It was about a week later, and I was feeling a lot better. My cold was completely gone, but I hadn't healed in time to make it back to school before the holiday break. Luckily for me, most of my teachers decided I didn't need to complete the work I'd missed and I could just start a fresh leaf when the new year started. Today was December 23, the day that Jack's camp friends came, and more importantly, Finn's birthday. As much as Jack and I wanted to throw him a party, he wouldn't let us. Instead, he spent most of the day volunteering at the local animal shelter before we had to pick up his pals from the airport. Finn was genuinely the perfect guy. He was funny, charming, caring, kind, selfless, and beautiful. I might love him.
Jack, Ellie, and I were waiting at the airport for Finn and the crew. He was running a little late, seeing as he was supposed to be here twenty minutes ago. Finally he arrived, five minutes before his friends were set to land. He had walked up to us quietly and slipped his hand into mine, planting a kiss on my forehead. I rested my head on his shoulder.
"Get a room, losers," Ellie teased us. Ellie had been a lot nicer to me lately, and I might even dare as to call us friends.
"I'm so excited!" Jack cheered, pacing back and forth in front of the terminal.
"Me too," Finn agreed. "You'll love them," he whispered in my ear.
"I hope so."
"Weeaboo!" Jack shrieked suddenly. He sprinted at full speed into the arms of a tall brown haired boy, joined by an equally tall boy with wild curly hair. Behind them was a small girl with short red hair and a number of freckles, who was hugging Ellie, a darker complected, broader boy, and a shorter, plumper boy. The darker complected boy waved at me and Finn, becoming us over.

"Finn, my man. Happy Birthday, bro," the boy said, giving him a quick embrace. "And you must be the beautiful Madison I've heard so much about?" He said to me, reaching for my hand and bringing it to his lips.
"Chosen, right?" I asked him.
"So you've heard of me, huh," he said with a wink. The larger boy next to him rolled his eyes.
"Ignore him, he can't help being a fuckboy," the boy told me.
"You must be Jeremy." We shook hands.
"Hey, are you Madison?" The only girl in the group asked me. I nodded.
"Sophia, I'm assuming?" She confirmed with a warm smile.
"Have you met everyone yet?" She asked me. I shook my head. "Here, I'll introduce you." I looked at Finn to see if he would let me go off with Sophia or if he wanted me to stay with him. Sophia was my gaze and said, "Come on, he can manage a few minutes without his precious girl. Let's go." So Finn had told them about our relationship. I grinned and walked off with Sophia to Jack and the other boys, and Ellie trailed behind us. Jack was in a deep conversation with the tall brown haired boy, and the curly haired boy was standing off to the side rolling his eyes.
"Wyatt, meet the famous Madison," Sophia introduced me.
"Hey." He said cooly. I remembered Jack had told me Wyatt could appear cold at first and didn't take it personally.
"Hey Wy-Guy!" Ellie said from behind us. He gave her a small wave.
"Wyatt, don't be rude," Sophia scolded him. He rolled his eyes again, but he failed to hide a small smile. She gave his shoulder a soft punch before turning to the other boy, who I had decided was Jaeden.

"Hey Sophia," he said softly. "Hi Ellie. And hi Madison. Nice to meet you. Jack was just telling me about you," he said with the same soft tone. Jaeden was very adorable, I had to admit. In fact, all the boys here were very handsome, and Sophia was gorgeous. God, what did they put in the water at this camp.
"Should we go home?" Jack suggested to the group. Everyone agreed that was a good idea, and half of us piled into Jack's car, half of us into Ellie's. I sat next to Jack in the passenger's seat on the way to his house. He didn't speak to me once, he was too busy talking to his friends. I didn't mind at all. In fact, it was really nice to see Jack so happy. We ended up all hanging out at Jack's house, ordering pizza, and playing nintendo. Wyatt warmed up to me a bit after beating me in mario kart five times in a row. Sophia, Ellie and I made a cake for Finn's birthday, which was completely devoured about ten minutes after it was produced. Everyone was ready for bed before I had to leave.
"Wait, is there enough room for all of us to sleep here?" Jaeden asked Jack. Jack's house was pretty big, and we were all planning on sleeping in the basement, but it wasn't 9 people big.
"I can sleep at home, I live just across the street," I told them.
"I can sleep at Madison's house too." Finn piped up. "If that's ok with you," he added quickly. I suppose my parents wouldn't be too thrilled if I brought a boy over, but, I'm sure it would be fine.
"Alright." Finn gathered his stuff as the guests got ready for bed.
"Don't have too much fun," Jack winked. I rolled my eyes and the others laughed.
Turns out my mom was perfectly fine with Finn sleeping over, as long as she can check on us every so often, which was better than nothing. Finn didn't seem to mind either. We talked for a while and listened to some music. Finn sang me a new song his band was working on called "Under my Belt," and I have to say, it's pretty fucking good. He was sitting on my floor next to my bed in a sleeping bag, and I was lying in my bed hanging my head next to his.
"Did you have a nice birthday today?" I asked him.
"It was great. And being with you makes it 100 times more special." He kissed my cheek. My heart filled with warmth.
"Did you have fun volunteering?"
"Yeah, um, totally. It was so nice to see all those homeless people get food." Wait, homeless people? I thought he was volunteering at the animal shelter.
"I thought you went to the animal shelter today?" I sat up, confused.
"Oh! Right, yeah. I went to both actually. Ha. My bad," he said quickly.
"You really are perfect," I said before shutting off the lights and getting back into bed. "Goodnight, Finn."
"Goodnight, babe."

8 232Death By Protagonist
Donavan has made his living by wading through hundreds of stories in search of the quality few he and his firm believe to be worth publishing. After a strange twist of fate, he gets trapped inside the fantasy book of a particularly campy and amateur author. There he will have to navigate a world built on wish fulfillment, power fantasies, and fanservice in order to fix the story from the inside out if he ever wishes to leave. But can he bring himself to play the many roles necessary to manipulate and guide the characters to a satisfying conclusion? Authors Note: Death By Protagonist is meant to be simultaneously a satire of, and love letter to the isekai/portal fantasy genre. It both makes fun of and embraces many tropes of the genre such as harems, explicit sexual content, OP protagonists, and other things many people might think of as "trashy." If that doesn't sound like your thing, you've been warned, but I hope you'll give it a shot anyway. Update Schedule: Plan is to at least put out one new chapter every week, hopefully two.
