《A Silence Full of Sound》Chapter 5

Weeks had past, just like the first. I'd managed to keep up with my classes without falling behind. Alice and I had got insanely close. Sammy and the football team had been working towards their first game of the season.
Sammy had become friends with the other new member of the football team; the good looking, blonde-haired boy that had joined the team the same time as Sammy. Turns out his name is Jake. Jake had joined us at our lunch table for the last couple of weeks. Alice went google-eyed when he joined us, and I don't think she's recovered since.
I haven't seen the green-eyed guy since that day in the park. I thought that maybe he was avoiding me, but I quickly pushed that out of my head, why would he be avoiding me?
Sammy's big day had finally arrived. The big football game. Sammy had been getting himself all worked up all day. Dad has given him many pep talks, calming his nerves. Now with an hour before the game started, me and Sammy walked back to school. Mum and Dad were driving and meeting us there later on.
I had put on a cute bardot red top and my white jeans, to represent the school colours. Sammy was twitching as we walked, I couldn't tell whether it was nerves or excitement.
"You ready?" I signed.
"No." He signed back.
I laughed a little, knowing full well that once he was out on that field, there would be no stopping him. "You're going to be great. I'll be in the stadium if you ever need convincing." I signed back, trying to take away some of his nerves.
"Glad I've got my number one fan" he signed back with a smile.
"Always" I replied before he pulled me into a massive bear hug.
We walked the rest of the way in silence, Sammy got into his focused mindset, and I didn't want to interrupt that.
When we reached the school, Sammy gave me a hug and I returned it with a thumbs up and a smile before he ran off to meet Jake to warm up ready for the game. I spotted Alice over by the school gates.
"Hey girl, you okay?" She said to me as I leaned on the gate next to her. I looked at her and smiled.
"Are you as nervous for them as I am right now?" She said motioning over to Sammy and Jake, watching them as they walked into the locker room. I looked at her and nodded my head.
"Come on, or we'll miss the good seats." She said before taking my hand and leading me to the stadium.

My legs bounced as the final minutes of the game played before us. Our team had been doing well, we were currently drawn with the other team. The other team was good, like REALLY good. Every point we scored, they then scored. Every block we had, they then blocked.
It wasn't that I didn't think we could win, of course we could, I was worried about our team, what it would mean if we didn't. What it would mean to Sammy if they didn't win.

As I watched, I could feel Alice sitting on the edge of her seat. Both of us hoping that we would make one shot. That's all that we needed. Just one.
We watched as Sammy ran across the field, the ball clutched safely in his hands. Most of the other team were behind him, trying desperately to catch up, but Sammy was fast. But there were three boys on the other team charging straight at him. 'Boys' is the wrong term to use for these guys. They were men. Big, heavy, muscly men and I knew instantly that no matter what Sammy couldn't take three of them at the same time.
I looked desperately around for someone who could help. My eyes landed on Jake, not even two feet behind him. I stared at Jake, as if trying to send a telepathic message.
As if he received it, Jake suddenly ran past Sammy, waving his arms frantically to get Sammy's attention.
Sammy passed the ball to Jake and the three men didn't have time to even think. Sammy swerved out of the way of the men and the three of them crashed into each other, sending a domino effect backwards into more team players. Jake sprinted the remainder of the field with Sammy right behind him.
Alice grabbed my hand and squeezed, but I couldn't take my eyes off the field. This was it, this was what we needed!
Jake reaches the end of the field and smashed the ball straight into the ground just as the final second draws to a close. They had done it!
Sammy quickly bounded into him not being able to stop the momentum and the two of them fell on the floor.
Everyone was on their feet. The crowd was going nuts! Me and Alice banged on the seats as I could see people around me screaming and cheering.
The boys were still huddled on the ground. Once they had regained their breath they both helped each other up, hugged and clapped each other on the back, celebrating their victory.
After the game, Alice and I waited patiently to meet the boys. They finally emerged from the locker room and I couldn't contain my excitement.
I bundled over to Sammy, he picked me up and swung me around. I could feel the vibrations of his laugh ripple through his chest as I clung onto his neck.
He put me down and said "We did it, Riley!"
I grabbed his hand and gave it a squeeze. I playfully punched at his stomach and he blocked all of my attacks.
Next to me I could see Alice giving Jake a hug, probably congratulating him. I turned my attention to Jake as Alice came over and hugged Sammy. I grabbed Jake's arm and pulled him in for a hug.
"Thanks." He said after I let go, clearly understanding my meaning. I smiled and jumped around and clapped to show I was excited for them both.
One of the other players came over to speak to the boys and Alice walked over to stand next to me.
I couldn't make out what he was saying, but Sammy looked over at Jake and they both smiled and nodded their heads.

Sammy turned to me and Alice. "The team's going for food at the local diner, come with us?" He said. In the distance I could see the other boys waving Sammy and Jake over.
Alice grabbed Jake's hand and ran over to them. I wasn't completely sure. I didn't want to bring the mood down by not being able to understand the people around me.
Sammy saw the hesitation in my face and grabbed my hand. His gave me his famous puppy dog eyes and I cursed myself for always giving into them.
I rolled my eyes and nodded, as if to say "Fine. But you owe me" and walked over to the rest of the players with Sammy beside me.
The local diner was quite small. I wondered how we would fit so many football players in the building and how many booths we would actually fill.
The diner had a sixties theme going on. The whole building was black, white and red checkered. The walls were lined with framed pictures of old black and white posters, and there were mini jukeboxes on each table, which I'm guessing, controlled the music playing. All that was needed was for the serving staff to be riding in on rollerskates!
Alice, Sammy, Jake and I rolled into one of the booths near the back doorway. The waitress, rollerskate-less much to my disappointment, took our orders and didn't try to hide her flirtatious manner at all. I was used to people flirting with Sammy in front of me, but it didn't mean that I would like it.
The boys ordered meals whereas Alice and I only ordered shakes. Within minutes a 'strawberry deluxe' milkshake was placed in front of me and I smiled at the waitress to thank her.
As I was turning my attention back to the glorious looking milkshake in front of me, something in the corner of the room caught my eye.
There was someone with half closed book in their hand, earphones in their ears, watching as the world went by. His green-eyes hungrily raked the room, as if trying to understand an alien species around him. A half drank chocolate milkshake sat next to his hand, keys and a wallet sat on the other side. He reached up and ran his fingers through his black hair before opening up his book again and continuing to read.
I quickly tapped Alice on the shoulder. She took a break from working on her Coca Cola float to look at me.
I pointed to the green-eyed boy, and made a questioning face, as if to say 'who's that?' Her gaze followed my hand and her eyes finally landed on the boy. An emotion flashed on her face but it was too fast for me to recognise what it was.
She looked back at me. Her eyes softened. "That's Hunter. He a bit of a weird one." she said before taking another mouthful of her shake.
I made a confused face. She gulped and rolled her eyes at my persistence. "I don't really know him that well. Nobody does. He tends to keep himself to himself."
I looked over at the boy, finally taking in his appearance. He was wearing the same black ripped jeans and those black converse high tops. He didn't seem to care what he looked like or what anybody else would think about what he looked like. Whilst reading his book he was completely absorbed in his own world, and to me it seemed like bliss.
I turned back around to the table. I looked over at Sammy and waved to get his attention. He looked over at me, and I put one finger in the air to indicate that I'll be gone for a minute, before I slid out of the booth and started walking.
Maybe it was the fact that I was curious about what he was reading, or maybe it was because I hadn't seen him around for weeks. Maybe it was a different reason, but whatever it was, I found myself walking over towards him.
When I reached his table, he was still engrossed in his book. I hadn't thought this far out in my head. I didn't know what to say to him.
I decided that a simple wave might just spark the conversation up. I waved in front of his book to get his attention.
He quickly looked up at me, I couldn't tell whether he was annoyed that I had interrupted his reading session.
Recognition flashed on his face as his eyes locked with mine. I smiled and waved again, hoping to somehow diffuse the awkward tension in my body.
"Hi. It's Riley, isn't it?" He said as he closed his book.
I smiled and nodded, surprised that he had remembered my name, when ten minutes ago I didn't even know his.
"What are you doing here?" He asked. I pointed over at the football team and shrugged. From where we were standing I could see some of the players goofing around and the rest laughing. Sammy, Jake and Alice were joining in on the celebrations.
He followed my gaze and shrugged. "Oh right." He said looking back down at his hands. He murmured something but I couldn't make out what it was because he kept looking at his hands.
When he looked back up at me his gaze had hardened. I showed a confused face, trying to convince him I didn't know what he said.
"Actually, I kinda want to get back to this. I hope you don't mind?" he said pointing to his book and opening it back up again. As soon as he finished speaking his head was buried back in the book and I knew that not matter what I'd say or do next, he wouldn't be listening.
I slowly walked back over to the group. When I reached our booth, Alice tapped me on the shoulder.
"What was that about?" she asked as she looked over at Hunter.
I just shrugged and went back to my milkshake, all the while my eyes never left that green-eyed boy.
