《Rochester Avenue // Luke Hemmings》Chapter 21 - 'It Was A Romantic Atmosphere'

The light streaming through the thin curtains woke me, causing me to groan and rub my eyes. Keeping them closed, I felt around on my bedside table for my phone and grabbed it, unlocking it and cracking open one eye to check the time. When I saw it was half eight, I sighed to myself. It was too early to be up. I closed my eyes again; willing myself to go back to sleep, but it was no use. I was completely awake now. I sat up, putting my head in my hands before stretching and yawning. I reached over and pulled open the curtains, looking out the window, admiring my view of the grass and trees, and further away, the beach.

I pushed the duvet off me and got up, tiptoeing to my door and opening it, peering out. No one else was awake. My eyes went to Luke's door, opposite mine, and I noticed it was ajar. I grinned to myself and crept towards it, quietly opening it and peeking in. Luke was still asleep, curled up tightly with the duvet pulled right up to his chin. I smiled slightly at how adorable he looked before completely entering his room and shutting the door behind me.

I cautiously walked over and got into the other side of the bed, slipping under the duvet. Luke stayed asleep but turned over so that he was facing me, strands of blond hair hanging over his face. Without thinking, I lifted up my hand and brushed them back off his forehead, allowing me to see more of his face. As I was doing this, Luke stirred and slowly opened his eyes, blinking away the sleep. When he focused on me, he groaned slightly.

"It's too early."

"Morning to you too," I whispered with a smile.

He sighed and buried his face in the pillow, saying in a muffled voice, "Why are you awake?"

I shrugged slightly. "Sun woke me up." I shifted so I was a bit more comfortable, my head resting next to Luke's on the pillow.

"Mm." He faced me again and a grin made its way onto his face. "You look like a panda."

"What?" I wiped under my eyes and sure enough, the tips of my fingers were black. I must have forgotten to take off my makeup last night. "Ugh." I very quickly got out of bed and went into the bathroom to take my makeup off. I also tied my hair into a bun and patted my face dry before going back to Luke's bedroom and sliding under the covers again as Luke observed me with a smirk.

"Better?" I questioned, getting comfy.

"I didn't say it looked bad. I happen to think pandas are really cute."

I laughed softly and shuffled closer. "Good to know."

"Mm hm." Luke moved so that his nose was buried in my hair and his arm was wrapped around my waist, pulling me closer to him. Our legs were tangled together and I rested my forehead against his bare chest. My eyes drifted shut, but I didn't go to sleep. I was just dozing. Luke on the other hand seemed to have gone back to sleep since his breathing became slower and steadier. I turned my head slightly so that my ear was pressed against his chest, and faintly I could hear the regular beating of his heart. I sighed in contentment, almost wishing I could wake up like this everyday.

I wasn't sure how long we lay there, but after a while I could sense Luke had woken up since his heart began beating slightly faster and his fingers curled up against my back.

"Hey Luke?" I murmured, smiling slightly.

"Yeah."

"Your heart's beating kind of fast."

He laughed lightly, rolling onto his back and rubbing his eyes. "Wonder why."

I grinned and propped myself up on one elbow, yawning. "What's the time?"

"Don't know."

"Helpful. We should probably go downstairs," I mumbled, beginning to sit up. Luke however groaned and wrapped an arm round my waist, pulling me back down so that I landed half on top of him with a huff.

"Luke," I complained, but he grumbled a "Ssh" before rolling over so that I was on my back and he was hovering over me. His head dipped and his lips brushed over my collarbone, and I inhaled sharply. "Luke," I repeated, more hesitantly, feeling that he should stop but at the same time I really didn't want him to.

"I'm having a sense of déjà vu here," he murmured, his lips moving over my neck.

"Yeah," I breathed, my heart thumping louder as his lips pressed harder against my skin. "Except it's not cold and my clothes aren't getting all grassy."

"It was a romantic atmosphere," Luke whispered, his hot breath causing goose bumps all over my body. "Stars and all."

"Mm," I mumbled, my eyes fluttering shut as I felt his teeth scrape slightly against my skin, but they flew open when I realized what he was doing. "Luke!" I protested, pushing him away from me and touching my neck. "Did you just give me a hickey?"

He smirked down at me. "Maybe."

I frowned at him. "You can't do that. People will see it–" Luke cut me off by pressing his lips firmly against mine in a short kiss before mumbling, "You worry too much." Then he kissed me again, and we immediately got caught up in each other, forgetting about everyone else, hearing nothing but the sound of our breathing and the sound of our hearts pounding. We were pressed completely against each other, no space separating us. My legs were wrapped tightly around his waist, and his hands had lifted up my t-shirt, exposing my stomach. Our lips moved together furiously, and it was only as Luke's hand traced a hot line down to my hip that I realized I wasn't wearing pants, only underwear under my t-shirt.

"Cute underwear," Luke murmured, breaking away for a second to grin at me and glance down. "And it's blue."

"Well spotted."

He shook his head at me and rolled off me, getting out of bed and standing up. "We probably should head downstairs."

I shot him a look, not moving but instead burying my face into his pillow. "Oh now you want to go downstairs."

"Trust me, Noelle," Luke said, his eyes running down the length of my body. "I would much rather stay up here and have my way with you, but I don't think we have time for that."

My mouth dropped open and I felt my face go red. I didn't understand how he could be so casual saying things like that. Luke laughed slightly at my tomato of a face and said, beginning to walk out, "See you downstairs." Before he left the room, he turned his head round. "You might want to wear something underneath your shirt." Then he left.

I sighed to myself, taking a moment to collect myself before sliding out of bed and stretching. As I was doing this, the door opened slightly.

"Luke, you awake–" Michael froze when he caught sight of me, wearing only a t-shirt, which had risen up slightly from when I was stretching. We both just stood there for a moment, equally surprised, before Michael came to his senses. "Shit. Fuck. Sorry Noelle." He very quickly left the room and I heard him going downstairs.

I covered my face with my hand in embarrassment. Clearly the band had no idea about privacy, so I was going to have to start wearing more clothes to bed. I darted back into my room and pulled on some joggers as well as putting a bra on underneath my shirt. I breathed out slowly before going downstairs into the kitchen where Luke was sitting at the small table eating cereal while on his phone. Michael was rifling through the fridge, and glanced over as I entered. He blushed slightly and quickly looked away. Awkward.

"There's more cereal in the cupboard," Luke told me, not looking away from his phone.

I bit on my lip, briefly looking at Luke. "I'm just going to have coffee."

"Isn't any," Michael muttered, grabbing a yoghurt and swiftly exiting the kitchen. I watched him go, really hoping it wasn't going to stay awkward between us.

Luke also seemed to sense the tension, because he furrowed his eyebrows at me. "Any idea what's up with him?"

I opened my mouth, about to tell him what happened, but then I reconsidered, and decided that maybe it wasn't a good idea, so I just shrugged. "No."

He observed me for a moment before standing up and pushing the chair away from the table. He left his bowl on the counter and grabbed his phone, saying to me, "I'm going out. Tell Feldy I've gone for a walk or something."

"Uh, okay..." I said in slight confusion, watching Luke as he briskly began to leave before pausing and seeming to make up his mind about something. He turned back around and walked over to me, putting one hand on my waist and placing a kiss on my cheek. With that he left the house.

I smiled slightly to myself, but then looked up when I saw Calum and Ashton coming in. Calum had an amused expression on his face, which was directed at me, and I flushed.

"Morning," he said slightly suggestively, letting me know that he'd seen Luke kissing me.

"Leave her alone, Calum," Ashton said, rolling his eyes and pulling various food items out of the fridge and cupboard. "Have you had breakfast, Noelle?"

I shook my head. "No, but I'm good. Is John up?"

"Think so," Calum answered as Ashton put some toast in the toaster. "Where did Luke go?"

"Uh, not sure. He just said he was going out." I pressed my lips together but neither Calum nor Ashton seemed bothered or surprised by this. "Oh" was all Calum said and Ashton just nodded.

"So what's the plan for today?" I asked, changing the subject.

"Who knows? Some songwriting, maybe some recording if we get round to it. Got any ideas for us, song-wise?" Calum questioned, sitting down at the table as if waiting for Ashton to serve him food.

"Um, no," I said, which was a little bit of a lie. I was feeling sort of inspired by the ocean and the quiet of this town that we were in, but I was sure that the boys would come up with something better on their own. "Uh, I'm going to put on some proper clothes, and then I guess I'll be back down." I started to leave, but Ashton suddenly called me back.

"Hey Noelle? Nice hickey." Both him and Calum started laughing, and I blushed furiously before giving them both the finger and making my way quickly to my room. When I was up there and had made sure the door was closed, I put on some black jeans and a big sweater that went past my hands. My phone, which was lying on my bed, suddenly lit up, which confused me because I was sure I didn't have any cell service at all down here. But when I picked it up, I saw I had one bar, and I did an internal victory dance. Some messages were coming through, mostly from George, and I quickly opened them up before I lost the signal again.

Noelle update me have you and Luke fucked yet

Answer me shithead I need to know

I'm assuming ur too busy with Hemmings aka ur boyfriend to reply

Noelle where u at

They went on in a similar way, and I smiled slightly, beginning to type a text back.

Haven't had any service, and I'll tell u everything when I get back. Miss you xox

I hit send, but just as I did that, I lost all my service again. "You've got to be kidding me," I said loudly, groaning and chucking my phone back onto my bed, seeing the 'message failed to send' sign. I heard a creak and whipped round, seeing Michael poking his head through.

"You okay?" he asked hesitantly.

"Oh, yeah, it's just I had one bar of signal and I was trying to text my friend but then it vanished. The signal, I mean," I said slightly hurriedly, also brushing my hair with my fingers to make sure it was covering my neck. Michael's lips twitched.

"Oh." He didn't say anything for a moment, but then asked, "Mind if I come in?"

"Uh, sure." I smiled and folded my arms. There was palpable awkwardness in the room, but I felt we did need to talk.

"So, um, I'm just, I'm really sorry about walking in on you. I just thought it was Luke in there," he apologized, and I shook my head slightly at him.

"Michael, it's fine," I assured him. "It's not like I was getting changed or anything."

"Yeah, but still." Michael still looked embarrassed.

"Michael, do you remember that night I stayed at you guys' apartment and we all got drunk?" I asked, grinning slightly.

"Um, slightly. I was drunk. Why?"

"Because I remember you stripping down to your boxers." As I said this, he flushed a bit but was half-smiling.

"Oh. Yeah. I remember that." Michael cleared his throat. "So?"

"So... I've seen you with fewer clothes on. You walking in on me doesn't matter."

Michael bit his lip. "Luke will be mad."

"But it wasn't a big deal. If you really think he'll care that much–" I started, but Michael cut me off.

"He will. He got jealous when we sat next to each other on the way here, didn't he?" He raised an eyebrow. I frowned at him.

"How did you know?"

"I've known him for a long time, Noelle. I always know what's up."

"Oh." I chewed on my lower lip. "Well, maybe just don't tell him?"

Michael nodded. "Might be smart." He looked around my room. "So what are you doing up here?"

I shrugged. "Nothing at the moment."

He regarded me for a moment, and then said, "Want to help me write a song?"

I smiled. "Sure."
