《Who Are You?》VIII

Aria had her forehead pressed against the car window, as she watched Lindsey walking towards the front door of where her grandparents lived. She had never met them before, but she was still so excited, she wanted to go with him.

"Why is Lindsey going there without us, Mommy?" Aria asked Stevie, who sat in the front.

"Because, umm... because we can't just barge in there, baby." She really had no better answer.

Lindsey took off his sunglasses and knocked on the door a few times and waited, before Barbara opened up. He didn't get a word in, when she opened her mouth. "You found her?"

Lindsey nodded and walked inside the house, following Barbara. "But there's something I have to tell you first."

"Well, what is it?"

"Stevie's different."

"How do you mean?"

"She was involved in a serious car accident some years ago and, um... She lost her memory, she doesn't remember one thing about the life she lived before it happened."

Barbara gasped and Lindsey thought he'd have to catch her as she seemed about to faint. "Where did you find her? Does she know who you are?"

"In France. I was there on vacation and by complete accident I saw her on the street. Now she knows me, yes, I've been telling her about everything since the day we met, I've shown her photographs, we listened to music together... I'm doing everything I can think of to help her return to how she was. The only thing that resurfaced for her was a lyric from one of our songs, but besides that..." He trailed off, feeling as if he had shocked enough. "Stevie will tell you the rest herself and there is a lot to tell, but so you know, we came back to California together and she's been staying with me the last couple of days. Well, she and... and her two daughters."

"My Stephanie is a mother?" Barbara sat down, somehow trying to process this information.

"Yes. They're outside, I'll ask them in now." Before he left, Lindsey added. "I know it hurts you immensely, but... she's not your Stephanie, Barbara. At least not yet." He sighed, knowing how hard it must be to hear. "Let her talk, okay? She really... she looks like Stevie, sounds like Stevie, but she's not her."

Barbara nodded, tearfully and tried to compose herself, before Lindsey returned with Stevie and her girls.

"Let's go inside." Lindsey said, as he opened the door for Stevie. "Your mother is quite shaken up right now, but... there's no other way around this."

She took his hand, clenching it tightly. "Be there with me?"

It was quite erotic in a way, how he slid his arm around her waist inside her jacket and drew her closer, when he nodded and pressed a kiss to her temple. "You know I will be, holding your hand if you need it." Then he opened the door for the twins and led the way for them into the house.

Barbara managed to tell Jess about what was going on by the time the four walked in and he was in the living room, waiting to see his firstborn daughter after so many years. The second Barbara caught sight of Stevie, she couldn't fight back tears any longer.

"Can I please hug you?" Her lower lip trembled as Stevie let go of Lindsey's hand and took a step towards her mother. "Oh, my sweet girl..." Barbara cried, holding her daughter tightly. "You have no idea how much I've missed you."

After a moment Barbara guided them to the living room, where Stevie greeted her father as well, then everyone sat down, Aria climbing onto Lindsey's lap, while Mabel clung to Stevie by her side.

"I can't believe I'm a grandmother to such pretty girls!"

"This is Aria and this is Mabel." Stevie said, taking Lindsey's hand again.

"They look just like you, sweetheart." Jess said without thinking, only then it occurred to him, it might feel uncomfortable to Stevie, but she didn't say anything.

"I think they do, too." She agreed, brushing hair out of Mabel's face.

"Hey, would you like to go outside into the backyard? There's a swing there." Lindsey suggested, knowing Stevie needed to talk to her parents honestly and she could hardly do it with the girls around.

"Will you go with us?" Aria looked up at him expectantly, while he looked over at Stevie, who gave him a small nod, indicating she was fine on her own.

"Of course."

The three of them left and Stevie clasped her hands, not really sure how to begin. "I'm really sorry I am this way, it must be so painful for you."

"We know that you're fine and doing well, Stephanie, that's all we can ask for." Her father said, his calm tone of voice putting her at ease.

"Is that how you've always called me?"

"Always." Jess replied.

"Lindsey tells me everyone else used to call me Stevie, he does too, I'm getting used to it actually. I quite like it."

"Well, it was you who chose that name for yourself, because you had the hardest time in the world pronouncing Stephanie."

She smiled, relaxing more as she leaned against the back of the couch. "Is there something you'd like to know about what I've been up to?"

That question sounded so formal, but her parents understood, this wasn't hard only for them. "Lindsey mentioned you lived in France?"

"Yes, this whole time. I loved it there, but when he came in to my life I wanted to come back here, at least for some time. We lived in a spacious, three bedroom apartment in this beautiful part of the city, my girls and I. And their father of course..."

"What... what happened to him?"

"Well, I thought he was my husband, I thought we got married and moved to Paris, but Lindsey said it was a story he made up, that he was not at all the man I thought he was. He kept my identity away from me for eight years. I guess... I guess you know him, seems like everybody did while I was still here. Um... David..."

"Oh, sweet Lord!" It was getting too much for Barbara, she had hoped this part wouldn't come true. "Oh, Stephanie, why him?"

"He was amazing to me once we were there, he really was, completely different to what Lindsey told me."

"Really?"

"Yes. We had spent a little over a year in France, when I got pregnant with the twins and he was very supportive throughout the pregnancy and once the girls arrived, he truly was a great father. We had our issues, but who doesn't? Just that he turned out to be such a liar..."

"Is he out of your life now?" Jess asked, through clenched teeth.

"Absolutely. I don't want anything to do with him and I don't want him near Aria and Mabel."

"Good, that's good."

They spent talking at least two hours, before Barbara told Stevie, the four of them were staying at least for the night, and went on to making dinner, as Stevie gladly helped her, while Lindsey spent time with Jess and occupied the girls.

Later that night, Lindsey found Stevie sitting on the porch, with a cup of steaming hot tea, obviously deep in her thoughts. He sat down next to her and noticed silent tears rolling down her cheeks. He wiped them away and she smiled sadly.

"What is it? Why the tears?"

"They love me so much." She simply said, sniffling.

"They do, they're very proud parents. But you know, everyone loves you, Stevie. You don't have to feel bad or guilty that you can't remember. Life sucks, a horrible thing happened to you, but like I said, your parents, your friends, who you will meet again soon, I myself, we're all willing to try and help you. And even if it doesn't work, if that line from Frozen Love is the only thing you recall, then so be it. It... It doesn't make me love you any less."

She lay her head on his shoulder, her tears now soaking into his shirt. "So, you do still love me?"

"Well, if that kiss didn't tell you that..."

"It did. It told me so much, Linds."

"I still love you. Strangely, now, probably more than ever before."

"Why?"

He shrugged, not really sure what to reply with. "I don't know... Maybe... maybe now I know how truly special you are if I've fallen in love with you twice in one lifetime."

"You know the one thing I wish more for than to regain my memory?"

"What's that?" Lindsey asked mindlessly, looking ahead of them.

"To fall in love with you, too."

He jerked his head, casting his eyes on her, as she simply snuggled into him, exhaling deeply, after she took a sip of her tea.
