----------

Parker staggered out of our bathroom, barely catching himself on the kitchen counter, he was in there a while and I was starting to get worried.

"Are you okay?"

"Perfect." He wiped his nose on his sleeve, "Let's get this over with, I snorted like three sleeping pills so I've got like five minutes before I'm gone."

I wasn't too happy with the situation, but if he wasn't going to argue with me, I wasn't going to complain.

I cut the cellophane on the steak and set it on his lap.

"God, the smell..." He trailed off.

It was an interesting thing to watch, the way everything about him faded when his eyes glowed yellow. If I had been a rational person it would've been terrifying, but it didn't happen often. He was nothing like the vampires we hunted, they're animalistic, vicious. The only time I ever saw a slight comparison of it was when he was hungry and even then he fought it well.

There was no hesitation as he devoured the steak, the blood flowed down the tattoos on his arms which he licked up.

After a few seconds, his eyes flashed to their usual dark brown.

"How do you feel?"

He leaned his head back against the couch, "... Goodnight."

"I'll take that as "good"." I pat his knee and threw a blanket over him.

I sat back in my desk chair, at least I'd have a few quiet hours for once to get stuff done.

There's an alert program I had set up on my computer, it scans most news reports on its own and saves any deaths reported as "suspicious". It might have taken me far too long to perfect but seeing as most of my process isn't, well, legal, everything had to be perfect and undetectable.

From there I would manually scan over what it flagged. If the incident didn't sound human-related I would hack into the local police department's online records to determine if what I was looking at was suspicious, in the vampire sense. This typically leads to some gruesome crime scene photos, but between that and Parker's art, it takes quite a bit to shake me.

From there it was fairly easy to determine if what I was looking at had anything to do with vampires based on autopsy records, manner of death, that sort of thing. The world isn't exactly privy to everything we had the pleasure of knowing.

So I got to read some outlandish theories as to the causes of death. The latest is that there was a serial killer cannibal with the MO of ripping their victims' throats out, even though these deaths go back for decades, maybe centuries. Or there’s the wild animal loose in the city theory. I hear that one a lot and it seems to be the one everyone comes back to. I have no clue where it started but it was clear it wasn't going anywhere.

There was nothing new as of this morning, well nothing abnormal, I suppose. Living in a strange city like Seattle we were bound for more... abnormal deaths.
