《Steam of Britain》Chapter 20: Seen and Not Heard

One of the branch lines had closed, and a station master was relocated to the mainline at Granthom. The engine that ran the Branchline was added to the Steam of Britain Fleet.

The station master watched trains go by, and he hated all the noise. Expresses going north to Scotland, and south to London, would whistle to let others know that they are coming. The engine, whose name was Arthur, worked hard, and found his life on the mainline a bit exciting. He pulled local trains, and loved the countryside, although an engine would come and thunder down the line every now and them.

Arthur soon came to Granthom, and said, "Hello Mr. Weston. Are you finding life on the mainline well?" "I am Arthur," he said, "Although, I do hate the noise." Just then, Mallard came racing through, whistling loudly. "It's absolutely ridiculous!" said Mr. Weston, "Engines don't need to whistle like maniacs!!" "But sir, they need to. It's-" "It's loud and completely unnecessary." Mr. Weston then headed to his office. The guard blew his whistle, and Arthur headed off.

That night, Arthur told the engines what Mr. Weston said. "We have to do it," said Mallard. "It's the safest thing to do when racing through a station," said Scotsman. "He needs to get used to the noise," said Silver Link, "This is the mainline, not a branchline." "I tried to tell him," said Arthur, "But he wouldn't listen." Perry then said, "Maybe he's just getting used to his new surroundings." "I don't know," said Arthur, "He's not doing the same as me."

For the rest of the week, Mallard, Flying Scotsman, and Silver Link all raced by the station, and would make as much noise as they could. Mr. Weston was starting to get annoyed very much. Soon, he came to the King's Cross round house, and said, "Listen here! You don't need to make such noise while going through my station!! It's completely annoying and unnecessary!!" "We have to!!" said Silver Link, "It's so we can warn people that we're coming!" "Engines should be seen and not heard!!" said Mr. Weston, "If I catch any of you making a racket in my station again, I will send a letter to your shed master to move you else where!!"

The engines took no notice. They continued to whistle as they raced through the stations. Until the Shed Master moved them elsewhere. Mallard was put on the Coronation with Duchess, Flying Scotsman was on mixed traffic duties with Steve, and Silver Link was on local duties. Rose, Barrow and Daniel took their trains. They weren't happy that they were taking the steam engine's jobs away. The diesels were much quieter, but even they received complaints. So, the three LNER engines were put back on their express duties.

At Granthom, there was a set of points that needed maintenance. The engines that haven't been condemned to Mr. Weston always let out a whistle to let them know they are coming, much to Mr. Weston's fury. Despite popular belief, engines, weather diesel or steam, can be very quiet at times, and work men can get so into their work, they miss the engines completely. Silver Link came running down the line, and he said to himself, "Fine, we'll do it his way."

When he came into view, he saw the workmen. "LOOK OUT!!!" yelled Silver Link.

Silver Link applied his brakes, the people on the platform yelled at the workmen, and Silver Link blew his whistle as loud as he could. He soon came to a halt, just centimeters from the workmen. Silver Link opened his eyes, and said, "Is anyone hurt?!" "What the blooming hell were you doing!?!" asked the foreman. Just then, Mr. Weston came storming out, and scolded, "WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT MAKING EXCESSIVE NOISE?!?!" "Have YOU got something to do with this?" asked the foreman, with gritted teeth. Silver Link explained, and the foreman glared at Mr. Weston. "IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT ENGINES WHISTLE TO WARN PEOPLE THAT THEY ARE COMING!!! YOU NEARLY COST ME SOME OF MY MEN, ALL BECAUSE YOU'RE AN OLD FUDDY DUDDY!!" Silver Link looked at Mr. Weston, and he looked very guilty. He couldn't help but sympathize. "Mr. Weston, I know you're not used to the noise, but if you can't take it, then maybe you're in the wrong place."

Mr. Weston decided to retire. He was in over his head. He now looks to the trains, and makes a motion for them to whistle. He also visits Silver Link very often, who helped him deal with his noise problem. Silver Link was happy to help.
