《chains | anidala》journey

They left late that night. Padmé said her final goodbyes to the twins and left them in the protection of one of the rebel nurses. She didn't want to, but leaving them in a safe hiding place was better than bringing them on a mission to find their father. If Anakin hurt either of them, she didn't know what she would do. She'd already lost him, she couldn't lose the only other people she loved.

Padmé had lost faith in Anakin. She didn't believe that Obi-wan's plan would work, but he'd insisted. However, what he said made sense. If anyone was able to convince Anakin what he was doing was wrong, it was Padmé. Obi-wan assumed that since the two were apart, Anakin might feel differently about the Sith. Especially since he'd attempted to execute his wife. However, Padmé saw things differently. She felt that Anakin's hatred for the Rebels would increase since she left. She'd figured that he would blame them for her disappearance. He probably thought that Obi-wan Obi-wan kidnapped Padmé.

Nevertheless, the two sat quietly in the small ship that Obi-wan had chosen. Padmé had finally agreed to come. After much internal conflict, the girl decided that she had to try one final time. Anakin was her husband, and she had vowed to take care of him for the rest of her life. She decided that if there was any Anakin left in the man, she'd take care of him. It was her job, after all. She didn't believe her vows were meant to be taken lightly.

Obi-wan cautiously pulled out from the underground landing area. He kept the cannon of the ship aimed, ready to shoot the second something moved.

"Why are we located in Coruscant?" Padmé asked, "Isn't the base too obvious?"

"We figured the last place Palpatine would search would be near the Jedi Temple. It's risky, but because the population saw first hand what happened, we have been able to gather more people for our cause."

She nodded her head, although she still thought it was risky. She bit her lip as Obi-wan guided the ship in between buildings. Although the dark gave them an advantage, it also acted as a disadvantage. Padmé had to squint to notice the figures below. So far no one seemed to pay attention to them.

Once Obi-wan brought the ship to the most rural part of Coruscant, he pulled the ship up. It zipped through the air, going as quickly as it could. Padmé closed her days, thinking of the twins. She'd left them behind. What if something happened to them while she was gone? What if something happened to her? Who would take care of them? The only people in the rebel base that she knew were past colleagues. She'd never expect them to take care of her children.

"Damn!" Obi-wan shouted.

Padmé flinched, "What?"

The ship clung to the side, shuddering. A cloud of smoke was visible through the window.

"They spotted us."

The shot was followed by others, but Obi-wan avoided them. He jerked the ship to the side multiple times. Padmé grinded her teeth.

Three small ships trailed behind them, aiming their shots at them. Padmé gripped the handles of her chair intensely, her chest tightened. She held her breath.

Obi-wan drove through the atmosphere, the ships continued their pursuit.

"Do you know how to operate the cannons?" he asked, surprisingly calmy.

"I think so," she replied.

"I'm going to turn the ship around, and you're going to shoot them. Make sense?"

Padmé nodded, taking hold of the controls. She let her finger hover over the trigger. "Go."

The ship halted to a stop, then quickly whipped around. Padmé aimed at the enemy, one by one picking them off. They smoked, then exploded into flames.

When Obi-wan turned their vehicle around, he was greeted by Padmé's grin.

"Did you see that?!" she shouted, enthrilled.

"I did," he laughed.

"That was amazing," she smiled. Then suddenly she regained her composure, remembering that she was on a mission. She wasn't fooling around with Anakin. This was Jedi Master Obi-wan Kenobi. "I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"I should be more professional," she explained. "I haven't been in the field for a long time. My apologies."

He smiled at her, "It sounds like you needed that. Don't worry, it's just me."

She nodded her head. "I haven't had fun in a long time," she confessed.

"I haven't either," he replied. "We are in stressful times."

Padmé turned to Obi-wan, "Can I ask you a question?"

"Of course. What is it?"

She drew a deep breath, then asked, "Why are you doing this?"

"Trying to save Anakin?"

"Yes," she continued, "I don't understand. Why are you sparing him? Why would you go against the Jedi council's decision to kill him? You should be angry, but you're not. He went against an entire life of training with you and stabbed you in the back. He thinks you're evil. He told you he hates you. He wants to kill you."

"Because I love him," he stated.

"But I love him too," she told him. "I don't have as much faith in him as you do."

"Look," Obi-wan told her, "If I die, am cast away, or lose my Jedi status because I revert Anakin back to the light... I say I've done my job in life."

Padmé sighed, she ran her hands through her hair. She was silent for a long time, processing what Obi-wan had said. It was why she admired him. He was such a good man.

"Obi-wan?" she finally said.

"Yes, Padmé?"

"Are we friends?"

He grinned, touching her arm. "Yes, we're friends."

Obi-wan began to descend the ship, "We're here."

Padmé squinted, the closer they got to the planet, the brighter their sorroundings became. She was confused as she recognized the sandy terrain.

"Tatooine?

Obi-wan answered, "Yes. He's staying with his mother's family."

Shock filled Padmé's lungs, "Really? He hates it here."

"I don't blame him. He has no where else to go. They don't know a lot around here anyways."

Within minutes, the ship had landed on the ground. Obi-wan opened the door, dust spat at their faces. Padmé rushed to the ground, stretching her legs.

"What's our plan?" she asked him. The two began to walk.

"We are quite a bit away from his house," he explained, "I don't want him running. It took me about an hour to walk to him yesterday. We'll walk together, but I think you should approach him alone. He will feel threatened if I come with you."

"But last time-"

"Talk to him rationally," he said, "If he is calm, you can tell me about him. If it takes you a few days, I will be okay waiting for you. I won't let him hurt you, I promise."

"I don't think he will listen to me," she told him.

"It's worth a try. Don't give up hope yet. This whole rebellion is built on hope, we can't lose it."

Padmé and Obi-wan made small talk as they continued on with their journey. He told her his stories and she answered his questions about her and Anakin's relationship. He was still shocked that he hadn't figured it out in the three years they'd been together.

The familiar stone structure came into view in what seemed like forever later. There was nothing around them. Padmé rejoiced at the site of civilization.

Her heart dropped when she realized what civilization entailed. With sweaty palms, Padmé split ways with Obi-wan.

She closed her eyes, silently praying for what came next. She didn't know what she wanted. She didn't know what to expect.

When her eyes fluttered opened, she noticed a figure in the distance. He was dressed in a tan peasant outfit. His thick robe clung to his skin. His long, curly hair covered half of his face. Her heart stopped.

Anakin.
