《Just Steve》S I X

Okay, deep breaths (Y/N).

Swinging the door open, you walked into the pharmacy. After doing a quick scan to make sure you didn't see anyone you knew, you made your way over to the family planning aisle.

There were a number of different tests to choose from. Not wanting to spend too much time you grabbed the first test with a brand name that you recognized and went to the checkout counter.

Placing the test in front of the cashier, you pulled out your wallet getting ready to pay. The cashier looks at you sympathetically. She could clearly tell you were upset as you nervously drummed your fingers on the counter waiting for your card to be processed.

"You can use the bathroom here if you want."

You looked up at the lady in surprise.

"What?"

"If it were me I'd want to know as fast as possible," she shrugged before continuing. "We have a bathroom in the back, feel free to use it." She pushed a key over to you along with the test.

It was a nice gesture, and it was true. You needed to know one way or the other. Why not do it here? You were just about to open your mouth to thank her when the door to the pharmacy swung open.

Standing in the doorway and walking over to you was a familiar looking brown-haired boy, a goofy smile on his face.

Crap. What the hell was he doing here? You quickly hid your hands behind your back praying that he hadn't seen the pregnancy test. Inwardly cursing your face for always giving away your emotions, you replaced your nervous expression for the best smile you could muster.

"Hey, (Y/N) right? How are you doing?"

"Hey Peter, nice to see you again," you said, keeping the smile plastered on your face. He didn't seem to be acting any different so you assumed gratefully that he hadn't seen anything.

"Yeah, you too. How've you been?"

You had really hoped he wouldn't want to do the whole small talk thing. You didn't really know each other and it was nice of him to ask, but now all you wanted was to get out of the pharmacy as fast as possible. Out of the corner of your eye you could see the lady at the register smirking slightly, clearly understanding the awkward position you were in. Well, at least your life was amusing to someone.

"I've been good. You know how it is, just classes and studying. You?"

"Yeah, same here," Peter replied, grabbing some candy from below the counter and tossing it in front of the cashier with some cash.

The two of them stood there awkwardly. You wanted to make some excuse and leave but you couldn't walk past him without revealing the pregnancy test still stashed behind your back. They had fulfilled the extent of appropriate social behavior for the situation, so there wasn't much else to say. It's not like they were friends, they had only ever said a few words to each other.

"So, are we just gonna pretend like you aren't hiding a pregnancy test behind your back?"

(Y/N) exhaled loudly, as if she had been punched in the stomach. Of course Peter had seen the test. You blushed, starting to feel embarrassed but this feeling was quickly replaced by annoyance. Even if he had seen the test he didn't have to point it out to you like that. Why couldn't he have just let you pass without them having an awkward conversation about it? Anyways, you had nothing to be ashamed of. So what, you had sex and needed a pregnancy test. You figured most girls by the time they were seniors in college had done the same thing at some point or another. Standing a little taller and glaring at him you spoke.

"Well I don't normally talk about my sex-life with complete strangers," you replied, not being able to hide the attitude in your tone. The cashier chuckled slightly, then did her best to cover it up with a cough, scurrying over to the other side of the store.

You expected Peter to be embarrassed or to back down from the conversation realizing that he had just overstepped into a very personal situation. Instead, he smirked back at you.

"Well you should have been quicker in hiding it, or at least found a better hiding place," he chuckled, grabbing the candy and opening the bag.

"That doesn't mean you had to point it out," you grumbled, watching as the boy in front of you shook the bag of skittles, hunting for a specific color and remaining completely unfazed by your sarcasm. What had happened to the nervous boy you had met at Stark Tower? This was a different Peter Parker. A confident one that acted like he knew all your secrets. But he didn't know you, he didn't know anything about you.

"Come on (Y/N), you can't take that by yourself," he said, motioning to the test before adding, "Go take it and I'll wait for you here."

You frowned, looking at him quizzically. Why did he care so much? You found it unlikely that Steve had put him up to this. Remembering the look on his face when he told you to leave, you figured Steve probably didn't mention what happened between the two of you to Peter or anyone else. For all you knew he brought home girls all the time. So, why was Peter trying to get you to take the test in front of him?

"I don't know... I think I'm just going to take it at home."

"Just go on and take it (Y/N), you know you want to," Peter gave you a pointed look, motioning to the bathroom again.

He wasn't wrong. It was killing you not knowing what the test was going to tell you. You needed to find out and you didn't want to walk all the way home before getting some answers. Turning on the spot, you sighed, heading to the bathroom at the back of the pharmacy hearing Peter call after you.

"I'll be waiting for you here!"

You rolled your eyes but kept walking, closing the door and locking it behind you. You were reading the instructions on the box telling you how to read the results, fidgeting with it nervously.

You took a few steadying breaths. Geez. It felt like you had needed a lot of those lately, but hey, it had been a stressful few weeks. You started to give yourself a little pep talk trying to keep yourself calm while taking the test.

Whatever the results say, you know you will be fine. Right? You definitely didn't want to be pregnant, but even if you were it wasn't the end of the world. It wouldn't be convenient but it's not like it was some tragedy. Babies were kinda cute. You shook your head laughing at your inner dialogue. Yea, I'm really not ready for this.

The box had said the test took a few minutes to show results so you took your time leaving the bathroom, not wanting to face Peter. After a couple minutes had passed you left the bathroom to see him waiting for you as promised. Walking over, you steeled yourself before raising the test to read the results.

Peter saw you staring at the test in your hand, waiting for you to speak but you stood there motionless.

"So, what's the verdict?" he prompted. The room seemed to be spinning as you stood there staring at the test in your hand. You reached for the counter feeling yourself sway slightly, Peter grabbing your shoulder to steady you but you couldn't even notice. The pharmacy had faded into the background so it was just you and the test. Your hand was shaking slightly, as your mind processed the little red plus symbol.

"(Y/N)? Hello?"

Peter's voice pulled you out of your trance.

"It's- It's positive," you replied breathlessly without taking your eyes off the bright red plus sign that seemed to be staring you down. You shook the test up and down half-heartedly, knowing it would not change the plus symbol to a negative symbol, but wishing it would anyway.

"You know I don't think shaking it is really going to change anything," Peter chuckled lightly. You could tell he was trying to ease the tension in the moment and get you to laugh but in the moment it just made you angry. Your life had just changed forever. None of this seemed funny to you.

"Good one, hilarious," you said flatly. For the first time his smile faltered, falling off his face and turning into an expression full of guilt.

"(Y/N) come on, I was just joking."

You weren't really upset about him making the joke, you had made the same joke to yourself in your head, but you had just found out you were pregnant and you weren't ready to be laughed at by a boy you weren't even friends with. You just wanted to be alone.

You pushed past him heading out of the pharmacy into the cool evening air. You heard Peter following closely behind but you didn't care anymore, the weight of the test results finally beginning to sink in.
