《Mrs. Maximoff》One

Moving to a new town means starting over.
It means forgetting everything you ever went through and live like it never happened.
It's as if you're kinda reborn, actually.
Or at least that's what you think.
That's what ted talks want you to believe, the people around you trying to comfort you instead of falling into an uncomfortable silence. That's when you wish people would just shut up instead of making you believe everything will be different, or even worse, better.
You can't forget what you were or what you did because those are the things that made you what you are in your present.
It's fucked up, right?
Being the result of so many years spent wondering where you were going to end up, just to find out it's nothing like the expectations you had.
At least, in the best of cases, you don't live with your parents anymore.
"Y/N, wake the fuck up!" Morgan's voice rang loudly in my ears, at least they didn't use their trumpet this morning.
Yeah, they did that.
But that's just because the neighbors complained about the noise, otherwise, they would have done it again.
"You're so fucking annoying, you know that?"
My feelings about sharing an apartment with my best friend are very mixed.
I mean, we split the rent, so I guess that's a pro.
On the other hand: do I like them being an early bird? Absolutely not.
Does it benefit me because I'm always late? Yes, it does.
Are they always this fucking annoying? Yes, but I put up with it because I, unfortunately, care about them too much.
"Yes, but you love me," They bragged, whilst fixing their hair. It was seven o'clock in the morning and they were already dressed up for work.
"Do I, though? Are you sure I'm not just using you for this apartment?" I said, slightly exaggerating, which only earned me a glare from them.

"One more word and I'm telling Stewart to leave you at the bus stop," Morgan warned me, turning their head toward the mirror, and concentrating on their hair again.
"Oh, not Stew Stew! I love the guy!"
Stewart is Morgan's personal driver, and also kinda mine. Oh yeah, Morgan's parents are extremely rich. They even offered to buy us this apartment so that we wouldn't have to rent it, but as convenient as that would be, Morgan and I both want to finally be responsible adults.
That sounds way funnier than it should.
I finally got up and went to get ready for the day, and as much as I tried to ignore the pressure, it's important that I don't mess this up, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that my life depends on this.
I have an interview at Oleg Resources with the CEO, Mrs. Maximoff.
She inherited her father's publishing house after he passed and she's looking for new journalists since she wants to start from scratch.
I didn't want to do it, but when I saw the article online and told Morgan about it, they talked me into it and convinced me.
I have an English Major at Columbia, and even though my biggest dream is to be a New York Times best-selling author, I figured I'd start with smaller things first and try to get as much experience as I could, and this opportunity definitely came at the right time.
I did my usual morning routine and then picked out an outfit for the day, thankfully Morgan and I share clothes without any problem, so I went looking for something from their part of the closet since I know I don't really have the right clothes for this occasion.
I put on a beige pantsuit and a white shirt underneath, it's starting to be slightly chilly now that it's almost Halloween season, and not only is this comfortable but also kinda warm.

"So, what do you think?" I asked Morgan, making jazz hands which I know made them cringe, that's why I always do them.
"Okay, Morgan Stark. Knock 'em dead," They kissed my cheek before they got out and walked to work.
"Ew."
I put on my usual jewelry and then looked into the mirror, fixing my hair. I just brushed them and let them down and that was it.
I just had to leave.
I took my phone, but most importantly my notebook and my favorite gel pen and left to find Stewart waiting for me by the car.
"Morning Stew Stew!"
"Please Mrs. Y/L/N, it's just Stewart."
"No, it's Stew Stew. Always was, always will be. I can change it to Stew Driver if you want...hey that matches your name and your job!"
"Please, shut up and get in the car,"
I did as he said and got in, feeling the tension build up as soon as he started driving.
I held onto my mom's necklace throughout the whole drive, feeling her closer than ever.
She travels a lot and I don't get to see her often, but I told her about this and she's never been more excited before.
The radio softly played while I just looked out of the window, allowing myself to get lost in thoughts for a little bit.
"Mrs. Y/L/N, we're here. Good luck on your interview," Stewart said, opening the door for me.
"Thank you, Stew Driver,"
He scoffed at the nickname making me laugh.
I adjusted my jacket and made my way into the vast building, it all looked so fancy.
I wasn't very used to all of this, I mean, yes, my best friend's parents are madly rich and they see me as one of their own but thinking that this could be my daily life? Walking through this door and seeing all these people? Mad crazy.
"Hi, sorry, I have an interview with Mrs. Maximoff, I was wondering which floor I had to go to?"
"Yes, of course. Interviews with Mrs. Maximoff are on the twentieth floor, you'll recognize her office."
"Okay, thank you very much."
I took the elevator with another person and we both went to click for the twentieth and last floor.
"Interview with the devil?" They asked me.
"Yeah, assuming the devil you're talking about it Mrs. Maximoff."
"Of course it is. I'm Jules, I go by she/her." She held out her hand and I shook it.
"Y/N, I also go by she/her."
We stayed silent until I really couldn't help myself anymore.
"Why did you call her the devil?"
"Oh, just...one of my friends had the interview a couple of minutes ago and she said she's kinda...terrible. As a human being."
Okay, I'm definitely scared now if I wasn't scared before.
"Amazing. This is just what I needed," I thought before we both got out of the elevator and were met with a few people waiting in the hall.
To say that they all looked terrified is nothing, it was as if they had the thing they all fear the most right in front of their eyes.
Jules and I kept talking, she's very nice, I like her, we also agreed on getting coffee together after this is over.
And then our chatter was interrupted by the sound of a door opening, showing a tall brunette woman with bangs holding papers.
She looked into everyone's eyes and with a firm, steady voice she said:
"Y/N Y/L/N? You're next."
There goes nothing.

At least, that's what Zachary thought when he found himself on the streets after being kicked out at seventeen. It hadn't been his fault. His father had used him as a scapegoat and won his mother over, thinking that her husband was telling the truth about his cheating and that Zachary was the one who was bringing women over, trying to ruin their marriage. It wasn't anything special, but after three years he'd managed to spruce up the place and make it almost-bearable to live in. Over the years he'd made friends with random people he often passed on the streets and did manage to hold down a few random jobs, but like everything else, they came, then went. Now he was left with fifteen dollars and twenty-two cents, a torn blanket, one outfit, and a dream for a better life.
