《Rochester Avenue // Luke Hemmings》Chapter 15 - 'Are All Your Songs About Sex?'

Usually I love Saturdays.

They're better than Fridays, because when you wake up on Friday morning you realize you have to get through a couple of lectures before you can relax. They're better than Sundays because on a Sunday I'm just thinking about how the next day is Monday. On Saturdays, you don't have to worry about anything. But here I am, wishing it was a weekday so I could go to the studio and see Luke. I wanted to go to my internship. It wasn't as if I could just go in anyway because the boys were having the weekend off as well.

These were my first thoughts when I woke up at ten o'clock on Saturday morning. I really, really wanted to text Luke and ask to see him but at the same time I was such a coward and didn't feel as if I could exactly ask him to come over when he was who he was. I sighed and reminded myself that I would see him on Monday. Meanwhile, I needed to spend some time with my friends here since the internship had been taking up quite a lot of my life.

I felt pretty awake when I opened my eyes, which was odd. I turned over, stretching to see Jess still sound asleep. A grin made its way onto my face as I realized I could get her back for all the times she woke me up by jumping on me. Slowly I pushed the duvet off me and quietly got out of bed, tiptoeing my way towards Jess. I held in my laugh as I saw her sprawled out with her mouth hanging open and hearing small snores coming from her. I took a few steps back before running forward and jumping on her shouting, "Boo!"

Her eyes snapped open and she shrieked loudly, kicking out her legs causing me to fall off. I lay on the floor; laughing so hard my stomach was beginning to hurt while Jess glared down at me.

"Oh my god," I wheezed. "You should have seen... your face." And I started laughing again.

Jess shook her head at me but I could see a small grin on her lips. "You're so annoying. You scared the living shit out of me."

"That...was...the point." I finally caught my breath and brushed the hair out my face with a smile. "Whew. Ready for breakfast?"

"No. And neither are you," she said pointedly, sitting up and putting her head in my hands. "God, I'm still so tired. Why did you have to wake me up?"

"Revenge," I said simply before standing up and pulling out some jeans and a sweater to put on. "Get dressed and let's go down to breakfast."

I stared at Jess as she dug into a big, most likely unhealthy breakfast. She glanced up at me and rolled her eyes.

"Shut up. A wake up like that deserves a breakfast like this."

"I didn't say anything," I said innocently as I began eating my only slightly smaller breakfast. Tristan slid into the seat next to Jess and smiled at her, mumbling a quick, "Morning." Seeing them together made me feel kind of jealous as they grinned at each other in a lovey-dovey way. I wrinkled my nose. I was so going to be the third wheel now, since Nathan cheated on me and I hoped would no longer be–

"Hey," a voice said softly and I tensed up. I noticed Jess did too. I looked over to my left to see Nathan sitting there. Tristan clearly didn't know about Nathan cheating on me because he gave him a friendly look and replied with, "Hey man."

"What the fuck do you think you're you doing?" I said in a low voice, and Nathan flinched. I took satisfaction in seeing his black eye and cut on his eyebrow.

"Sitting with my friend–"

I swiftly got up and took away my unfinished meal while I heard Jess telling off Tristan. I knew that Nathan was following me.

"Noelle, wait a second–"

Once I'd gotten rid of my plate, I abruptly turned around to face Nathan. "Why would I want to talk to you?"

"Will you please just listen to me for a second?" he pleaded, gently touching my shoulder. I stepped away and gave him a warning glance.

"Why?" I questioned, folding my arms and glaring at him. "Are you going to try and justify cheating on me for a whole month?"

Nathan winced. "Uh, no, I guess. You just never really gave me the chance to explain myself."

"What is there to explain?" I said indifferently.

"My reasoning for it?" Nathan tried.

"You got horny. I wasn't putting out enough for you. Pretty sure that's all there is to it."

"No, it's not," he said in a low voice. "I thought you didn't love me. I thought you didn't feel the same way."

"So? Why is that a good reason–"

"Just tell me, Noelle. Did you love me?" he asked, looking intently into my eyes. I sighed loudly. I was going to have to tell him the truth, and if it hurt him...well, I didn't particularly care.

"No, okay? I didn't... I didn't love you. And I doubted you loved me because if you did you wouldn't have cheated on me. For a month," I emphasized.

"People do stupid shit when they think they're losing the ones they love," Nathan said, taking a step closer to me. I took a step back.

"You weren't losing me, Nathan. And besides, this has nothing to do with the fact you cheated. I really, really don't want to talk to you about this, so I'm going to leave and you are not going to follow me," I said bitingly. I turned away but he spoke again.

"I've seen the pictures. Of you and... Luke."

I slowly turned to face him and raised an eyebrow. I couldn't care less about what he thought of Luke and me. "So?"

He gave me a calculated look. "You still trying to tell me you didn't cheat as well?"

I clenched my jaw. He was still seriously accusing me of cheating? "I have never, ever cheated on you."

Nathan pressed his lips together. "I don't believe you. I know you weren't staying at a 'friend's' that night. You went to his apartment. You really think I don't realize what happened?"

I was so close to losing my shit. "Nothing happened because, believe it or not, I fucking respected you and wouldn't have cheated, unlike you. And so what if I did? It's not your place to tell me off for it."

"I would just like for you to tell me the truth," he said calmly and I let out a sarcastic laugh.

"What? Like you did?" When he didn't reply I spoke again in an almost threatening voice. "Tell me this, Nathan. Were you going to tell me? Break up with me for her? Or were you just going to keep on cheating and hope that I wouldn't find out?" He still remained quiet, and I shook my head in a pitying way. "Stay the fuck out of my life, Nathan." Then I spun around and walked away.

The rest of the day went by agonizingly slowly as I did some work and spent time with George listening to him go on about Ross. Apparently things were going very well between them, and at this I asked, "So why haven't we met him yet?"

"There just, you know, hasn't been time. You will soon," he assured me but I didn't believe him.

It reached the evening and Jess and I were preparing to head to a frat party, and as I finished straightening my usually curly hair I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I took it out and saw a message from Luke.

Come to the UCLA entrance x

I frowned and texted him back.

Why? I was just about to go to a party

Wouldn't you rather hang out with me? :-)

I laughed softly and Jess glanced over at me.

"What's so funny?" She wiggled her eyebrows.

"Uh, Luke wants to hang out but I'll tell him no–"

"What?" she said loudly. "Don't tell him no! Seeing him would be way better than a stupid frat party. Oh my god, don't tell George, he'll want to come with you."

"But... I'm coming with you to the party," I argued.

"I'm pretty sure I can go to a party without you. I mean, I love you and everything but I think I'll survive. Just tell him yes."

I rolled my eyes and tried to contain my smile as I sent a text back.

Fine, hemmings. You owe me

I locked my phone and ran my fingers through my hair. "I can just go like this, right?" I was wearing black ripped jeans with a white cropped top and my black leather jacket.

"Yeah. You look hot. Now go if he's already waiting," she said with a grin.

"Fine. I'll see you later."

"Luke," I hissed into the darkness, wrapping my arms around myself. "Luke, where are you?" I was at the entrance but didn't see a car or Luke himself. "Luke, I swear to god–"

"Boo."

I jumped and spun round to see Luke standing behind me with a grin on his face. "Luke! Don't fucking do that. Holy shit." I placed my hand over my chest, breathing out slowly.

"Did I scare you?" he said smugly.

I poked him hard in the chest. "Yes, of course you did."

"I'm so sorry." He so wasn't. "Come on then."

I followed him up the road a little, and said, "Whatever you've got planned better be good. I missed going to a party for this."

Luke snorted. "What, a frat party? I'm so much better."

"Whatever, Mr Cocky. Are you going to tell me where we're going or is it going to be another surprise?" I questioned with a raised eyebrow.

"Uh, I don't actually have a plan. It was a kind of spur of the moment thing."

"Well, your spur of the moment thing is costing me some drinks, so wherever we're going better be good," I informed him.

We reached his car, which he'd parked a little way away from the campus, and Luke opened the door for me. "Just get in and let's go for a drive."

I narrowed my eyes at him but sat myself in the passenger seat as he shut the door behind me. As Luke got in I put on the radio and turned it up loud as 'Uptown Funk' came on. Luke groaned.

"Are you serious? You like this song?" he asked, turning the car on and setting off.

I shrugged. "It's too catchy not to. I mean, yeah, it's overplayed but come on. You can't not sing along." I grinned at him and then began singing along very loudly. "I'm too hot! Hot damn. Call the police and the fireman..." I gave Luke a meaningful look but he shook his head at me.

"I'm not singing along to this," he said, rolling his eyes.

"You're such a killjoy." I pouted at him and he grinned.

"Whatever you say, snowflake." He reached over and swiftly changed radio stations, and a song I didn't know softly played through the speakers. "Do me a favor and grab a CD from the back."

I sighed dramatically and leaned over, searching through all the CD's until I found one with a grin. "You have your own CD?"

Luke laughed softly. "Yeah, believe it or not. Don't play it, though."

I was so going to play it. I inserted the disc and the first song came on, which was 'She Looks So Perfect'. "Oh my god, what a tune. Seriously, what a great song. I mean, this is about a girl after you guys had sex, right? She's standing there looking super sexy in your shirt and–"

"Shut it, Noh." Luke shook his head at me but there was a hint of a smile on his face. "You've already admitted that you like our music so you can't now go and make fun of it."

"Sure I can." I poked his nose, which I'd always found really cute, and then sang very loudly. "She looks so perfect standing there, in my American apparel underwear, and I know now, that I'm so down... Okay, next song." I pressed 'next' and 'Don't Stop' came on.

"Oh god," Luke groaned. "I hate this song. Please change it."

"No way. You want I'll take you there, you tell me when and where–" I snickered. "Nice. But then I, ask for your number, said you don't have a phone – she's lying, she just doesn't want to give you her number," I told him.

"You know, you don't have to comment on every line," Luke said, wrinkling his nose.

"Okay, fine. Next one is... " I waited and then heard 'Good Girls' begin to play. "Now this is a great one. She's a good girl, she's daddy's favorite, he's saved for Harvard, he knows she'll make it. Such a racy song. When you talk about how actually she's not reading books in the library but she's with her boyfriend, are they having sex? Are all of your songs about sex?"

"You really know our songs so well," he said dryly.

"How old were you when you wrote these? Seventeen?" I asked with a smirk.

"Sounds about right," Luke replied. "Okay, you can turn it off now. We're here."

"We're where?" I looked around me as Luke got out the car, and I followed suit. "Are– are we at a park?"

"Yeah," he answered as I went to stand near him. "It's really cool at night."

"It's also closed," I pointed out.

"So?"

"So... we can't get in, and even if we can, we'd get caught or something. It's not–"

"Before you say it's not a good idea, just follow me," Luke interrupted. "Also, it's a great idea. What happened to living on the edge?"

"Living on the edge does not include going to jail," I pointed out as we walked past the entrance.

"Don't be so dramatic, we're not going to go to jail. We're going into a closed park at night, not robbing a house. We'll be fine," he tried to reassure me. "What happened to the Noelle who went and got a tattoo?"

I rolled my eyes. "I think I liked you better when you didn't like me."

"What? When did I not like you?"

"Uh, when we first met," I reminded him.

Luke frowned in thought. "Oh. I didn't not like you. I just... I take a while to warm up to people. Perks of being bullied at school."

I opened my mouth to reply, but then what he had said comprehended in my mind. Luke was bullied? "Wait, bullied?"

He gave a sardonic laugh. "Yeah. I used to be kind of fat, and the kids used to make fun of my haircut. The good old days." Before I could say anything in reply, he swiftly stopped and went to stand behind me before wrapping his arms around my waist and lifting me in the direction of the fence surrounding the park.

"Luke!" I shrieked in surprise, grabbing at his arms as he laughed softly.

"Grab the top of the fence," he said, his voice slightly muffled since his face was pressed into the top of my back. "By the way, you smell good. Are you wearing perfume?"

"Stop sniffing me," I ordered. "But yes, I am. And you're going to need to lift me a little closer."

He stepped forward and I grasped the top of the metal fence. "You want me to climb over this?" I said doubtfully.

"Ideally, yeah. Try not to fall."

I snorted and pulled myself up, swinging my leg over as Luke let go of me. I swung the other leg over but suddenly lost my grip, my hands letting go of the cool metal as I tumbled to the ground.
