《Dusk & Dawn》Chapter 18

There was a loud banging at the door which made it shake and fly open, splintering off the hinges knocking out the few guys standing behind it. Through my watery eyes I saw a kaleidoscope of people being thrown around the room.

"You're a fucking dead man Chris!" I heard Mason's voice growl with such intense anger it sounded like a man possessed.

"Oh my God! Quinn! Quick lets get you out of here!" It was Lexi's voice. The men holding down my arms had left me to go fight. Lexi cut the tape from my legs with the keys and pulled my arm up and around her shoulder for support. I couldn't stand, my knees kept buckling under my weight.

There were glasses smashing and wooden furniture being thrown. A few splinters of glass flew past my face and there was a thud of a body behind me.

"Guys I need help, she can't stand." Lexi said, her voice quivering.

"Quick, lets get to the car before they come to." I hear Zach to my left. I was tired of fighting. My eyes were too heavy to keep open anymore. All my energy had been sucked dry.

I could hear everything but kept my eyes shut willing the evening to be just a bad dream. Lexi's shoulders left from underneath my arm and I was enveloped by a strong, warm embrace. Just by the touch of his skin and the sweet smell of him, I could tell it was Mason. One of his arms cradled my back while the other was under the crook of my knees. I wrapped my arms around his neck and rested my head on his shoulder as he ran through the rain. The sound of crunching wet gravel and heavy breathing was all I could hear until we got to the car. Mason slid into the backseat still holding me. Lexi and Zach slammed their doors and the car was rolling down the hill before Zach put the key in the ignition. He floored it, kicking up rocks behind us and gaining traction once we left the driveway and hit the road.

"Is she okay? Why is she shaking?" Lexi's worried voice going a million miles and hour from the front seat.

"It's okay babe, Mason's gonna check her temperature and vitals. The first aid kit's in the glove-box." Zach said in a calm voice. I heard the glove-box open and shut abruptly. Zach quietly comforted Lexi with soothing words as Mason unzipped the kit and started opening plastic packets.

"Thank you." I managed to whisper leaning on his shoulder. He ran his hand through my hair and gently kissed my forehead.

"I'll always find you." He whispered, his warm breath blowing against my wet hair

I opened my sore eyes and Mason was looking back at me with a look of pain on his beautiful face. He told me to be careful and I failed him. The pain of disappointing him is almost unbearable. i must look weak and pathetic and i brought it all on myself.

I look down at his chest unable to meet his eyes and yet another tear escaped and cascaded down my face.

"I'm... so... sorry." I hoarsely pushed out. He wiped my tear away with his thumb and shook his head.

"It's not your fault. I should have been there to protect you."

He frowned, looking angry at himself. I began shaking my head. No, don't blame yourself. I was the one who didn't heed your warning. Punish me, not yourself.

He put his finger to my lips.

"Shh, we can talk later. You need to rest." He guided my head back to rest on his shoulder and his arms pulled me in tighter. He put a thermometer in my mouth and put his index and middle finger to my neck to take my pulse at the same time. His hands worked methodically.

My teeth began to chatter uncontrollably and the shaking spread throughout the rest of my body. It felt like all the nerve endings were being electrocuted, I couldn't stop trembling.

"We need to get her to a hospital Zach. I think she's been given Flunitrazepam." Mason said trying to cover my ear.

"What the fuck is that? And how the hell would you know that?!" He asked in a sceptical tone.

"They're roofies, idiot. Chris' cousin smuggles it in from Columbia." Mason wrapped his arms tighter around my body rubbing my back to keep me warm.

"Mason... I'm so cold..." I couldn't feel my hand or feet and my body continued to shake in attempts to warm me up. With my eyes closed I heat the sound of a long zip and Mason's weight shift beside me. Through slitted eyed I see that he's taking off his shirt.

"C'mere baby..." He pulls my body to him and envelopes me in his embrace. His hands rub up and down my back as I wrap my hand around his waist. I rested my cold cheek against his bare chest and zoned in and out to the rapid beating of his heart.

The car came to an abrupt stop and everyone got out of the car like their lives depended on it. Mason ran with me in his arms through the emergency room doors with Zach and Lexi jogging behind him.

"We need help. I think she's ingested Flunitrazepam and her tremors started about ten minutes ago." Mason said sternly to the clerk nurse.

"Quick, let's place her on a bed and get her through to the doctors immediately." The nurse hurried from behind the desk and led us to an empty bed on wheels. Mason placed me down carefully and squeezed my hand. They all followed as the nurse wheeled me through the long fluorescent lit hallways.

"Lets get these wet clothes off you darling." The nurse said pulling on my glove.

"No no no no! Lexi?! Don't let him see. Don't let Mason see!" I cried flailing my arms about. The nurse stopped wheeling me for Lexi to calm me down.

"Don't worry Quinnie, I wont." Lexi said standing next to me, her hand on my shoulder reassuringly.

"Can we do this once shes in with the doctor? She doesn't like to show certain parts of her body." Lexi explained in a hushed voice to the nurse. We began hurrying down the hallway again. I clutched my hands to my chest, shaking profusely.

"As you wish. Now are all of you family?" She asked hurriedly. Zach put his hands in his pockets and shook his head.

"Uh, well, no, but we're her... friends." Mason tried to reason with her. The nurse waved her hand in front of her.

"No, sorry. Only family can accompany patients while they're in a critical state. You'll have to wait out here." She said quickly pushing the bed through the doors towards the doctors.

"Wait! I'm her sister, I'm coming!" Lexi called out and ran to catch up. Even though she wasn't my real sister, I'd happily take her as my family. At that moment laying on the stiff hospital bed staring up at the bright lights quivering, I was grateful for Lex. For all my... friends.

As I was wheeled through the emergency door the last thing I saw were Mason's eyes full of worry and tears? I outstretched my arm to him, the colours in the room spinning and circling my vision.

Fat tears roll down onto the hospital linen as I whisper Mason's name. I clutch my dog tag around my neck and the bed continued to be wheeled through the corridor, the metal wheels clacking over every imperfection in the linoleum.

I warm hand quickly embraces mine and I feel soft lips brush mine.

"Hold on... You're gonna make it..."
