《Princess Of The Underworld》18| First Date In Forever

"Tell me something about yourself," Ben said as we walked across a wooden bridge to get to the mysterious location our date would take place.
"You gotta be more specific." I told him as I stopped to look over the top railing, he walked up next to me.
He thought for a second, "Like you're middle name?"
I raised an eyebrow at him, but answered, "It's Virgil."
"Hadey Virgil?" Ben tried it out on his tongue in a deep voice, causing me to chuckle, "That's...unique."
I shrugged, "It's bad, I know, that's kind of the point."
"Mine's Florian." Ben said as we continued walking across the bridge.
I glanced over my shoulder at him, "Not as predictable as the rest of you."
Ben chuckled, "Now, really. Tell me a fun fact about you."
I racked my brain for a minute, thinking, "Uh, I hate carrots."
The prince clapped his hands together, "That's something. What about carrot cake?"
I shrugged, we didn't have a lot of desserts on the Isle, "I've never had it."
Ben's steps before me stopped, and I turned around to see him staring at me, shocked, "How have you never had carrot cake?" He asked, causing me to roll my eyes, "Ok, next date, we are getting you carrot cake."
"Oh, so there's going to be a next date?" I teased, though I kind of wanted the answer. This wasn't too bad, I might not be opposed to going on another one in the future if I had to.
Ben blushed, running his fingers through his brown locks, "What can I say? I'm optimistic."
I hummed, reaching the end of the bridge only for Ben to grab my hand, stopping me from going any further.
"Wait." He called, "Close your eyes."
I crossed my arms, "What? Why?"
"It's a surprise!" He whined, sticking out his bottom lip like Dude when he wanted food, "Please?"
A sigh left my mouth as I obeyed, closing my eyes, "Fine."
I felt Ben place his hands on my shoulder as he lead me around, "Alright, just one more step. And now...open."
My eyes opened to see a small picnic set up on a old gazebo surrounded by a lake, it was beautiful.
"Well," Ben chimed in from behind me, his hands still on my shoulders, "What do you think?"

My eyes scanned across the food laid out, "I think that it's time to eat."
After Ben and I had made our way down and onto a little blue blanket, I had already eaten half of a piece of bread filled with jam.
"Is this your first time?" Ben asked from across me, and I swallowed the piece of food I was chewing.
"Dating isn't really a thing back home, but I did have this on-and-off thing with one of Gaston's sons."
Ben's eyes widened and he scoffed playfully, "Wait. You dated one of Gaston's kids?"
I smirked, nodding, "Yeah. But don't worry Pretty Boy, there wasn't a lot of there, there."
Ben's eyes seemed to sparkle as he looked at me, "I meant, if this was your first jelly donut, but the more you know."
I wiped my mouth, "Is it obvious?"
Ben looked at me, leaning forward and wiping something off the bottom of my lip, his hand lingered for a second before he pulled back, "Not anymore."
I sat up, leaning on my arm for support, "So, what about you? Tell me something interesting."
He chuckled, "There's not much, all very predictable like you said."
I rolled my eyes, "Except, Florian."
"I'm sixteen, an only child, and I've lived in one place my whole life."
I nodded my head, "Me too, except I'm seventeen."
Ben smiled, "I don't turn seventeen for five months, but besides that I guess we're not so different after all."
"Trust me, we are." I said, mostly to myself before looking up at him, "And now you're gonna be king."
His smile faded a little, "A crown doesn't make you king."
I bit my lip, "Well..."
Ben looked at me, almost like he was trying to find the right words, "Your dad is ruler of the underworld and I've got the poster-parents of goodness. But we're not automatically like them, we get to choose who we want to be."
Did we really though? He, and everyone here in Auradon might, but the gang and I, we basically had our whole lives set up for us.
Ben must have noticed my silence as he leaned closer to me, "And right now, I can see in your eyes that you're not like your dad. You're not evil."
But wasn't I?

He then stood up, "How about we go for a swim?" I looked over at the lake warily before shaking my head.
"I think I'm good."
"Oh come on." Ben tried to convince me, but I wasn't giving in.
"No, really. I think I will stay here and try a strawberry. This looks pretty good." I bit into the fruit and the juicy taste instantly exploded into my mouth. It was great!
Ben laughed, "Okay, save some for me though." I nodded as I continued eating, stopping a few seconds later.
I then stood up, wiping my hands on my dress and walking over to the table, where I could see Ben on a cliff in swim trunks.
"Hey," I called out to him, "Are those little beasts on your shorts?"
Ben blushed before roaring like an animal and diving into the water, creating a splash. I only rolled my eyes as I looked back out at the water.
I had kind of gotten used to Ben, he didn't bother me that much anymore, now he seemed almost...sweet. But that would all change when we got the wand and took over the world.
Ben was nothing to me, he was just a part of the plan. He was a pawn.
So why was it so hard telling myself that?
After a few minutes of silence I glanced over to where Ben had dived in, though I didn't see him there.
"Ben?" I called for him, not getting an answer, "Ben?"
I looked down at the water he had jumped into moments before, "Oh, god." I muttered to myself as I debated my next move.
My eyes flicked over to the water, "Oh, I'm so going to regret this." I told myself before stepping down into the water.
It felt weird, like I was being pulled under by something cold and slippery. Soon I had to stand on the points of my shoes to keep my head above water.
"Be-" I lost my footing and was submerged underwater. I screamed out, only causing me to suck in a bunch of salty water.
Then two arms pulled me up and suddenly, I was out of the water. I looked to see that Ben was carrying me back to land, at least he was alive
"You can't swim?" Ben exclaimed as he set me down on the stone, "You live on an island!"
I rolled my eyes, putting my arms around myself to keep warm, after being in the water the air felt colder, "Yeah, surrounded by a magical dome! And they don't exactly have swimming practice every Thursday!"
"Yet, you still tried to save me?" Ben asked, mostly to himself.
I nodded, "Yeah, I guess. And what did I get in thanks? Soaking wet!"
He then held up a glowing stone, "And this fancy rock. Make a wish and throw it back. It's yours."
I took the rock from, him carefully, my face softening. I looked at the stone, I knew what I was supposed to wish for.
I placed the rock back in his hand, "I don't believe in wishes." I then turned away from him, looking out to the lake. Then I felt something warm being placed over my shoulders.
I was now wearing Ben's tourney jacket, he then sat next to me, drying himself off with a towel.
It was quiet for a few minutes, playing with a strand of my hair, before Ben spoke up, "Hadey," I raised am eyebrow at him, "I told you I love you. But what about you? Do you love me?"
My eyes trailed down to my hands as I fiddled with them, Ben took my silence as an answer and looked out at the lake for a minute, before moving to stand up.
"What does it feel like?" I asked under my breath, but Ben must have heard me as he sat back down, a curious look on his face.
"What?"
I finally looked up at him, "What does love feel like?"
He thought for a minute, before chuckling lightly, "It makes you happy, really, really happy. You feel like you can be yourself around that person. And just at the mention of their name you break into a smile." His eyes met mine, "And....when you're with them you feel warm, and safe, and good."
I looked down at my wet shoes, "That sounds...nice." And it did, and I think I kind of wanted it.
I then felt a warm hand push my chin up, and I found myself face to face with Ben, "It is."

The Patchwork Realms
Athos is a good dog. He likes frisbee, bacon, and his family (SmolFriend, Mom, and Dad). He's not so keen on falling through an interdimensional portal to a fantasy world where floating boxes tell you that you've just been given status as the 'Supreme Exemplar' of your species, a powerful package of abilities that includes human-level intelligence. Sure, being smart is nice but less so when it comes with the need to survive in a land made from bits of different dimensions stitched together like patches in a quilt. A thousand species, a thousand lands, sorcery and super science rubbing elbows, wars and intrigue everywhere...it's exhausting for a good dog who just wants to go home! Note that this is a work in progress with lots of fiddly numbers so I will occasionally need to go back and fix errors, and this might affect events of earlier chapters. I'll try to keep this to a minimum and will post a note whenever it happens. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

This story is a tale classic in its tragedy, about the foibles of Man and how he destroys the things he loves, all to prove himself superior over the Universe. In a quest to defeat Hilter during Wold War II, Winston Churchill and Franklin Deleanor Roosevelt barter with a race of serpents who come from outer space. There are a few inconveniences for the leaders of the West when dealing with these creatures. For one, they can't even talk to them, for the aliens 'speak' by manipulating light.
