《Going back ✔️》Chapter 23: Sus

"We need your help."

Well, that was unexpected.

"With what?" Jax asked.

The duo shared a brief glance, "it's better if we talk about it somewhere in private."

I looked at my friends who had confused looks on their faces. Aiden looked worried- I think he recognised them to be a part of DK.

"Okay," I replied, standing up and pulling Jax to his feet, "let's go over there."

We stood by a patch of rhododendrons. The pair stood next to each other and we stood opposite.

"Why are DK following us?" Jax asked.

The boy looked surprised, "how did you know we were a part of DK?"

"Your bracelet," I jutted my chin at the silver clasp studded with sapphires and rubies with 'Devil's Knights' engraved on it, "not exactly subtle, is it?" I raised an eyebrow.

"Sam, I told you we shouldn't have worn them," the girl sighed, "now they probably think we're going to kill them."

"Aren't we?" Sam asked.

Jax and I stiffened and I felt him reach for his gun.

The girl groaned and slapped her hand against her forehead, "no, Sam, we aren't. We need their help. Why would we kill them?"

"Oh," Sam flashed us an apologetic smile, "sorry... tough week, so I'm going insane."

"What's your name?" I asked the girl.

"Aubrey," she replied, "we're getting off track here. We need your help."

"So you've said," Jax replied, "but with what?"

"To destroy the Devil Knights," Aubrey said simply.

Jax raised an eyebrow, "Excuse me?"

"Sit down and I will explain," Aubrey answered.

We obeyed. Jax began tapping the ground in a seemingly random rhythm, but he was actually communicating in a way only we knew.

Should we trust them?

I don't know... it can't hurt to listen, right?

Why would they want to help us?

Let's find out...

"Let me explain," Aubrey started, "in gangs we are made up of different parts. Top, middle, base and lower base. The 'tops' are the most snobbish and cruel. The 'lower bases' are the newbies and servants," why was she telling me this? I already knew how gangs worked so-

Oh, she doesn't know I'm in a gang. Well, let's keep it that way, I tapped out my new revelation to Jax.

"There is a leader of the entire gang, but we've never met them. We are the top of the middle and our leader is John," Aubrey continued.

At this, Jax and I tensed and I saw his hand twitch towards his gun.

"Judging by your reactions, I'm guessing you know him already. Yeah, he's a sweetheart, isn't he?" Sam said with a wry smile and humourless laugh, "anyway, the two of us left the gang- reasons for which we'd rather keep to ourselves- and we decided to come and help you and your family. Our section was charged with killing you because John seems to have some personal vendetta against you."

"That would be correct," I smiled dryly.

"So, we want to help your brothers take down Devil's Knights once and for all," Aubrey scowled darkly.

"How do we know we can trust you?" Jax asked.

"We'll give you information and you can use that," Sam replied.

I bit my lip thoughtfully, "I don't know... what do you gain from this?"

"Doesn't matter," Aubrey said in a clipped tone.

"Then how can we trust you?" I asked, "for all we know, you could stab us in the back and hand us over to John."

Aubrey shrugged, "you don't know. Just saying, if we wanted to, we could've handed you over to John by now. We'll leave you, for now. Discuss with your brothers and give your answer by the end of the week," she and Sam stood up and left.

Jax and I stood up and walked over to our friends. They were laughing and chatting.

"Hey, is everything okay?" Aiden asked as soon as we reached. For some reason, everyone raised an eyebrow and smiled at him. It was quite creepy to be honest.

"Uh fine," I replied, "just some friends of our friends who needed some help," I waved my hand.

We chatted and played until the dying sun sent bands of colour across the sky. Then we decided to go home.

After dropping Aiden off at his home, I could finally talk to Jax alone about what happened earlier.

"Do you think it's a trap?" I asked.

"It's highly likely," Jax replied, his eyes trained on the road, "but if it isn't..."

I rubbed my eyes, "it's too good of an opportunity to miss."

Jax reached over and squeezed my hand, "it'll be okay, Rainbow. I'm with you every step of the way."

"Thanks Jax," I leaned back in the seat, "God I miss Alex."

"Me too," Jax murmured, "and tomorrow's the day..."

Tomorrow marked the day Alex died exactly four years ago.

"I know," I said quietly.

"Can I crash at yours tonight and tomorrow?" Jax asked, "I don't want to spend it alone."

"You don't even have to ask Jax," I chuckled, "you could come banging on my door at 2am and I wouldn't care."

Jax laughed softly, "hey! That's my line!"

We continued the playful banter until we reached home.
