《Keeping His Secret》It's Mia.

"Good morning Amelia." Mrs Kinkle smiled at me in-genuinely the second I walked into her classroom. I dreaded English lit all day for this exact reason, somehow I felt like her knowing that I didn't like to be called by my full title made her call me it all the more.
"It's Mia." I corrected for the billionth time. She ignored me. I sat in my usual seat, the girl next to me who I learned was called Becca gave me her customary dirty look.
Mrs Kinkle carted out the television on the trolley and pushed in the vintage VCR tape. The screen sprung to life with more Jane Austen bullshit. I pulled out my science note book and started writing up my homework assignment in order to get it out the way and avoid doing it in my own time at home.
"Psst, princess." The lanky guy from behind called out to me. I turned in my chair to face him.
"Are you talking to me?" I asked sarcastically. He gave me a blank expression.
"Yeah? Do you see any other princesses around here?" He asked. I rolled my eyes and began to turn back around to face the front, committing myself to ignoring whoever calls me a princess in future. "Sick game of dodgeball today." He complimented, earning me enough reason to stay facing him. "But aren't you like, scared?" He questioned.
"Amelia, the television is this way." Mrs Kinkle interrupted.
"It's Mia." I replied with aggression. The grip on my pencil getting tighter as I imagined it was my teachers neck. I faced the television once more, droning out with the boring old English context.
"Why would she be frightened?" Becca asked him after a few minutes of Pride and prejudice. I tried not to turn around again but it was kind of hard when you could hear two people were having a conversation about you, without you.
"She smacked Noah with a ball." He admitted with dramatic horror in his voice as if he were talking up a thrilling movie trailer.

"Noah speaks to her." Becca whispered. "Apparently." She added, implying that I were lying about my conversations with Noah.
Why would I even do that?
"Has spoken to me, yes. Does he speak to me, no. We're not friends." I clarified.
"Woah!" The tall guy said in shock.
"Amelia!" My whole body shuddered as I cringed at the harsh word on her lips. I wanted to leap across the classroom and rag her around by her scrawny little grey hair. But I refrained, talking myself into calmness.
"It's Mia." I said once more. We all went back to watching Mr Darcy chase Elizabeth and it wasn't even the movie version were he was attractive.
"So did he kill them then?" The guy asked again, determined to get me into trouble. This teacher knew that this conversation was a three way street, yet she only had the courtesy to blame one participant.
"I don't know." I admitted.
"He did." Becca clarified with a sure nod like she knew all the answers.
"Fuck, I bet he did as well." The guy chimed in.
"Amelia this is the last time I'm going to tel-"
"Mia! It's Mia! It's fucking Mia!" I screamed. I snapped my pencil in half and slammed it down on the desk. "How fucking hard is it to get my name right? You dumb fucking bitch! Mia! Mia! Me ya! It's really not that hard!"
Every startled face in the room sat staring at me in silence, including Mrs Kinkles. I breathed rapidly, holding my hands tightly squeezed into fists to release some of my outpouring vexation.
"Fuck no wonder she got him good today, She's fearless." I heard the guy behind me whisper but this time I didn't turn around to face him because my eyes were already burning into the teachers scalp, hoping to set her ablaze.
"Mia." She cleared her throat. "You've just earned yourself detention after school." She said quietly. I inhaled deeply and then exhaled, at least she finally respected my wishes and got my name correct even if it did mean another hour long detention after school. "Go get yourself a detention slip." I stood up and grabbed my bag, intertwining myself between the desks until I reached the door and then I slammed it closed behind me letting everybody feel the toxic mood I was in.

I lined up at the secretary's office and waited to be handed my second pink slip of this week. The curly haired secretary smiled at me sheepishly.
"Detention on a Thursday, that never happens. You must've really ticked off your teacher." She joked. I faked a sarcastic laugh at her and her smile faded into a frown. Then she handed me the pink slip and I walked away, making a pit stop at the toilets just to prolong not being around Mrs Kinkle for longer.
I sat on the toilet and pulled out my phone, opening up my text message chain to my mom.
I laughed at her reply. Funnily enough my mom has never needed to be a mom, she doesn't even know how to parent. If I texted Merida my nanny that same message she wouldn't accept it as a reasonable answer. She would want to know where I am, what I'm doing, who I'm with, when I'll be back and sometimes, most of the time she would even say no. My mom doesn't set me boundaries, she doesn't give me punishments and she expects nothing from me.
In a way, over the course of the past few months my mom and I have been getting to know one another. Before now we've been two strangers, living under the same room and passing one another in the hallway. I looked good on the family Christmas cards but to hold a conversation with me was something nobody even contemplated as an option.
I returned back to the hellzone of Mrs Kinkles classroom, just in time for the end of day bell to ring.
"We will move this into the library Am— Mia." She corrected herself. I followed her through the corridors and sat with her in the library.
For one whole hour she didn't let me read, she didn't let me talk or finish any of my homework assignments, she didn't let me study. I had nothing to do besides sit in tedious utter boredom, twiddling my thumbs and watching the clock tick by. It made the time go ridiculously slow. I was the only one here besides the teachers and library staff. Apparently at Bell View detentions are only held on a Tuesday after school, apparently I was special enough for them to make an exception.
I counted down the last sixty seconds in my brain as I watched the hands on the clock tick down.
"It's been an hour!" I exclaimed loudly, jumping up out of my seat. Mrs Kinkle glanced at the clock, looking up from whatever book she had chosen to read.
"So it has Mia." She admitted.
I'm pretty sure mrs Kinkle and I were the last ones to leave the building because she locked up on the way out. I walked halfway home, in the darkness before I realized I had left my jacket. So very quickly I ran back hoping to catch a late night janitor or some security guard.
I tugged on a chain through the main entrance door, hoping to grab someone's attention but nobody came so I walked around the grounds a few times looking for a member of the faculty. It was a Loro Piana jacket and there was no way I was leaving it there alone overnight, that thing is worth more than my life.
I noticed a window open to one of the ground floor history classrooms and without hesitation I climbed through it, using my phone to light the way towards my jacket.
