《Princess Of The Underworld》13| Just Add Magic

I stood in the kitchen with the rest of the gang, we were making the love spell for Ben.
My arms were hurting from mixing all the ingredients in the bowl as I turned towards Mal where she read the recipe, "Alright, we still need one human tear and I never cry."
"Let's just chop up some onions." Carlos suggested throwing an onion in the air, Mal shook her head.
"No! It says that we need one tear of human sadness. And this love potion gets the best reviews, so we have to follow it exactly."
I put the bowl down, ceasing my stirring momentarily as I leaned over Mal to see the book.
Jay shrugged from where he sat on the counter, "A tear's a tear."
Evie shook her head, passing a bag of dragon scales we had got from the Potions classroom over Mal, "No it's not Jay, they both have antibodies and enzymes, but an emotional tear has more protein-based hormones then a reflex tear." We all stared at her, awestruck at what she just said. Mal almost dropped her cup of ingredients.
I turned to face Carlos who was still holding the onion, "So no onions, Car."
The door then was pushed open, and I quickly dropped a towel on the open spell-book, hiding it from view just as Lonnie came in.
"There you are Mal, I've been looking for you! You know, all the girls want you to do their hair!" The pajama wearing girl stopped when she noticed us all standing around the bowl, she chuckled, "Midnight snack, huh? What you making?"
Mal looked around at us, trying to act normal, "Just some cookies."
We all watched in horror as Lonnie peered into the bowl, scooping up some of the concoction onto her finger and into her mouth.

"No, no, no, no, no!"
"Wait, stop!"
"Lonnie!"
Even Dude whimpered from next to Carlos, almost like he knew what was happening.
"What?" Lonnie asked, licking her lips, "I'm not gonna double dip."
I looked at the girl warily, even though we were missing the last ingredient we still didn't know what the spell could do.
"Feel anything?" Evie asked quickly as I leaned back slightly, afraid Lonnie was gonna blow.
Mal nodded at the others girl's question, "Yeah, like maybe it might be missing something?" She joked, causing me to elbow her side.
Jay then slowly approached Lonnie, smoothing his hair back, trying to see if the spell worked, "Hey, there."
Lonnie scrunched her face at him, almost like he was some kind of annoying animal, before looking over at Mal, "Could use some chips."
Jay frowned, upset Lonnie wasn't drooling over him.
Meanwhile I sighed in relief as Evie and Mal leaned against each other.
"And, what are those exactly?" I asked, looking up at the Auradon girl who was holding a bowl of something she had got from the refrigerator.
"Chocolate chips," She said as if that was obvious, setting them on the counter, "The most important food group."
I carefully took one from the bowl, sniffing it before putting it in my mouth. I chewed slowly, surprised that it tasted sweet and almost warm.
Lonnie must have seen my surprised face as she looked at me curiously, "Wait, didn't your moms ever make like, chocolate chip cookies?" She then put some in the batter and I thought back to the Isle, we never made cookies, much less with chocolate chips.
She continued, "Like, when you're feeling sad, and they're fresh from the oven, with a big old glass of milk, and she just makes you laugh and puts everything into perspective and-" She looked up, eyes scanning over our somewhat sad and confused features, "Why are you all looking at me like that?"

I looked around at the others, before locking eyes with Lonnie, "I guess, it's just kind of an Auradon thing."
"Yeah, maybe...I thought even villains loved their kids." I looked down, suddenly very interested in the metal counter. I knew that mom cared about me in her own way, but now I was realizing maybe she didn't care as much as I thought.
"Oh," Lonnie breathed out, looking at us, "How awful." She placed her hand on mind, causing me to look down at it, then up at her face. Wait. Was she-
Mal must have noticed to because she quickly reached over me and wiped the tear from Lonnie's face, throwing it into the bowl, "Well, big bummer, but we have to get these cookies in the oven."
I nodded, standing up with just enough time to slide the book over to
Evie, who slipped it into her pocket, before Lonnie could see it.
As Mal put the batter in the oven, I led Lonnie over to the door, "Hey, thanks for stopping by. It was great to see you. Now, go get some rest. Bitter dreams!" I pushed her out the door before leaning against in, taking in a deep breath.
I looked at the other four, "That was too close."

Letters from a Dying World
Times historic are often penned after the fact in the lifeblood of the pitiful, forgotten masses. That roiling, uncountable crush of humanity, they who held the pikes and they who threw down the tyrants. Their veins opened by gazes academic, sharp and cruel, and pecked away at with quills, written out of their own story. The Second Dark Crusade was a time of such poignancy. A time when the light of man waned and flickered, choking in the acrid smoke of its own inadequacy. As befitting of such an age it has been covered more than a capital whore, and so I attempt not to tell that story again. That story of dull, unfeeling analysis. Neither here will you find the browbeating, propagandistic screeds so common in the hands of men, the light of youth still burning behind their eyes. Nay, here I shall attempt to cover fresh ground, not tread on the grave dirt of long dead authors. Here I shall attempt to tell the story of the small lives caught, unbeknownst to them, in the great and torrential downpour that we now call history. Here lies the true story of The Second Crusade. - Loremaster Ip'Qal
