《Beneath The Surface》Chapter 28: February🎀

Sunshine, do you have 5 minutes to spare me?

Sure. What's up?

You're at home right?

Yep, going back to Naga tonight ^^

Look out of the window ^-^

Tell me that the person waving at the gate isn't you

Can you come down for a while? Just 5 minutes of your time, I promise

1 second

I'll be waiting <3

"Where are you going ate?" Jill asked as Aika headed for the door.

"Nat's at the condo gate. I'll be back in 5 minutes, mama." Aika looked to her mama.

"Take 10 minutes if you need, Aiks." VP Leni smiled at her oldest.

"Nat! Aren't you supposed to be work?" Aika looked at her watch. It was 5pm on a Thursday.

"This is technically my lunch break." Nat grinned.

"Lunch? It's 5pm?" Aika gasped.

"I had a coffee, I'm good." Nat knew Aika hated when he skipped his meals.

"Do you wanna come up? We're all home and I think we have some food." Aika offered.

"I would love to but I don't want to disturb. Plus, I have a meeting tonight..." Nat pouted.

"So you drove all the way here to see me for 5 minutes? And you have to rush back without eating?" Aika was worried.

"Couldn't let you leave without saying goodbye...go crush the campaign and I'll try my best not to miss you." Nat looked around before hugging Aika. Just in case there were people that recognised Aika.

"I'll miss you and Jamie too. I'll try my best to call you guys whenever I can..." Once the campaign officially kicked off, Aika would be constantly on the move.

"Don't worry about it. Just remember to take care of yourself. Drink lots of water, eat your meals and if you ever need someone to talk to, I'm always on standby 24/7." Nat encouraged Aika.

"Now that it's actually starting, I'm a little scared." Aika confessed.

"Hey, it's okay to feel scared. It's totally normal. Give it your best shot and try not to worry too much. Trust in Ma'am, her team, the People, yourself, Tricia and Jill. You guys are the best." Nat held Aika's hand. Aika's phone buzzed.

"I'm being summoned..." Aika checked the text from Tricia.

"If you're not busy, text me when you land in Naga." Nat reluctantly let go of Aika's hand.

"See you, muscles." Aika nodded.

"Love you, sunshine." Nat whisper-shouted so he wouldn't attract too much attention. He starred as Aika's figure disappeared far into the building.

"Hi lola Leni! Daddy and I will be cheering for you from Manila! We love you!" Aika was on a call with Nat. It was the night before the start of the 90 days.

"Thank you my little cutie..." VP Leni sent Jamie a heart. The girl was too sweet.

"Dad reminded me to tell you that he's always ready to help over in Singapore. One word from you and you have the us behind you, Ma'am." Nat relayed his father's message.

"Take good care of Rocco for me, kuya!" Tricia chimed in. Rocco was at Nat's house for the time being is Gaile and her husband were busy as well.

"Yes Doc, I'll make sure to send daily updates of your precious anak to you!" Nat chuckled. Jamie and Rocco made a good mischievous duo.

"Rest well for tomorrow and the days ahead, everyone. Do let me know if you need anything!" Nat said goodbye to the rest of the family before Aika went into her room.

"Hey, I just confirmed by schedule for the next 3 months..." Aika grabbed her iPad and sat on the bed. It was packed to the brim.

"Wow...that does look really busy. I imagine Ma'am would be twice as busy..." Nat looked at the photo that Aika had sent him.

"The powerpuff girls have been activated across the country. I'm actually excited to get to talk to as many people as possible. Tell them about the work that mama has done and what plans she has for them." Aika smiled. She was immensely proud of her mama.

"You know, Gabe suggested that I set up Twitter and Instagram..." Nat shared.

"Why the sudden suggestion?" Aika chuckled.

"He said it would be the place for me to get the quickest updates about you and your family. And of course, to keep track of public sentiments." Nat explained.

"Mr Rodriguez has a point but social media can be such a powerful double-edged sword at times...Lots of disinformation and fake news tends to spread through such platforms." Aika sighed.

"Let's hope that 90 days will be enough to incite hope and a fighting spirit in everyone..." Nat encouraged Aika.

"Hopefully. We'll try our best and see where it takes us, I guess." Aika smiled.

"I won't keep you up anymore. Have a good rest tonight. I love you, sunshine." Nat waved goodbye.

"I love you too, big boy." Aika waved as she let out a yawn.

Presidential Candidate Leni Robredo kicks off 90 days with daughters, Aika, Tricia and Jill in Naga City

"Boss, someone is here to look for you." Gabe knocked on the door when Nat was catching up with the campaign news after his meeting.

"Am I expecting anyone today?" Nat was confused.

"No but she said that you'd recognise her name. Ms Alyssa Carlos." Gabe read the name he got from the lady at the counter.

"Let her in." Nat wondered how Aly had found him at the office. He never told her where he worked.

"Boss, Ms Carlos is here. I'll leave you two." Gabe bowed slightly as he closed the door behind.

"How did you find me here?" Nat asked straightaway.

"It wasn't difficult to search you up on LinkedIn. It's great to see you do so well, even in the Philippines." Aly was surprised when the saw the word "General Manager" in Nat's profile.

"What was so urgent that you had to come all the way here instead of telling me when we meet on Sunday?" Nat crossed his arms.

"I came to give you this. And also ask you out for lunch." Aly handed a brown envelope to Nat.

"You came all the way for this?" Nat held up the legal agreement, the one that gave Aly and Marco legal visitation rights.

"I figured you could sign it and I'll take it to the lawyer's office afterwards. Marco said there was no point dragging things out..." Aly shrugged. Her tone was different than usual.

"I'll look through it and send it to the lawyer myself. No need to trouble you." Nat unknowingly cut Aly off.

"Sure. How about lunch? I know a good Japanese restaurant nearby." Aly blinked twice.

"I have a meeting soon. Plus, I don't think we should be having lunch together." Nat wanted to draw a clear line.

"Well, see you on Sunday then." Aly gave Nat a lingering look before she left. Nat starred at the door for a minute, wondering why Aly suddenly felt so foreign. You're overthinking things, Nat.

The following parties, (Mother) Alyssa Germaine Carlos-Hernandez and (Stepfather) Marcus Daniel Hernandez will have the right to see (Child) Jamie Lee Jia Wen at least thrice a month, either on a fixed day or after mutual agreement with (Father) Nathaniel Luca Torres-Lee Kai Wen. Ms Carlos and Mr Hernandez will have the right to request for alone time with the child for a maximum of 3 days, given 10 days prior notice.

"Boss, the legal team said there was nothing wrong with the agreement. Most courts will agree to such terms, especially since the Mother is still on the child's birth certificate." Gabe placed the agreement on Nat's table. Nat had got Gabe to consult their legal team for any issues, just in case.

"Even the one where they get to spend alone time with Jamie for a maximum of 3 days?" Nat questioned.

"Yes, even that. You mentioned that it's been almost 5 months since Ms Carlos first met Jamie right? If they have interacted for this long, it's likely a given too." Gabe nodded.

"Anything I can add? To protect Jamie?" Nat flipped through the pages.

"They did say that you could add a clause about Jamie's preference. If anytime during the 3 days, Jamie expresses her intent for you to bring her home, you are allowed to do so." Gabe pointed to the post-it on the last page.

"Do me a favour and get the team to add that in please?" Nat wanted every single clause that could protect Jamie to be in the agreement.

"On it now, boss." Gabe took the paper and left.

"God, why is this so complicated..." Nat ruffled his hair and leaned back on his chair.

Hope Day 1 went smoothly. I saw the pictures <3

Don't need to reply if you're busy or tired, just wanted to let you know that I love you so much <3

Sleep early if possible and take care of yourself <3

I love you, sunshine <3

Aika had barely stepped out of the shower after a long day to the train of messages from Nat.

Day 1 was great ^^

I love you too, muscles <3

Don't miss me too much <3

Aika was waiting for Nat to reply but her eyelids were getting heavy.

Hi kuya, just in case you were wondering. This is ate now...

Tricia had sent Nat a picture of Aika sleeping on the bed while holding her phone. Nat smiled. Seeing Aika made him feel better instantaneously.

Thanks, Doc. I'll make sure to give your anak a treat tomorrow

Enjoy the parenting, kuya. Good practice for your future.

Don't let your ate hear you ^-^

Did I say anything?

Have a good night, Doc. I'll keep your lover boy company while you're gone.

I'll keep your sunshine company in exchange ^-^

Nat and Stephen had agreed to catch up tomorrow while their girlfriends were busy campaigning. There wasn't much the guys could do since they were tied down by their own jobs.

"Daddy, do you have pictures of lola, ninang, tita Tricia and tita Jill?" Jamie snuggled next to Nat.

"Come here, Princess..." Nat gave Jamie a big hug as he stroked her hair.

"What's wrong, Daddy?" Jamie knew her father was acting off.

"Nothing, Daddy's just has something on my mind..." Nat sighed.

"Do you miss ninang?" Jamie looked at her father.

"I do but that's not what's bothering me...It's 9pm already, time to get you to bed, Princess." Nat chided himself for ruining the mood.

"What is it that's bothering you, Daddy?" Jamie asked as she was tucked into bed.

"Huh? It's nothing...Sorry that I made you worry, Princess." Nat regretted his slip of the tongue earlier.

"It's okay Daddy, maybe I can be of help? I'm great at giving advice!" Jamie held Nat's hand.

"Oh really? Hmm, so I have to sign an agreement with somebody regarding someone else, but I'm not sure if the someone else will want it to happen..." Nat decided to give it a shot.

"Does the someone else know about this? If it is about this someone else, shouldn't they know about it?" Jamie questioned. Nat fell into deep thought.

"Daddy...Daddy!" Jamie called out to Nat.

"Uh, right...Princess, you're right. I should let the someone else know about it." Nat looked at Jamie, realising that she was right.

"You should talk to them about it!" Jamie was glad to be of help.

"I should..." Nat nodded. As Jamie drifted off to sleep, Nat stared at her, wondering how he would bring up the issue.

"Good morning Daddy!" Jamie took her seat on the dining table.

"Morning, Princess. So...Daddy wanted to talk to you about something." Nat sat down opposite Jamie.

"Hmm?" Jamie took a sip of her milk.

"About your weekly meet-ups with Auntie Aly...would you be okay if you stayed over with her sometimes? Without Daddy around?" Nat broached the question.

"Stay over with Auntie Aly? And Uncle Marco? Alone?" Jamie was confused.

"If you don't want to, it's totally okay. I will never force you to go with anyone, never." Nat assured Jamie it was okay to say no.

"Hmm, I'm okay but why? Why did Auntie Aly ask you to sign an agreement like this about me?" Jamie had already joint the dots from the conversation yesterday.

"Uh, when I said agreement, I didn't mean that you were going to be traded or anything like that, Princess. It's just that...you know how ninang is busy helping lola Leni and Daddy can sometimes get so busy with work, so Auntie Aly and Uncle Marco offered to help look after you." Nat didn't want Jamie to get the wrong idea but couldn't tell her the truth either.

"Oh, okay...but why is there an agreement? Why can't I just stay over?" Jamie furrowed her eyebrows.

"Oh uh...it's for safety reasons. Not that I wish it happens, but in the rare case that you fall sick or something happens, Auntie Aly has permission to make decisions for you." Nat scrambled an answer.

"Hmm, okay! I think you can sign the agreement, Daddy. The someone else is okay with it." Jamie nodded. Nat didn't know whether to laugh or cry at how smart Jamie was.

~

"Daddy, when can we see ninang again? I know she's busy but I really really miss her..." Nat had just picked Jamie up from school. Her yaya wasn't feeling well and couldn't make it for the next 2 days.

"Hmm, I miss her a lot too...how about you pray and ask God when ninang will be free? You never know, he might listen to your prayer?" Nat suggested, stifling a laugh.

"Dear God, I hope that lola, ninang and tita Tricia and tita Jill are doing well. If it's possible, could you help ninang come back to Manila for a while so I can hug her and give her strength? Amen." Jamie opened her eyes after her serious prayer.

"Hey sweetie...Wanna give ninang a hug?" Aika was in front of Jamie with her arms open wide.

"NINANG!" Jamie jumped into Aika's embrace.

"I missed you too, sweetie." Aika kissed Jamie's forehead.

"Your ninang only has 3 days in Manila before she has to fly off to another province...she specially came to say hi to you!" Nat wanted Jamie to know. He himself was surprised when Aika told him that she was able to come over for a while.

"Thank you for coming, ninang! I missed your cuddles, your kisses and everything about you..." Jamie didn't let go of her hands around Aika.

"Princess, ninang is tired...can't you come down?" Nat was worried since Jamie was still clinging onto Aika.

"But I'm only 20kg! Ninang carries heavier weights at the gym!" Jamie retorted.

"Sweetie, you said that you wanted to show me something you did in school right? How about you go grab it from the room while I help Daddy with dinner?" Aika let Jamie down, giving Nat a wink. Nat chuckled. Aika was always one step better than him.

"We drew this at school last week!" Jamie handed Aika the A3 paper.

"Wow, that's a lot of people you drew!" Aika counted 9 people in the drawing.

"Grandpa, Grandma, Karine, lola Leni, tita Tricia, tita Jill, Daddy, Ninang and Jamie!" Jamie named everyone as she pointed at the characters.

"Wow, you even drew roses for lola, tita Tricia, tita Jill and me?" Aika noticed the roses immediately.

"Yep! To cheer lola Leni on for the campaign! Daddy says it's a really really important campaign that you are helping lola with! He taught me this too!" Jamie held up a "L" with her hand.

"I should take a picture and send it to your lola Leni, I'm sure she'll love it..." Aika snaped a picture and sent it to their group chat.

"How's the agreement coming along?" Aika and Nat were catching up after Jamie had (reluctantly) gone to bed.

"She seems to be having fun. Aly and Mr Hernandez are handling things pretty well. Looking better than I expected, honestly..." Nat shrugged.

"That's good to hear. What's with the hesitation then?" Aika knew from Nat's voice.

"I don't know when is a good time to tell Jamie the truth. And if this will lead to something more..." Nat confessed.

"What do they think?" Aika returned the question.

"Mr Hernandez has actually talked to me in private, saying that he would like to speed up the process and he assured me that he would be a good stepfather for Jamie. As for Aly, she seems to sway back and forth...it's confusing." Nat remembered the talk he had with both of them. The mixed signals weren't helping.

"As long as you put Jamie's interest first, I know you'll make the right decision. I'll be here, with you." Aika placed her hand on Nat's heart.

"How is it that you know exactly what I need. God, I love you. You're here for a breather but ended up having to listen to my troubles..." Nat held Aika's hand and kissed the back of it.

"Spending time with you two is considered taking a breather. You know how much energy Jamie's hugs and kisses give me." Aika leaned on Nat.

"We have 15 minutes, right?" Nat checked his watch. Aika was bound for the airport in 90 minutes.

"I have a flight..." Aika was cut off by Nat's lips. The next 15 minutes flew past with the blink of an eye.

"March is going to be crazy but I know you'll do well, my little rockstar." Nat whispered as they broke apart.

"I'll call you as much as I can." Aika promised.

"Don't worry about that. Just focus on Ma'am and the campaign. And please take care of yourself and if you need me, just call." Nat repeated his words.

"I will, old soul." Aika chuckled. Nat nagged more than her mama.
