《The Nanny》Chapter 4

"Well Miss Lodge, let's have a little chat. Tell me about yourself"
"Well" she smiles "my name is Veronica Lodge. I'm 26 and —"
"Sorry to interrupt but you look so much younger than 26. I already knew that you were 26 but— I don't know"
Veronica giggles "I hear that often"
Archie smiles "please continue Miss Lodge"
"You can call me Veronica"
"Well then continue Veronica"
"My parents are both from Mexico but I was born here in Riverdale. I went to high school and college and then worked in a kindergarten for a few years before it shut down and now I'm here, looking for a new job"
"Which kindergarten did you work in? I can't remember any kindergarten that closed here in Riverdale"
"Uhm no. I was working in Greendale. I applied here in Riverdale too but I got the job in Greendale"
"Oh okay. Interesting" Archie's says. "Why do you want to work as a nanny?"
"I love kids. I have to be honest with you, I also applied for some other jobs as a kindergarten teacher but a nanny is different. You only have, in this case, two kids you have to focus on. You can goof around with them and play but also teach them stuff and show them new things. I can be part of a family and I like that"
"You mean a new family right?" Archie chuckles "you have a family"
"Of course" Veronica giggles "I'm sorry, I'm a little nervous but that's what I meant"
"No need to be nervous Miss Lodge. It's all good. Are you ready for work days that start early or end very late? I will need you on some weekends too"
"Absolutely. I'm ready whenever you need me"
"Perfect. You know you have the opportunity of moving in here. We have a guest room that could be your room form now on. It would be easier for you but that's your decision and we can talk about that another time"
"That's good to know. Can I think about that?"
"Sure" Archie smiles "like I said, we can talk about that another time"
Veronica cheeks blush lightly in embarrassment. She nervously fumbles with her fingers and tries to avoid eye contact for a second.
"Do you have any questions Veronica?" he asks.
"Uhm yeah. Can you tell me more about the kids? What are they like?"
Archie grins. "Even though they're twins they are very different. In some things they are alike though. Ella is my sweet little girl. She's very active and open to new people and things. She loves to discover and learn more about the world. So be ready for a lot of questions. She loves to ask questions. Benny is very quiet. He's a little shy and a total daddy's boy. He needs a constant feeling of safety or he gets very anxious. We go to a therapist because of that every now and then to make sure he's alright"

"How can I make him feel safe?" Veronica asks. She wants to know or better needs to know. The kids have to feel safe and comfortable around her.
"Just hold his hand. In most cases that's enough. He needs the touch of a person he trusts. When he wraps his arms around your leg he's either scared or wants to cuddle. Usually you can tell by the situation what it is. Just play with his hair then or scratch his back"
"Okay I think I can do that"
Archie smiles. "Good, that's important to me. Well like I said there are also some things they have in common. They're both very kind and smart and they love to cuddle. So be ready for a lot of love and hugs and kisses"
"I'm a huge fan of hugs" Veronica giggles.
"Perfect" Archie smiles. "More questions?"
"Uhm yeah, I have one more. You don't have to answer but what about the kids' mom"
"Well I don't know. The twins are adopted and they know they are. I have explained to them what that means a couple of times and I think they got it but they're only four so I'm not sure if they really really got it. Do you understand what I mean?"
Veronica nods as she takes a sip of her water. "Do you know anything about their biological mom or parents?"
"No" he sighs. "They were just a few days old when their mom left them in front of an orphanage. With a letter. She wrote down their names and their date of birth. She was only 16 when she had them. Their dad left. He didn't want kids. She also wrote that she didn't want to give her kids away but her parents forced her and she asked to give her kids to the most perfect and most loving family"
"Wow that's really sad. I'm sorry for the poor girl"
"Me too. If I one day have the chance to find that girl I will contact her and offer her to meet the twins. I want them to have the chance to meet their biological mom and I want her to meet her kids. I can't imagine how painful it must have been for her to give away her children. I— I could never. I'd rather die"
"It's a really sweet idea that you want her to meet the twins. It may be hard for everyone at fist but it's the right thing to do"
"I think so too" Archie smiles "My ex wife and I tried to have kids for a long time but it never worked so we went to a doctor. We found out she couldn't have kids. We were devastated but after a while decided to adopt. Ella and Ben were the first kids they showed us and we fell in love the second we saw them, at least I did. They were so sweet and tiny and perfect. They were only three months old.

When they were six months, my ex wife wanted to get a divorce. Somehow she suddenly noticed that life with kids is not what she wanted. She left me high and dry with two babies.
My parents helped me as much as they could and they still do but I'm done handing them from kindergarten to my parents to my friends to 10 different babysitters. I want them to have one person they can focus on. Especially Ben needs that and with a nanny they're home. Every time I pick them up from kindergarten they are the last, there are no other kids left. When I pick them up from my parents they are already asleep, most of the time. I mean they will probably be asleep now too when I get home but at least they lie in their own beds"
"I'm sorry about your wife, well ex-wife"
"No it's okay. Ben, Ella and I are happy. We don't need anyone who doesn't love us with all their heart. These two are perfect. You will notice that too when—"
"Daddy!" Ella yells as she runs into the house. Ben and Mary run after her.
"Daddy when will you be done?" the little girl whines as she reaches her arms out to him. He lifts her into his lap and kisses her cheek. "In a minute, sweetheart"
"Sorry I couldn't stop them" Mary breathes out as she reaches the kitchen. Ben holds Mary's hand. As he notices Veronica he holds on a little tighter to his grandma.
"It's all good mom. Actually— I want you to meet Veronica. Ella, Ben she'll be your nanny"
"Really?" Veronica asks with a smile on her face.
Archie nods before he looks down to his daughter in his lap.
"Hello" she grins. "You look pretty"
"Thank you, that's really sweet. You're pretty too. I love your dress"
"Thank you. Daddy bought it for me. Do you want to see the new swing set?" Ella gasps she turns to face Archie and places her hands on his chest. "Daddy can I show her the new swing set?"
"That's a good idea munchkin. Take Benny with you"
Ella jumps off her father's lap. She grabs Veronica's hand and pulls on it. "Come on"
Ella takes Ben's hand as well and walks outside with them.
While Ella excitedly shows Veronica the new swing set Archie built a few days ago Ben stands a few feet away from Veronica. He has his arms wrapped around himself. He seems nervous.
"Veronica can you push me" Ella asks. She sits in the swing, her legs are dangling in the air.
"In a second Ella" Veronica smiles.
She walks over to Ben and squads down to him. "Hi Benny, I'm Veronica"
"Hi" he mumbles.
"I know you need some time to trust me, before we can be friends but I'm here to protect you okay? I'm here to take care of you and—"
"Will you play with me and Ella?"
"Of course" she smiles.
Ben let's go of himself. His hands drop to his side and a little smile grows on his face before he slowly reaches for Veronica's hand. She takes it happily and squeezes it before she gets back up. "Do you promise to be my friend?"
"Oh of course sweetie" Veronica smiles. She slowly runs her thumb over his cheek before they walk to Ella. The little girl still swings her legs back and forth. "Veronica I need your help!"
"I'm here" Veronica giggles. Ben wraps his arms around one of her legs as Veronica begins to push Ella on the swings.
"I hope you did not only choose her because she's pretty" Mary laughs as she sits down across from her son.
"What? no mom" he chuckles. "I just think she'll be a great nanny. Her résumé is pretty impressive.
Compared to all the other women I interviewed today she's perfect"
"Mhm Archie just don't do anything stupid"
"I won't"
Mary laughs and looks outside the window.
"Look at this Arch" she says and points to Veronica and the twins. "Did Ben ever feel comfortable with anyone so fast?"
"No" Archie says and shakes his head. "I have no idea what Veronica did or said to make him feel safe around her already"
"She really seems to be the perfect nanny for this family"
"Told you I didn't only choose her because she's pretty"
"Just don't do anything stupid"
"No mom, I already said I won't" he chuckles "she's here for the kids, only the kids"
"Mhm" she smiles "I want to get to know her better and I'm sure your dad wants to too. So let's have a barbecue at our place tomorrow, Betty and Jug can come too"
"Good idea mom"
"Great" Mary smiles. She looks outside the window again. The little smile on her face grows. Ella has been giggling the entire time and Ben still has his arms wrapped around Veronica's leg.
