✞︎ the six of them ate a very bountiful dinner. y/n and luca were very cheerful and giddy, but ike and mysta were very nervous and anxious.
vox and shu on the other hand tried their best to keep the two sunshines safe and intact.
"we're here," y/n announced after they came back in front of the mansion.
"now, i really like how we had to do this at night for the thrill." vox said.
"we really had to do it at night. the piano starts playing at 8 pm." ike segway'ed.
the mansion seemed creepier compared to the daylight. but they all just swallowed their fear and followed y/n inside.
"shu, the book?"
"oh right. here."
"thank you." y/n mumbled and took a notepad and a pen out of her pocket.
• mrs. nuguya
• shrine maiden
"shu, you said you were a sorcerer. have you made a magic circle before?" y/n asked while sitting on the floor and scribbling on her notepad.
"yes. but they're not connected to these kinds of sorts." shu said, talking about interfering with spirits.
"i see." y/n mumbled and stood up with the book in her hand.
"your first assignment after this case is this." y/n said and showed everyone the scribble on the notepad.
"you have to learn how to make talismans on your own."
learn how to make talismans for the ritual
deadline: up until next week
1. take any piece of paper as small as a handy notepad
2. follow the scribble pattern in the book
3. draw without missing a detail
4. submit to the club president!
"i can't make one for everyone all the time." y/n continued before slapping the talismans she made on everyone's foreheads. "not that i mind."
"do you really have to slap it on our foreheads?" mysta sulked.
y/n giggled. "this talisman's scribble will help us in activating the ritual. after we activate it, we can all use our charms freely. yet, because of the ritual, we can only use the charms once every 24 hours. same goes for using the ritual itself."
everyone nodded in understanding.
"hold each other's hand."
"no pang this time?" luca asked.
"no pang. i promise."
"how about your nose? will your nose bleed again?" ike asked as well.
"it won't. rest assured."
"how do we stop the ritual? like, how do we return back to normal?" vox asked too.
"once the ritual is running, the talismans on your foreheads will be stuck in there. it won't be blown by the wind or whatsoever." y/n informed the five. "so to be able to stop the ritual from running after we've performed the exorcism, we have to burn it with fire."
the boys just mumbled an ooohh. the fascinated looks on their faces really amused y/n to the core.
they all started holding each other's hands, making a circle. y/n then closed her eyes and started chanting a few words no one could understand.
the book in the middle started glowing before a magic circle appeared below the six of them. they all looked at each other, and their bodies were glowing in different colors.
y/n was surrounded by black and white smoke. vox too, is surrounded by red smoke, while the others had more like an aura with their specific color. orange, yellow, purple, blue.
the magic circle slowly disappeared, and so did the lights from their bodies.

"let's do our best." y/n said, earning a dedicated nod from everyone.
"there's someone walking upstairs." mysta suddenly spoke up. "the steps were light. it's a woman, heading to the piano's way."
"mysta..." they all mumbled. they rarely saw mysta being serious.
"that's hot, son." vox said with his thumb up.
everyone was frozen when they heard a key from the piano. to be followed by another and another until it made up a very soothing yet sad melody.
"i'll lead the way." vox volunteered and walked upstairs first. y/n followed and so did the rest. shu made sure to carry the book with him as well.
they were all silenced by what they saw. it was a ghost, playing the piano under the moonlight, with tears trickling down her cheeks.
"madame." y/n gently called.
the lady flinched. her eyes automatically widened upon seeing mortals who could also see her too.
"no! wait, please don't go!" y/n immediately said.
"we're here to help," she added and cautiously took a step closer.
"my name is y/n, mrs. nuguya." y/n introduced. "is there any way we could help?"
"help..." the lady whispered. "yes... help... my husband, i..."
the lady stood up, but she immediately fell on the floor. the boys went to their aid, surrounding them.
"my house doesn't look as good as it was... my husband is nowhere to be found too." mrs. nuguya cried. "please help me, i'll pay you any amount you'd like... please find my husband and tell him to come back..."
"mrs. nuguya..." y/n whispered.
ike placed his hand on top of mrs. nuguya's head, his palm glowing blue for a short while.
"i'm afraid i cannot convince your husband to come back anymore..." y/n said while holding onto the spirit's arm, thank's to ike. "your husband has... remarried." she dropped the bomb.
"r-remarried..?"
"yes. it's been a while since you were away. he was lonely so he left the house and had a new family." y/n said as gently as she could. she tried, okay? she usually doesn't do the talking.
"mrs. nuguya. a madame as gorgeous as you don't fit to have tears rolling down her cheeks. but how could i blame you?" vox also said and crouched down beside you.
"it's not time for flirting." ike reminded.
y/n giggled a little bit. "mrs. nuguya, do you think we can still help in some way?"
mrs. nuguya stared at y/n.
"you're so gentle..." she whispered at the young lady.
"everyone told me to be wary of a girl named y/n and her friends. but you kids seem so nice." mrs. nuguya continued. "could you really help me?"
y/n smiled genuinely and nodded. "in exchange for your peace, we'll do our best to help you."
"y/n, a few spirits are coming this way." mysta said while staring outside the window.
his eyes were dilated and is almost similar to a fox, giving y/n a new yet strange kind of shivers.
"we'll take care of it." mysta and vox said in unison. the both of them nodded at each other before leaving the floor through the window.
"ah! those two, really..." y/n mumbled after he saw them jump out.
"i honestly just want to talk to my husband. i have a lot of questions to ask him..." mrs. nuguya confessed.
"is that it?" y/n asked.
"yes."
"are you sure?" y/n asked one more time.
"yes, i am sure."

"i'll contact him immediately." shu said while typing on his phone. "can we just suddenly let someone into the ritual?"
"yes. the consequences only happen to spirit mediums," y/n assured.
"also, y/n." mrs. nuguya called. "can you clean this house before i leave? i want to have a last look at my home before i go."
"you can even help if you'd like." ike suggested.
"really?"
"a spirit without its shell will soon reject his own body." y/n reminded. "are you sure, ike?" she asked.
the concern etched on her tone warmed ike's heart. "yes. i'll be fine."
"okay! i'll help!" mrs. nuguya beamed.
"shu." y/n called. "if mr. nuguya doesn't cooperate, tell him we'll get him ourselves." she darkly said.
shu nodded and started calling mr. nuguya with the number hiroto-san gave y/n.
"mr. nuguya... i'm sorry, but i need you back here in your old house... it's about your deceased wife... wait!"
"it seems like he won't cooperate." y/n mumbled.
"vox."
"at your service." vox said, who is already seated by the window sill, while mysta holds onto the side while he's hanging outside the window itself.
their eyes were glowing as the moonlight shines behind them. y/n has again felt shivers while staring at the two's orbs.
"can you fetch mr. nuguya for me?" she asked.
"of course, my dear."
"bring luca with you." y/n said and glanced at luca.
only to see his purple eyes glowing with his hair darkly shadowing his face.
"luca. open mr. nuguya's eyes until he's forced to see his deceased wife again."
"i understand." luca said and stood up.
y/n gave luca a newly made talisman. "slap this on mr. nuguya's forehead."
luca nodded before he and vox went out of the house through the window again.
"please don't be too harsh with him... he's really kind. but he doesn't believe in things like these unless he sees it himself." mrs. nuguya said. "i apologize on behalf of my stubborn husband."
"ah. while we're all waiting, would you like to play us a song, mrs. nuguya?" ike asked.
y/n stood up and helped the lady up as well.
"that's a good idea." shu also said.
mrs. nuguya chuckled and sat back at the piano seat. "i'm happy this piano is still fine."
mrs. nuguya started playing a few melodies. unlike what they heard before, her tunes were sweet this time. it actually reminds shu and ike of y/n.
"amélie," y/n whispered.
"yes. i'm impressed you know." mrs. nuguya said. "do you know how to play the piano?"
"oh, no. just the dodosolsollalasol." y/n humbly replied.
after a few minutes, vox and luca returned. they had to use the stairs because unlike them, mr. nuguya isn't really supernatural.
"it really is you..."
"you idiot..." mrs. nuguya mumbled and started crying.
"we'll be downstairs." y/n informed the two and left downstairs.
"y/n." mysta called. "you said we could only use the charms once. but i could keep feeling all spirits..." he mumbled.
"maybe it has something to do with you from your past." y/n answered. "but, let's not... drain you guys too much."
"it's fine. tomorrow's saturday, we don't have classes." luca said.
y/n hummed. the five of them remained all silent while waiting for mr. and mrs. nuguya to finish talking.
"everything feels so natural so far." shu suddenly spoke up.
"actually... yes. i was a bit anxious about what might happen, but i think we handled this one pretty good," ike added.
"i don't want to speak so soon, but i also believe we did a good job...?" mysta said, unsure.
vox chuckled. "i believe so too."
"yeah! y-you guys are so cool! the way shu easily handled the situation, the way ike was so calm, when mysta and vox suddenly jumped out of the window, and so did luca!" y/n started blabbering. "also when mysta was hanging outside the window because vox took the window sill! and...!"
y/n continued chattering, telling how much she was amused and fascinated by the boys.
the five, on the other hand, couldn't help but think of y/n as a marshmallow bouncing in front of them out of excitement.
"you're amazing too." vox said while pulling y/n's cheek.
"yes! you handled us so well," luca added.
"with you around, we were assured and relieved." ike also said.
"ah. i think they're done." shu called them out when they saw mr. nuguya walking down the stairs with mrs. nuguya following them.
"should we get started with mrs. nuguya's last request?" y/n chirped.

✞︎ "good morning, mrs. kaneshiro." vox greeted the lovely lady who opened the gate for him.
"oh my, vox!" luca's mother beamed in surprise. "luca! your friend is here to pick you up now!"
"would you like to come inside?"
"aaah, i wouldn't be a bother. i'm just here to pick luca up." vox humbled himself.
"poooog! bye mom! pog you!" luca said to his mom and planted a kiss on her head before leaving the gate.
"take care, you two!"
"let's get mysta next."
the two of them rode the train to the station near mysta's house. mysta's house is also blocks away from shu's and ike's.
they talked about yesterday night and the successful first case of the new occult club. they never knew it would be that fun.
"good morning, auntie!"
"mysta! your friends are here! quickly! you're so slow."
"got it, mom!" mysta exclaimed. "hey guys. morning."
"good morning, son." vox greeted.
"mysta don't stray too far okay?! is your life360 turned on? do you have money in you? be home before curfew!"
"i-i got it mom..."
the three of them left for shu's house. mysta sighed while vox and luca just snickered at him.
"shu! we're here!"
"ah— ONII-CHAN!!! YOUR FRIENDS ARE HERE!!!"
"don't shout! nee-san will scold you!" shu said and immediately covered his younger sister's mouth. "g-good morning, guys."
"good morning, brother. good morning, mini shu." vox greeted.
"good morning, mister. good morning, brothers. bye, onii-chan." the child said and ran back inside the house.
"m-mister... haha..." vox mumbled with a broken heart while the three laughed at him.
"last is ike's place." shu said. "he lives alone right?"
"why ask?" vox immediately asked, making them roll their eyes.
unlike them, ike is living in an apartment. they all climbed up the second floor before knocking at ike's unit.
"ike?" vox opened the surprisingly unlocked door.
ike was staring at them with wide eyes. he was sitting on the floor with an open book in front of him.
and a portal on top of the book too.
"oi?! what is that?!"
"ike?!! what are you doing?!"
"we can go back now?!"
"what the f***?!!"
"no..." ike mumbled. "you guys..." ike sighed.
ike closed the book, causing the portal to disappear.
"i can't make a portal from present to past, remember? i can only make a portal from future to present and vice versa." ike said and stood up.
"you're trying to go back to the future?"
"yeah. but i was shocked to see you guys here." ike said and fixed his glasses. "isn't the meet-up supposed to be like 10?"
"it is 10." luca said, making them all glance at the wall clock.
it really is 10 in the morning.
"shit... sorry," ike mumbled.
"well, if we're gonna hang out, why not in the future?" vox said with a grin.
"oooh, that's not a bad idea." shu said.
"aren't you afraid to be out of place there?" mysta said while nudging vox.
"we will leave you here if you dare piss me off, mysta." vox threatened.
ike opened his book again, revealing the portal. "come on." he said and hopped in first.
"WEEEEE—" luca followed. shu laughed and also followed, as well as mysta and lastly vox, before the demon took the book with them.
the portal opened in a dark alley.
"wow... it's my first time in the future." luca mumbled. "so... it's all trash?"
"idiot. we're in an alley." mysta said while the others were snickering.
"you'd be surprised to see the outside, luca." ike said. "go, but don't stray away from us."
"WEEEEEE!!" luca ran to the light and left the alley.
"wow..."
"technology is really sick here." ike said.
"ayo?? are those floating cars?!" shu exclaimed.
"what the f***..." mysta also mumbled in awe.
"vox, are you okay?" ike asked when he saw the grandpa's eyes rolling in dizziness.
"i-i'm fine, i think..."
"no matter how much this place looks exciting and techy, your fun is oppressed here." ike said and started walking, the four following him.
"why?" luca asked.
"to ensure the mental state of the humans." ike answered. "don't worry, someone has been taking care of the entertainment stuff here. i think it's all good as long as he shares his fun."
"do you really have to specify the 'human' word?" mysta asked.
ike chuckled. "yes. because the future isn't led by humans but robots."
"really?!" mysta, shu, and luca exclaimed.
"really." ike said. "looking at your reactions are quite refreshing."
"i want to barf..." vox whispered.
"the stage isn't that far." ike said. "but that's weird... i don't hear any music. he usually plays at this time of the day."
"stage? you're acquainted with a dj or something?" mysta asked.
"wow, you immediately got that right? how surprising." the novelist joked, but mysta took it personally.
"yes, i have a student here who is now an aspiring disk jockey." ike answered.
but they were all paused when they saw red robots abolishing and removing the stage equipment.
"maybe the party is done..?" ike mumbled. "excuse me, sir?"
"yes?" the robot replied. and its tone made the four boomers go ooohhh.
"was the party done?" ike asked.
"no. there were no parties." the robot said. "looking at the schedule, you must be here for the young dj, yugo asuma. but according to article 277 of the android regime under the national protection act, the young dj has violated the rules by doing more than the expected number of entertainment. therefore, he became a target of the purge."
ike was silenced. the four worriedly glanced at their friend, waiting for him to speak up again.
"i see. thank you."
"you are most welcome, good sir."
"get ready to run," ike whispered to the four.
"upon scanning your identity, you are deemed an unknown entity... calling all legatus—!"
"run!"
the five of them started running as fast as lightning. luca and shu were laughing, while mysta was panicking so bad. vox may be a boomer, but he's a demon. he just threw the book at ike while he kept running.
"where do you guys want to go next?!" ike asked while flipping the pages.
luca glanced back, only to see a dozen robots following them. "think quick!" the retriever exclaimed.
"uhm i don't know?!" vox exclaimed. "wait! let's see your past works, ike!"
"great idea! to the archivist!" shu yelled.
"faster! my sides are dying!" mysta cried.
ike flipped another page before throwing the book far away, revealing a portal. the five of them jumped in, with mysta going in lastly. he took the book as well before the robots could follow him.
"i hope that won't have a butterfly effect in the present," ike said and left the portal, landing in a quiet library.
"the archivist is missing." shu said, reading the note by the table.
"aww..." luca mumbled.
"well... that means we have the library for ourselves right?" vox said.
"yeah." ike mumbled.
"aww. you must be worried about the young dj, huh?" mysta asked. "don't worry, i don't think they killed him or anything. maybe they took him on a vacation elsewhere."
"yeah... maybe you're right."
"oh!" luca exclaimed. "look! it's a book about exorcism too!"
"oooh let us see. maybe we can help y/n with that." shu said and peeked over luca's shoulder.
ike glanced at his book as it opened and flipped its pages itself.
"YO, GUYS! y/n sent us her very first message at discord!" vox happily said with his phone in his hands.

Apex Predator
Earth is a fairly small place, but it's all Bath has. It's the only home he's ever known for all of his 500-or-so-million years of life. One day, Bath realized his treasured Earth was being drawn into the next mass extinction ahead of schedule. So, fascinated by the humans and their quick rise to power (after all, setting off a mass extinction is a pretty sizable achievement), what's a nearly all-powerful, somewhat bored, morally ambiguous, savagely violent, shapeshifting alien entity to do other than assume the form of a human and do some front-line investigating? Little did Bath know he would soon stumble upon a mysterious human organization with a gate leading to planets eons away. And that's just the beginning... A story with aliens, intergalactic space travel, mind powers, and an abundance of adventure! Author's note: ON HIATUS! Hello and thank you for reading! Constructive criticism and grammar-policing are both appreciated. Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are complete at 1271 pages! Part 7 is in progress! If you've ever read any other web serials, you might've noticed that authors get better with time (that is, their art or writing improves). Wutosama of Metaworld Chronicles noted that the first 20 chaps are always a mess. This is also the case with Apex Predator. The first two parts (ranging just under 30 chapters, or 161 pages) are absolutely subpar. While I have edited them as of 7-10-18, they require a rewrite, which is currently in the works but not complete. For a sample that gives insight into what the latter ~80% of the story's writing style is like, check out chapter 56. Vote for Apex Predator on Top Web Fiction! The Apex Predator Discord is here. Cover: original work done by me, the author, caerulex.
