《Dancing In The Dark ✓》the reckoning

I call Diane once we've finished eating. The girl with the Marvel promo asks Jenny is she's alright as she walks past and Jenny lies right to her face.

"It's about Mr Granger," I explain. "Are you in today?"

"Wrapping up the case today actually." She pauses. "Eve, is this really important?"

I glance towards Jenny with her tired, red eyes and guilt building inside her, eating her alive.

"Really important."

When I tell Mom that we need to go to the station, she gives me a look. "Why? Is everything okay?"

I take a deep breath. "Jenny has something she needs to tell the officers and I promised I'd help her."

Mom sighs. "Okay then. Let's go."

She doesn't ask any questions though I know her eyes have already taken in Jenny's dishevelled appearance. She'll probably be on the phone to the Hartleys soon, informing them of the latest update.

"Do your parents know you're going to the station?" Mom asks.

"No," Jenny replies quietly. "I'll tell them myself if that's okay?"

Tell them that she killed a man.

The journey is quiet. Harry Styles is playing on the radio which is turned down so quiet you can barely hear it, a pleasant buzz breaking the icy silence.

"Want me to go in with you?" I ask as Mom parks.

Jenny nods. "Yes please."

We get out of the car. I give Jenny a quick hug and she clings to me like a little kid, still shaking like she was in the restaurant. Mom follows us, stuffing her car keys into her pocket, oblivious of what Jenny's about to do.

She'll ruin her life. Be branded a murderer forever. A cold-blooded killer. Sure she was fuelled by grief and anxiety and sadness, but she killed a man.

"You can do it," I whisper as we wait for Diane. "Be brave, okay?"

"Jennifer?" It isn't Diane, it's Mitch. "What would you like to tell us?"

"I killed Mr Granger." Her voice is cracking.

Mitch's eyes widen. Mom gasps. Even the receptionist with the breathy voice lets out a confused noise. Because she couldn't possibly have killed Granger. This sweet girl who lost her brother. This girl who does girl guides and netball and dance. This girl couldn't have killed a man so easily, forming a plan in the school toilets during third period and lunch.

"You better come with me," Mitch says quietly. "We're going to have to call your parents. And Eve, you stay too."

And here's what happens.

The Hartley parents show up, confused and shocked when they find out. I tell my story three times over, recounting how Jenny confessed to me until my voice is hoarse. I go home. I cry for a while over my Biology revision guide.

And I don't see Jenny again. Her fate is being decided in the cold rooms of the police station, with her sadness filled parents on either side of her.

And while that happens I'm still here.

Jenny Hartley and Eden Davis both killed someone. Josh and Mr Granger are both dead. Countless lives have been touched by those deaths, by those innocent girls turned killers because of one man's infidelity.

But tomorrow I'll be doing my exam. And the world will keep spinning.
