《Lost Queen [5] ✓》a secret: something you tell everybody to tell nobody

woke up, "Don't Wanna Know" pounding in my ear.
After five minutes of speeding and cutting people off, I finally got to the school.
I sat behind Stella, who couldn't stop texting. When she saw me, she whipped around, her blue eyes wide.
"Did you see the news last night?"
"No, I'm grounded, remember?" No TV, computer, laptop, or phone. I was going crazy.
"They think werewolves are real. Like, legit,"
My heart almost stopped.
Did she just say what I thought she said?
"Wait, what? Tell me more." I begged desperately.
"I'm not kidding, the government just released a statement that said the investigation is over and that it's totally possible for werewolves to exist. The President's already authorized tests to see who's a werewolf or not."
"Ohmygod."
Was this really happening? I was honestly hoping this would all fade away or blow over. Why would the government review something as petty as a YouTube video? I never thought it would get this serious.
I was scared, not because they found out, but because my friends might find out about me.
All I wanted was to be normal like them, I didn't want this curse.
Stella went on, "I know, right. I feel like a character in a book or something."
I felt all the blood leave my face.
How would people react when they found out?
"Everyone, focus! We still have to review for your test tomorrow." Ms. Lawrence said impatiently. But obviously, no one felt like actually learning.
Then the intercom came on.
"Students in grade nine please report to the auditorium, students in grade ten please report to the gym, students in grade eleven please report to the cafeteria, students in grade twelve please report to the LGI. Thank you." The line went dead with static.

"What's happening?" I whispered.
"I don't know." Stella whispered back. I had a feeling it had to do with the whole werewolf thing.
Ms. Lawrence sighed, "Alright, we'll review after."
We all walked to the cafeteria, which was full of everyone in my grade and people in lab coats roaming around. Some of them were setting up some sort of machine. It smelled like blood and medical crap.
"Please get in one of the four lines." A feminine voice at the front kept repeating and I got in line behind Stella. It was more like a chunk of people smushed into a tiny space instead of distinct lines.
Someone tapped me on the shoulder and I turned around to see Roan, "What's happening?" He shoved his hands in his jean pockets as I gulped nervously.
"I think they're doing tests to see if we're werewolves." If what Stella said was true, which I really hoped was not.
"Oh shit." He hissed.
"They're going to find out." I prayed to God they wouldn't find out.
"We have to find a way to leave."
"But how? Aren't they taking attendance?" I pointed up at the tables, which was a long distance away from us. But I could hear them asking for names.
Someone clapped their hands, getting everyone's attention.
I tried to get a look at the person talking but all I could tell was that it was the same woman who was at the front. I assumed she was the boss or something.
"We know it's confusing and kind of scary, but we're doing the best we can. Lycanthropes contain a specific mutated gene that isn't present in humans. We've found a way to isolate the gene through a simple DNA test. It will only take a couple of minutes."

Wow, the power of science.
I got onto my tip-toes and tried to see what was going on.
The first person, some junior girl whose name I didn't know, was ushered up to the machine. The doctors reassured her as she hesitantly placed her arm in the machine. I saw her wince as her DNA sample was taken.
"Negative." I heard the doctors say and they directed her to the right side.
The next person went up and took the test. Another negative.
"Maybe they'll mess up." Roan mumbled and I hoped so.
The line started moving a little quicker but I wanted to stay back. I could feel myself getting extremely anxious.
When we got closer to the front, I felt my heart rate climb. Everyone was watching. Everyone would see.
I saw Taylor and Nicole already on the other side with everyone else. Both of them waved at me and Stella. Stella waved back but I gulped.
By the time it was Stella's turn, there hadn't been a response other than "negative". The entire left side of the cafeteria was empty, which didn't really make me feel any better.
"Name?" The doctor person asked her.
"Stella Agron."
He wrote it down and gestured to the machine, "Go on and put your arm in the machine. It will only feel like a prick."
"Alright, let's get this over with." Stella sighed and rolled up her sleeves.
Her result came back four minutes later, "Negative."
"See you on the other side," She gave me a two thumbs-up and walked over to where everyone else was standing, joining Taylor and Nicole.
Everyone was going to hear, everyone was going to see. Everyone was going to know.
But the worst thing I was going to lose was my best friends' trust.
"Name?" I flinched, not ready for this. I contemplated on giving him another name but decided against it.
"Lia Deliz."
Please don't do this.
"Put your arm in the machine, please," The doctor person instructed and I slowly inserted my right arm.
Please don't work. Please break.
I counted down to four minutes, hoping this wasn't happening. My worst nightmare was happening right before my eyes. And I wanted to wake up.
Relieved I wouldn't be the only werewolf from the school, I turned to Roan before my darkest secret was revealed to the entire school.
"See you on the other side."
He didn't reply or give me any reassuring gesture.
And then that was it.
"Miss Deliz?" The same doctor questioned and I nodded, anxiously awaiting my results, "Positive."
