《Who Are You?》XIX

Lindsey tried his best to stay calm, as he concentrated on what Stevie and the twins were doing, but the bouncing of his leg didn't stop. It was almost Kristen's due date and he could get a call any time now. Stevie suggested him being with the woman for the last couple of days, but Kristen refused the offer, when Lindsey called her about it. He kept going into the nursery, to make sure everything was there and in its place. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he wondered whether Kristen would change her mind again, once she saw the baby. He couldn't deal with that. He hadn't even seen his son yet, but Stevie was right, getting bits and pieces of fatherhood would never be enough.
"Linds." Stevie repeated for the forth time, trying to get his attention. "Lindsey!"
"I'm sorry, what is it, hon?" He finally heard his name.
"It's for you." She said, holding the receiver in her hand. "It's Kristen." She added with a smile and Lindsey rushed to take over the conversation.
While Lindsey spoke, Stevie willed herself not to listen to it. After her girls were born, she wanted to have another baby, although she hadn't told Dave, or later Lindsey, about it. But then that tragic pregnancy happened and she was sure her last chance was taken away from her. Even though the doctor told her she shouldn't lose all hope, she decided that she wouldn't try again, because she couldn't deal with disappointment if she didn't conceive, or worse, another loss. And now, Stevie knew she was going to be a mother again, she din't have a lot of say in that, but she hadn't carried the baby, she wouldn't give birth to it. She didn't doubt she would love the boy, but still, it wasn't going to be the same.
"We have to go to the hospital!" Lindsey brought Stevie out of her thoughts.
"We?"
"Well, yeah... what, you don't want to go?" He asked, sounding disappointed.
"I, um... sure, okay." She smiled weakly.
"Can we go too, Mommy?" Aria asked, with her eyes sparkling. Once they were told, the twins were very excited about having a little brother.

"But it might take hours for the baby to be born, sweetie."
"We'll be patient, I promise!"
"Will you now..." Stevie muttered to herself, then shrugged. "Okay, you can come with us."
After a quick change of clothes, the four of them were in the car, Lindsey speeding over the limit all the way to the hospital. They were directed to were they could wait through the delivery, once they got there. Aria not looking too excited anymore, with her surroundings.
"You said we might wait for hours and we'll spend the whole time here?"
"That's right, baby. I warned you, didn't I?" Stevie looked at her daughter pointedly, before the girl crawled into her lap, Mabel siting down by her side.
"You did, but I thought you just didn't want us to go with you."
"When did I ever not want you with me, sweetheart?"
"Never."
"That's right. So, now you have to sit and by quiet. No whining, little miss!" Aria sighed heavily, laying her head on her mother's chest. "Linds? Aren't you going to go in there?"
"What, you mean..."
"In there, that's what I mean. I'm sure Kristen could use you there, even if all you can do is hold her hand and encourage her to get through it."
"Yeah, but she doesn't want me there. She told me. I'm not sure I want to be there myself anyway." Lindsey saw Stevie frown. "What?"
"You got her pregnant, at least you could go in and say, 'you're doing great!', childbirth is no fun, trust me."
"Stevie, I know." He said, slightly irritated. "But we discussed it and decided the best would be if I just waited out here."
"I would have killed Dave if he hadn't been by my side."
"Please..."
"Okay, okay. I'm done."
Hours later, Kristen's mother came out to tell Lindsey that the baby was finally here. He looked over at Stevie first, with Aria and Mabel both sleeping on her chest. She gave him a smile and told him to go meet his boy, the three of them were going to be fine.

When Lindsey went inside, Stevie started to wake her girls up, as they could soon go home and sleep in real comfortable beds. She was surprised that Mabel was the first to ask about the baby, as she was usually the quiet one.
Lindsey returned just a few minutes later, with a wide grin on his face. Stevie stood up, opening her arms, as he hugged her tightly. "Congratulations." She said, reaching up to give him a kiss too.
"I can't wait you to see him too! I want to bring him home already." Lindsey beamed, then looked at Aria, who started to ask.
"When can we meet our brother?"
"Soon, sweetie. The nurse is going to take him to clean him up and check him out properly and he'll be with other tiny babies for a while, while we're allowed to take him home with us."
Satisfied with the answer, Aria returned to her seat, but Stevie remained where she was, lowering her voice. "Are you saying, Kristen won't be seeing him again?"
"No." He shook his head, sighing. "She said she doesn't want to, that he's ours now."
"I'm not going to even say anything." Clearly, having a lot on her mind, Stevie sat down again.
Lindsey went back inside to talk to Kristen one more time, to make sure whether she truly meant what she'd been telling him these last few months, because there won't be any going back after her final word. This time he took longer, but when he got back to Stevie, he said that Kristen is not changing her mind and she will sign all her rights over to Lindsey.
"Anyway... I think we can go see him now."
"Okay." Stevie smiled, taking Lindsey's hand as they began walking, Aria by Lindsey's and Mabel by Stevie's side.
They stood on the other side of the glass from all the newborns, Lindsey pointing at his son. "That is William."
"He's so tiny!" Aria squealed.
"You were just as little too, baby." Stevie said, Lindsey moving to stand behind her, his hands placed on her front.
"Are you okay?" He asked, while the twins were yelling out things they'll want to do with William.
"Just fine."
"Really? I know this isn't easy."
"It's okay, Lindsey, honestly. We'll have him with us from day one, he'll know you as his father and me as his mother from the very start."
"Thank you for being the wonderful person that you are."
She looked over her shoulder, smiling a little. "I think I should thank you. I didn't know who you were, I tried to push you away, but you fought for me, you didn't know if I ever would, but you made me fall in love with you again. You reconciled me with my parents, my friends. You're a fantastic father to Aria and Mabel, and now, you've given me another baby. What else can I ask for? Despite that you've told me probably every single thing you remember of me and us together, it's getting close to a year, since I... since I met you and my memory hasn't come back. But honestly, I don't care. I'm happy, never been happier than I am with you. We'll make tons of new memories as a family."
Lindsey was left speechless for a moment. "You mean that? You don't want your old life back?"
"I really don't care, as long as you're in it."
He spun her around and gave her a kiss, holding her close to himself.
"I love you, Lindsey."
"We love you too, Daddy!" Aria and Mabel wrapped themselves around the two, making them laugh.
Lindsey drew back slightly, sighing happily, looking at the only woman he had truly ever loved, glancing down to smile at the twins, as he then looked past them and fixed his eyes on his newborn son. He finally had everything he ever really wanted - a family. His biggest dream coming true at last.

He said to me, wiping away more of my tears while I was too distracted by the explosion of flavour in my mouth.I rubbed my irritated eyes and he fed me another kiwi slice. It tasted good but it made my body shiver a little from the little sting it had in its taste."Is it too sour? Sorry about that." He chuckled, gently raking his fingers through my hair as I relaxed a little.I wanted more. I liked kiwi."You want more?" He asked me.I looked at the kiwi and then at him. He really, really wanted me to talk. He fed me the rest of the kiwi pieces even though he hadn't gotten an answer from me and then he smiled."All done."
