《Seeing Red》All is not as it seems

"You are here to pick up Mia, yes?" Her teacher approached me.

"Yes, I'm here for Mia!" I smiled giving Mia my hand, she took it and came stood next to me.

"We need to talk about her behaviour at school, please let her parents know I'm going to have to schedule a meeting with them."

"Okay, I'll let them know."

We started walking to the salon, Mia looked like a sweet child I don't understand why her teacher said that. She was a happy child, skipping along the sidewalk and humming a song. We walked into the salon, Pascale handed me the keys and I told her what the teacher said.

"Only one complaint today?" She asked.

"Yeah, she looked very worried though."

"That's an improvement! We'll talk about it later."

I said okay and walked with Mia to their apartment, she had not spoken a word to me but just simply clung on to my hand. I opened the door and she sprinted in! Throwing her little backpack on the floor kicking her shoes off and running straight insisde.

I walked in, picking up after her, putting the backpack up right and placing the shoes. I heard a few thuds and bangs, I ran into the kitchen to see what was happening. She was standing on the kitchen counter, trying to open a cabinet.

"Mia! Get down that is so dangerous!" I yelped.

She looked at me and stomped her foot on the counter, she had a menacing smirk on her face. Oh God! This can't be the kid I picked up from school, I asked her to get down from the counter, I could not have her split her head open in the first 30 minutes of looking after her.

"You listen to me very carefully now! We are in MY house, I am the boss now!" She smirked with her arms crossed at her chest.

"Okay Mia, you are the boss now but I have to take care of you-"

"Stop speaking my slave! And hand me that jar!" She pointed at the jar full of candies in the cabinet.

My slave, I was not going to let a five year old child get away with calling me a slave. This was unacceptable! I realised this kid was a literal brat.

"No. I'm not doing that for you." I said sternly, with my hands on my hips.

"Do it! Do it right now!" She cried throwing a fit and and kicking around still on top of the counter.

Her foot slipped, she let out a yelp. My heart froze in that moment, I dived right under and caught hold of her before she could fall and hit the ground. Her eyes were widened, she was shaken and fell extremely quiet.

"Are you ever going to do that again?" I asked her after making her sit down on a chair.

"No I won't." She let out a little sniffle.

"Your Grandma made you a snack, eat that and then I'll let you pick a candy from your candy jar."

She ate her sandwich in peace, we did her homework together and then as promised I let her eat some candy. That peaceful cooperation was short lived, she was back on her feet, running through the house like a little tornado.

"It's time for my favourite show! Switch on the TV new slave!" She yelled hopping on the couch, and then running on it.

I didn't move, I was not going to get walked all over by a 5 year old. Right when she leaped to grab the remote, I snatched it away and held it high up so she couldn't reach it.

"Don't call me slave, I'm here to look after you and I'm trying to be your friend but you're making it awfully hard." I began.

"You are my-"

"Not another word Mia. I have a name, it's Tara. I think you're quite a big girl and can say my name, that's what grown ups do." I said hoping it would pique her interest, all little kids want to be grown ups for some reason.

"Really? Grown ups call people by their names?" She asked.

"Yeah! They call their friends by their names, that's why I call you Mia." I smiled.

"You're my friend? Not my boss?"

"Nope, not your slave or boss. Your friend."

"Good! Because being a boss is so Tiring, can I get some juice?" She asked finally sitting down on the couch.

"Yes, I can get you some juice, provided you stay put." I said walking to the kitchen to get some juice for her.

We spent the evening watching TV, going to the park for a walk and readying her bed so she could crawl in after dinner.

After Pascale was home, I started on my walk home. I'm pretty sure I saw Nico Rosberg on an evening stroll but never mind, I had to get back and start dinner.

Dinner was ready and Harriet was back from a very tiring shift at the kitchen, I set the table for us to eat. We talked about how our days had been, I told her about the tough time Mia managed to give me.

"You got called slave by a kid!" She burst into peals of laughter.

"It's not funny! But I think I've put her in her place." I smiled.

We were exhausted and headed to sleep early, I had a job and a routine to follow now!

I couldn't be more wrong about have managing to discipline the child in one day, turns out that's not how it works. Throughout the week, she managed to create messes that I didn't know were possible.

On the bright side, she referred to me as friend Tara and not slave. She was still learning how to accept and react to the word no, not many people had ever said no to her.

It was Friday afternoon, we sat at the table colouring drawings because that's what she wanted to do to celebrate her weekend.

"Tara, you are my friend right?"

"Yes I am!"

"Will you come to my birthday party this Sunday?"

"Sure! I'll have to ask-"

"My grandma can talk to your mum! It'll be fun! My slaves will be coming too!"

"Your slaves? We talked about this Mia." I shook my head.

"Yes we did, you are my friend. Sara, Amelia and Claire are my slaves, Emil is coming too but he's not my favourite." She rambled on.

"Okay, I'll be there. I'll talk to your grandma."

"You know I'm really excited for one more thing!" She beamed.

"Really? What is it?"

"Papa's going to be home! I'm going to se him after so long!"

"That's awesome!"

"Look! I drew him and me!" She held up her drawing for me to see.

As it brings happiness to every child, I placed her drawing on the fridge. Yet another day well spent, my social life was growing! I was invited to a party.

"Hello girls! Did you tell her about your party?" Pascale walked into the house.

"Yes, she did." I smiled.

"She's grown very fond of you now, you must come!"

"I will of course! Since I'm potentially the only adult guest, can I come a little earlier to help you set up?" I offered.

"My sons will be here, no need!"

"No, I insist!"

"Okay then! Be here by 11 am on Sunday, we'll start setting up for her party."

I got home all cheery and happy to tell Harriet about my blossoming social life, today for a change she was back earlier than I was.

"Guess who got invited to a party!"

"No way! Where is it? What time?" She fired away questions.

"It's on Sunday, in Pascale's apartment."

"Oh." She looked at me in confusion.

"Yeah, I've been invited to Mia's birthday. Along with other cool kids like Sara and there's Emil too but she's not very fond of him." I laughed.

"Oh damn! I wish I was you." She laughed sarcastically.

As much as she was going to make fun of me for being excited for going to Mia's sixth birthday, I wasn't going to lie! I really was excited, it made me happy knowing that just over a week she had grown fond of me. I was now in the second week of being her sitter and she was warming up to me, I was starting to love this kid after all.
