《Who Are You?》VI

To Lindsey it seemed like he had just gotten into bed, when he felt being gently shaken, as well as he heard a woman's name calling his. He groaned and turned on his other side, knitting his eyebrows, but Kristen repeated for him to wake up again.

"Lindsey, it's time to get up! Our flight is in two hours."

He slowly opened his eyes one by one and looked at her, sighing heavily. Without a word, he went to the bathroom, glancing at the alarm clock on his way, which read 10:19 am, he barely slept. After using the toilet, Lindsey washed his hands and splashed some cold water on his face to try and look more awake.

Kristen seemed ready to go already, dressed up and make up done, but Lindsey slipped under the covers again, making her frown. "What are you trying to tell me?"

"You go, Kristen. I'm staying."

"Excuse me? Did I hear it right?" She stood at the foot of the bed, hands on her hips.

"Stevie needs me." He simply stated and closed his bloody red eyes.

"No she doesn't! She told you that loud and clear. Will you ever stop obsessing over this woman?"

"I'm not going to get into any detail, but just so you know, she called me after 5 am, crying and begged me to help her. I drove to her apartment and brought her here with her daughters. She has nobody besides me and I promised to be there for her."

Kristen was boiling mad. She couldn't say she had fallen in love with Lindsey, they just started dating really, but what got her so angry, was that she was over twenty years younger than his ex, who did not even remember him and he still chose the other woman. "Are you absolutely sure you are not getting on that plane with me?"

"Yes. I'll call you when I get back, I don't know when that will be though."

"Where's my ticket?"

"It's in my suitcase." Lindsey replied, already falling back asleep, especially now she quietened down, searching through his things.

Kristen put the plane ticket into her passport and asked him again. "I'm leaving on my own?"

"Yes, Kristen."

"Well, then don't bother calling me when you return to California."

Lindsey heard the door slam and he just rolled over and drifted off for another hour or so. When he woke up again, he took a much needed shower, put on the same clothes he threw on the floor, once he returned from Stevie's room, but then decided to change into clean ones and that may have had something to do with seeing Stevie soon.

Stevie had ordered room service and breakfast was just brought for the girls, when she heard knocking again and when she opened the door, she found Lindsey standing in the hallway. She smiled and showed him to come in.

"So you came..."

"I said I would, didn't I?"

"You've already done so much for me, for us, Linds, I can't ask for more." He froze hearing her call him that and he was sure she didn't realize it. "What's wrong?"

"You... I... nothing." He thought it would be for the best to keep it to himself, but so he didn't seem weird... "I just thought you look beautiful."

"Oh..." Stevie looked down at the floor, smiling shyly. "Thank you." She didn't dwell on it, unsure how to go on either. "Um... do you want something to eat? I'm sure the girls won't eat everything."

"Don't worry about me. Although, if there are leftovers, I'll attend to them." Lindsey said, taking a seat in the living area. "My girlfriend left behind a cup of coffee for me, I'm alright for the moment."

"A girlfriend? You didn't mention you had one." Stevie felt somewhat disappointed, as she sat down next to him.

"It didn't come up." He shrugged, clasping his hands as he leaned forward. "Not that we are that serious. We were supposed to fly back home today, but I said I was going to stay, because I wanted to be by your side. She got angry over nothing and stormed out, leaving today by herself."

"Lindsey, no... You got into an argument with her over me?"

"No. Well, yes... but don't worry. You are a lot more important to me than she has ever or could ever be." He admitted, reaching for her hand.

"I am so thankful for you, but you do realize that... I may not be able to give anything to you in return?"

"Oh my God, Stevie! I'm not expecting anything from you." He shook his head, emphasizing. "I'm helping you because, even though you don't really know me, I know you. I know what a truly remarkable woman you are and to me you're still my closest dearest friend. I don't imagine this will end up in... I don't know, in whatever. I'm just trying to be here for you, to get you away from that asshole and get you back to your life, to your friends and family."

She managed to relax a little, as she mindlessly played with his fingers. "How do I do that? Return to my family?"

"For starters, you get on a plane. We can come back together to California and you can stay with me for a few days or we can fly straight to Phoenix, to where your parents live. It's up to you."

"God..." She sighed, running a hand through her hair, biting her lip, which he found extremely sexy, silently praying for her to stop. "This is all so overwhelming, I guess... I would like to first get used to the different environment, to... to everything really. If it's okay, I'd like to go with you?"

"Of course it's okay, Steph. Besides, I have so much more stuff to show you than just those three pictures! There's our music!"

Stevie smiled wider now, she was excited about it, although she had no idea how they sounded or anything, but she wanted to find out. Her doctor also told her that hearing stories, watching family tapes, looking through photographs, listening to a song that held a special meaning could help her. And she believed it might, just that David kept everything hidden from her, so she figured it might be why her memory hadn't improved at all.

"That's settled then. Oh, but your girlfriend? I can't imagine she will be a big fan of this?"

"Actually..." Lindsey trailed off, shrugging. "She told me not to bother contacting her."

"Well, that sucks." Stevie laughed awkwardly, but he waved it off.

"Not really."

They stayed together, just talking for hours, until they had to leave the hotel for the following flight after the one Kristen had a ticket for. It was the first time Aria and Mabel were going to be on a plane, so they were both scared and excited, as Lindsey was telling them how it was nothing to worry about at all, while they waited for the time of boarding. Stevie returned to the three after having to go to the toilet and she watched them from some distance, a smile across her lips. She could never say Dave was a bad father, but something about Lindsey and her children sparked a warm feeling in her heart.

"Are you nervous?" Lindsey whispered to Stevie, while the twins introduced themselves to a boy around the same age, waiting for the flight as well with his parents.

"No. We went on vacation several times with David. I don't find flying to be stressful at all."

"You never did. Christine is a whole different matter though."

"Christine?"

"Christine McVie." Lindsey added. "She was in the same band with us."

"Oh... Were we friends?"

"The best of! When times were rough, you and Chris used to share a condo, where you would lock yourselves up away from me and John, her husband, ex, the bassist in Fleetwood Mac. Either he or I would get so out of hand, we'd come banging on the door, screaming to let us in, but you supported each other, sticking together, never actually letting us in. She also has called me very creative names and slapped me across the face several times on your behalf."

Stevie covered her mouth with a hand, then started laughing. "I love her!"

"She's pretty amazing." Lindsey nodded.

"But... Was our relationship really that bad?"

He sighed. "It wasn't good. I mean... there was never a time we didn't love each other, but well... I was very jealous, I thought I owned you and you needed your freedom, maybe a little too much. We fought a lot, but we were also very passionate about each other, so like I said, no matter what state our relationship was in, we would always end up together in an intimate way... Boyfriends, girlfriends or not."

"Can I ask?"

"Sure."

"Do you still love me?"

Lindsey had no idea what to say, he opened his mouth, unable to formulate a coherent sentence, but then a boarding call was made and he exhaled deeply, when Stevie thankfully let it go, even if for the time being.

Once on the plane, Aria and Mabel sat together, Lindsey and Stevie behind them. Surprisingly, the twins weren't as nervous as Stevie thought they would be, already holding hands, with the belts fastened, awaiting the take off.

Stevie sat by the window, looking out through it, as she felt Lindsey lacing his fingers through hers and she gave his hand a squeeze. The plain was up in the air, on the way to Los Angeles, as Stevie lay her head on Lindsey's shoulder and sighed, feeling content.

This felt right.
