《in time ✱ j. jungkook》✱ chapter nineteen

"You coming to the basketball game tonight? I heard they're playing state champs." Nayoung says as she plops down beside me in homeroom.

I scoff, flipping the page of my book without looking back up at her. "And see sweaty boys running back and forth trying to get some ball in a hoop? I'm out."

She whined, grabbing my arm and shaking it. "Please come! Hoseok is coming tonight and I want you and him to get along better."

Oh that's right, Nayoung and Hoseok have officially begun dating.

I completely forgot about that. What a great best friend I am!

"I can get to know him better another time. Why would I want to talk to him when sweat is flying around the room?"

"Because he wants to go watch his friends." She pouts.

I sigh. "Nayoung. . . no."

"Miyoung. Yes."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"No."

"No."

"Damn it I thought that would work." She whispered under her breath. "Miyoung please come, you don't even have to stay the entire time, just a half."

I groaned, knowing full well that even if I continued to say no, Nayoung would not stop talking about it for the rest of the day.

And she knows how I get when people talk about the same topic a full day.

"Fine." I mutter out, bluntly ignoring her squeals of happiness.

"Thank you!"

I ignore her again and continue to read my book, dreading for a gym full of sweaty boys.

Of course Jungkook happened to be the friend Hoseok was talking about.

And of course Nayoung forgot to mention that part.

She knew that I wouldn't have dared set foot into the gym if I knew he was playing in the game.

"I actually hate you right now." I whisper in Nayoung's ear as we find open spots on the benches near the court.

Great. Now we have a better chance of the basketball getting thrown in our faces or their sweats coming on us.

And we can get a lovely smell of their body odor! How great!

She grins sheepishly at me while gripping Hoseok's arm. "You're the best!"

I huff out a breath and look out at the other side of the court unamused.

"Hey, this seat taken?"

I jump back startled and come face to face with Taehyung with his box-like grin on his face.

Taehyung. Haven't seen much of him in a while.

I shake my head. "No."

He takes that as a cue to sit down beside me. "I didn't expect you to be here tonight. I didn't really picture you as the type of girl that comes to school sports games."

"I'm not," I say, pointing to the two love-birds next to me. "Nayoung dragged me here to 'get to know Hoseok better.' But it seems like they've got other plans."

He laughed and said hi to the couple.

"They're cute together." He says.

I nod. "Yeah, they compliment each other well. I'm glad Nayoung's finally found someone who makes her that happy."

Nayoung's last boyfriend was a total asshole. He didn't care for Nayoung in the slightest, he was only with her for the thrill of having a girlfriend. But once he saw someone "hotter," he immediately dumped Nayoung, saying how she could never stoop up to this new girl's level and how much time he had wasted with her.

That tore Nayoung apart completely.

She spent two weeks crying in her room. It was nearly impossible to get her out of there.

She really liked the guy, and he turned around and did that? Men can be such jerks sometimes.

"What about you?" Taehyung asks.

I raise an eyebrow while facing him. "What about me?"

"Have you found someone that makes you happy?"

I was slightly taken aback by the sudden question, but decided to play it cool. "Yeah, my bed. That's all I need in life."

Taehyung chuckles. "True. Beds are always there for you, no matter what you're feeling."

"Exactly. You don't need someone who's just going to break your heart in the end when you have a bed that'll be with you till the end."

"What if that someone won't break your heart?" Taehyung asks lowly.

I scoff slightly. "Love doesn't work like that. Even if you're madly in love with someone, there's bound to be some sort of heartbreak soon. Every couple goes through that, and they need to. It shows that if they truly one love another, they could overcome the hardest of trials, even if it breaks your heart so bad."

"Wow, you seem to know a lot." Taehyung says while letting a soft chuckle escape his lips.

I shake my head. "Nah, just seen a lot of dramas."

He laughs. The buzzer rings and the teams head out of the locker rooms.

Our school's basketball team came out first, with of course Jungkook leading the team.

The crowd around us roared, clapping and whistling as the team made their way to their bench.

The other team walks in and the other side of the court hollers out.

I watch Jungkook as he gathers his team around in a circle, speaking to them attentively with sharp eyes. He looked at each of them square in the eye, as if he was daring them to look away.

Jungkook knew had to lead a team well, there was no doubt about that. He was always the team captain in everything, whether it was a game of dodgeball or one side of the class versus the other side. They always picked him.

And honestly? I don't blame them.

Jungkook had this. . . way about him, like he was born to lead.

He breaks his team, some of the guys sitting on the bench while the others head to the court and get ready in their positions.

I see Jungkook scanning the crowd when his eyes land on me. He looks at me for a bit before shooting a small smirk, looking back at the other team.

It was as if he was telling me, watch me, I'm going to win.

"Have you ever seen Jungkook play basketball before?" Taehyung asks from beside me as the buzzer starts, indicating that the game has officially begun.

I shrug. "Like a game? No. But I've played against him one-on-one before."

He nods. "He's really good. I wouldn't be surprised if he made it to the NBA someday."

I scoffed. "He's good at everything, Taehyung."

"True."

Jungkook takes the ball and starts heading for the hoop. He jumps and takes the shot, immediately getting the ball in.

Our side cheers his name. It looks like it feeds his ego, because he starts standing straight while high-fiving his team and smirking at the crowd.

Oh, he's definitely enjoying the attention.

The game goes on with Jungkook usually hogging the ball and taking the shots. I don't think the team minded though, as long as he got the ball in the hoop.

Taehyung and I talked most of the time as well. We talked about what went down with Jaeun and I the other day.

He said that he was tutoring some new boy in tenth grade while it happened but he heard about it from Jungkook.

"Yeah, Jungkook was so pissed when he was telling me." Taehyung said. "He was explaining what happened with so much anger and detail that I had to stop him before he punched a wall or something. Was it really that bad?"

I shrugged. "I mean, it was Jaeun being Jaeun. She was accusing me of having a romantic relationship with Jungkook and then wouldn't believe me and then started saying rude things. It wasn't anything I couldn't handle though, but it was really nice of Jungkook to step in and help."

"Yeah, that was nice of him." He says under his breath. "I wish I was there to help you too though, I feel bad that I wasn't able to comfort you or anything."

My heart skipped a beat. "N-No worries."

It was funny how Nayoung had intended me to come and get to know Hoseok better, but I had completely forgot about them.

They actually left during half-time, probably thinking they could sneak out unnoticed.

They were wrong.

I ended up staying the entire game with Taehyung, occasionally having small-talk.

The game was finally finished, our team beating the other by thirty-eight points. Jungkook held the trophy high in his hands while his team picked him up and threw him around.

If this isn't boosting up his ego any more than it already is. . .

"Hey Miyoung, can I talk to you about something?" Taehyung asks me, his face turning red while biting his nails.

"Sure." I say, starting to feel a little self-conscious about what he was going to say.

He takes a deep breath. "I uh, well I just wanted to—"

Before Taehyung could finish what he was saying, Jungkook came up to us, the trophy long gone from his hands.

He put his sweaty arms around the both of us. "Hey you two! Did you guys enjoy the game?"

I nodded while trying to get away from his grip. "Sure. You played very well."

Jungkook beamed at me while removing his arm. "Thanks."

"Okay, well Taehyung was about to ask me something before you rudely interrupted him, so either you leave us or we take our leave." I say.

He raised his eyebrow, also removing his shoulder from Taehyung who currently found the ground more interesting.

"I-It's okay Miyoung, I can tell you another time." Taehyung hesitates, his arms doing weird motions.

"No go ahead Taehyung, ask her." Jungkook pushes.

I glare at him. "You have no business here."

He shrugs. "I don't want to interrupt anything so just do it as if I'm not here. I wanna know what you're telling her."

"Hey you know what would be better?" I say, faking enthusiasm. "If you actually weren't here. Go away!"

"You know what?" Taehyung speaks up, earning both of our attention. "I actually gotta get going now. I'll tell you some other time. Bye guys!"

And with that, Taehyung was speed-walking out of the gym.

"Taehyung!" I yell out in hopes of him stopping, but he was already out of the gym.

I sigh, turning around to face a triumphant looking Jungkook. "Thanks Jeon."

He shrugs again. "No problem. Hey, do you maybe wanna go get some pizza with me?"

To say I was shocked would be a complete understatement. "W-What?"

Jungkook awkwardly chuckles. "Well I was just thinking that we could, uh, celebrate this win with pizza? I was gonna ask Taehyung if he wanted to come but he just ran out."

I bit my lip. "Wouldn't you much rather celebrate your win with the people you won with?"

"No." He says bluntly, catching me off guard again. "So, uh do you want to?"

After I didn't respond, Jungkook quickly retaliates. "I-I mean, you don't have to, it was just a suggestion."

I mean, I had nothing else better to do. Plus, he did just win a state championship and I sort of felt in debt to him in a way for standing up for me against Jaeun.

I nod. "Alright, let's go."

Jungkook looks shocked, his expression clearly showing that he didn't believe I would agree. "Really?"

I nod again and shrug. "I don't see why not. Let's go before it gets too late."

He beams at me, nodding his head vigorously with a big grin on his face. "Y-Yeah! Let me just go get changed real quick."

Jungkook turns around and starts heading to the locker rooms before turning back around abruptly. "Stay there, don't go anywhere."

I chuckle while nodding. He smiles at me before turning around again and dashing towards the locker room.

I sit back down on the benches to wait for him. I take out my phone and scroll through Twitter.

"Jungkook looked so good today. His game face is so hot." I hear a girl say behind me, a group of other girls giggling at her.

"Definitely."

I decide to ignore them and continue to scroll through my feed until I came to a complete halt.

"Park Miyoung is such a lucky bitch. Did you see how Jungkook was looking at her like every ten seconds during the game?" Another voice piped up.

"I thought I was the only one who noticed that!" Said another girl. "Like every shot he made he would look at her direction to see if she was looking or not."

"What if Jungkook wasn't looking at her, but at someone else generally in that area?" A desperate voice said.

"I highly doubt that, Mina."

"I wish I was Park Miyoung. She's got the hottest guy in school staring at her, yet she doesn't even care."

I grit my teeth and clench my fists.

I turn around. "You guys better get out of here before I beat all of your asses up."

They looked at me with widened eyes, whispering we're in trouble to each other before scurrying off.

Was he really looking at me the entire game? I didn't notice, probably because I was talking to Taehyung mainly the entire time.

Plus, that one Mina girl was most likely right. He could have easily been looking at anyone else around my area, not necessarily me.

Footsteps were heard from across the court. I look up to see Jungkook running to me, his basketball bag gripped tightly on his arm.

When he reached me, he put his hands on his thighs as he bent down to catch some air. "I was sure you had left."

"Well I'm here, aren't I?" I say cockily, standing up in front of him.

Jungkook licks his bottom lip and smirks at me. "Yeah. . . Yeah you are. Let's go?"

"Let's go."
