Aliyah's POV

"Hope everything is alright" he said eyeing Carson suspiciously. His dogs were growling uncontrollably at Carson

"Easy boys Easy boys"

"Yeah everything is fine, why don't you keep walking and mind you business" Carson spat rudely

I know what you're thinking. That Joe is this Fat old dude that keeps to himself and his dogs.

But that's quite the opposite.

He stared at me for longer and shaked his head

"I think not boy"

He said with his deep voice

He was really muscular, but not in a scary way.

"From the looks of things, she clearly doesn't want you around, so I think you should get walking boy" he finished calmly

Carson laughed

"Who the fuck do you think you are? She's my girlfriend so I have the right to be here" he barked

I scoffed

"I'm not your girlfriend Carson, and I have where I need to be so yeah, you need to get going" I said pulling his hand away from my car door.

He tried to stop me but in one swift move, using just one hand, Joe grabbed Carson's hand twisting it immediately.

He pulled him back

"I think we need to have a talk he said roughly"

"Ali you can get going now, I'll deal with this punk"

I nodded

"Thanks Joe" I said quickly getting into the car.

Carson is such a Jerk and a maniac. That doesn't matter to me right now. Being around Ava is all that matters. I want to be there for her every time, whenever she needs me.

When I got to Ava's house Mrs Davis was already setting up for Dinner. I excused myself and went up to check on Ava

She was still sound asleep. I guess she really meant it when she said today was going to be lights out.

I wasn't feeling hungry so I got comfortable on the bed picking up a novel laying on Ava's table

Few minutes into my reading I heard a light knock on the door, then Ben came in.

"Hey" he said grabbing a chair beside me

"Hey" I replied settling the book down

"What are you reading" he asked studying the cover of the book. He chuckled

"She always love reading that" he said gesturing to the book

"It's actually quite interesting" I laughed a little.

He smiled watching his sister sleep peacefully. They always act like they don't care about each other. But I can see how much he cares about her and how much she looks up to him. I may be be wrong

"Can I ask you something?"

"I hope you don't get mad" I asked

he laughed

"It depends on what you're asking"

I thought about it and swallowed hard. I hope I'm not out of place by this

"Why are you always so mean and closed off to Ava. I know it's not my place to ask but, I can't help it"

His gaze fell to the floor

"I mean" I continued

"the other day you stood up for her with Carson. To be honest I was surprised. What changed?"

He looked up, but never looking at me.

He passed his hands through his hair.

He looked conflicted. He played with his hands for a while. And then he finally spoke

"I don't know" he sounded weak and defeated.
