database. Only thing I can think of is it might be a side-effect of her body fighting the toxin. Her brothers and Felix think it's the coolest thing ever. Seth asked if she would have magical powers like the girl from Frozen...I had no idea how to answer him.
Blood work from yesterday showed that the poison has been flushed from her system. Now we just need her to wake-up.
I have been with her for the most part, only going back to the pack-house for a shower and a change of clothes. Dane made sure that I was brought food and had a bed brought in. Her brothers and the younger kids from the pack have decorated the room with drawings and flowers. Every day, Gideon has read to her and Seth sits next to her and watches TV. I am proud of how strong they have been through this whole ordeal.

Dane is another story. After the first-night, he detached emotionally from us. I know why, it's written all over his face. He thinks that he failed at protecting Sariah. He doesn't see the truth—he saved this pack and her.
Once the final count was taken, of the fifty rogues that attacked, all were killed but two. They managed to escape into the woods. I have never heard of that large of a rogue pack attacking with such precision. Rogues typically fight for control and are unable to sustain obedience. Ten of our warriors sustained critical injuries but we had no deaths.
All rogue attacks are reported to the North American Werewolf Council—they document them to detect patterns or large groups. Two-days after Alpha Jack reported the attack, five council members from across the country arrived. They met with Alpha Jack and Dane for hours regarding the pack's training and strategy. They interviewed the pack's warriors and guards asking about the rogues movements and communication. Two of the best trackers came from Colorado and North Dakota searching for the two missing rogues and the pack's base camp. So far, they haven't found anything.
Dane has become obsessed with finding out how Nero was able to disguise his and the rogues scents for so long. Finding spray that masks one's scent is not un-common but it usually doesn't last long. It would take a lot to mask that many rogues. That's all he talks about.
He comes to see Sariah everyday but doesn't stay for long. His eyes are full of guilt and he can hardly look at her without tears forming. That's when he quickly finds an excuse to leave. Alpha Jack and Felix both have told him that it's not his fault, but he won't accept it.
I need him to come back to us. I am tired physically and emotionally. I need my mate.

I link.
Can you ask Felix? I am about to patrol the perimeter.
I yell back in frustration.
I didn't hear a response but ten minutes later, I can smell his scent. He's standing right outside the door. I kiss Sariah on the forehead and head out the door. Grabbing his arm, I drag Dane to a secluded spot in the hall and a week's worth of emotions floods out of my mouth.
"Stop what you are doing! You're hurting our family" I yell with clenched fists. His face is blank and he doesn't say anything.
"You have detached yourself from us, from me! Now you listen because this is the last time I am going to say it. You did not fail to protect Sariah. You saved her and this pack from destruction. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. You don't get to detach emotionally from your family, it doesn't work that way. You have a mate and pups that need you. So WOLF THE HELL UP and get your head out of your ass" I roar.
Dane's face twists in despair and tears flow down his cheeks. I almost feeling guilty for yelling at him...almost. I pull him towards me and wrap my arms around his torso. He puts his head in my neck and I feel his body sob. He stays like that for several minutes for several minutes before calming down to an occasional whimper.
He pulls back and I wipe the tears from his cheeks, reaching up and give each eye a kiss. Warm hands take my cheeks guiding them so our foreheads rest against each other.
"I need you Dane. I can't do this without you. I don't want to do this without you" I plead.
"I'm sorry love. I promise I won't ever leave you alone like that again" he chokes out.
We stay like that for a little longer before he pulls his head back and tilts it slightly.
"Wolf up? Really" he smirks.
"Hey...I was being inspirational" I counter.
He gives a true belly laugh. It feels so good to hearing him laugh again. I didn't realize how much I missed something so small.
Dane hands reach down and started rubbing circles on my belly. I can feel the pups inside jump from his touch. He looks so cute with his eyes closed listening to their heart-beats.
"I love you Caleb" giving my forehead a kiss.
"I love you too. Now go be with your daughter" I tell him giving his ass a smack before I turn and leave for the suite.
