《GCSE Language P1&2 Q5》Paper 2 Question 5: Environment Prompt

Would you want to live in a post-apocalyptic wasteland? A world ravaged by torrents of water intent on drowning any unfortunate soul it can? A world where every week your house, school and livelihood are under siege from an artillery of wind, waves and winter forces? All of these are simply possibilities of a future where we don't protect our environment. Just harmless little possibilities dreamed up by a bored student in an English exam. Simple little possibilities...

...Well, for now at least.

We are killing our planet. Just accept it. We mass-produce hundreds of tons of plastic, petrol and produce, sending out thousands of tons of greenhouse gases. We live in a society built on the foundations of exploiting our environment for economical gain. This has to stop.

Unfortunately, we don't have the best people leading our countries. The President of the United States is a hypocritical global-warming denier after all! Fortunately, we have tens of thousands of documents proving global warming. The greenhouse gases reflect heat back to Earth which heat up the world and melt the ice caps, raising sea levels worldwide. The evidence is there in black, white and any other colour you could imagine. However, the consequences of our technological advances are the cause.

In a world ransacked by continuous war threats, wildfires and woe, it won't get any easier. Due to global warming and the ice caps melting, sea levels WILL rise. Studies show that within forty years, holiday destinations like the Maldives and Seychelles will be underwater, Better get that holiday booked, am I right? These increased sea temperatures will raise some areas to over 27'C which means one thing.

Hurricanes!

As the temperatures rise, hurricanes, typhoons and any other name for them will increase in size, force, amount and places they can hit. A study by the Met Office shows that if global warming isn't stopped, we could experience full force hurricanes within the next 25 years. That's a scary thought. Those disasters in Florida and the Caribbean hitting Cornwall and the Channel Islands? The United Kingdom is a lot smaller than the US as well, so they could cause devastating damage to the entirety of our humble lump of rock.

On a final note, think of the animals. If we don't protect our environment, many species will go extinct. Due to global warming, the fires in Australia have been burning for weeks and the animals are suffering. Koalas are now critically endangered, and elsewhere polar bears are dying in large numbers due to the ice caps melting and not having anywhere to hunt from. As a closing statement, I propose this final warning: In a world run by ignorance and economical gain, will you join me in the fight against climate change?
