《The Lies and the Lives of the Taken》Frank 6

I get back to my apartment and shut the door behind me. It's quiet and the bowl on the coffee table where we keep our keys is empty. Jenna isn't here. And her shoes aren't in their spot. She probably went out, well, she definitely went out, but will probably be back soon.

I walk through the living room and go to my room, throwing myself on my bed. Was that a date? I mean, nothing really happened between the two of us. He did pay for my thought, which was very nice. We left after dinner, parting our ways at the restaurant. I had a really great time, I wish it lasted longer, we didn't run out of things to say. It was a bit awkward at first, not sure how to start the conversation but after a while, it was great. We talked about everything, what we did in high school, weird childhood memories, family traditions that are out of the norm. I did feel bad when I asked him about his parents. I really can't imagine what that must have been like. He was really young and afterward, he just had his grandmother and his brother but halfway through college, his grandmother passed away a couple years ago so now all he has is his brother. I felt like an idiot for bringing that up, even though I had no idea. It's behind me now.

The front door opens and I hear a heavy sigh followed by keys clattering in the bowl. Jenna's back. Getting up, I step out of the room and glance at her. She's kicking her shoes off slowly, sighing again. "Hey," I say.

She looks up and her face lightens up. "Hi, Frank, you're back." Her voice is a bit broken.

I start walking over toward her. "Yeah, just got back. Where did you go?"

"Uh, just...Jakob's place," she mutters.

I was worried that's where she went. "Why?" I ask. she shakes her head, giving a shrug. "You don't need to be with him anymore."

"No, he's a good person, it's just, there's a lot going on and-"

"You know he's cheating on you," I say. It shuts her down. It's not like I bring up anything new to her. Nothing new whatsoever. She knows her boyfriend is a terrible person. She knows he's a drunk and basically takes advantage of her. He cheats on her, lies to her, makes her feel terrible. And she has to lie to him. She pretends that she lives alone because when he found out we were living together, he blew up on her. He never likes coming over to her place anyway since it's small, so it's not like he'll find out she's lying about me moving out. For some reason, she's convinced that he's the only one that will ever love her and no matter how close I get or how hard I try, she doesn't leave him.

"It doesn't matter," she mutters. "I'm-I need to eat."

"Jen, it's 10 o'clock almost," I point out. She wanders into the kitchen and grabs leftovers from the fridge. She doesn't say anything, tipping around the kitchen. "You drink?"

"Little bit," she mutters. "Made it easier to stand it." I sigh, leaning against the door frame of the kitchen and looking at her concerned. "It's going to be okay."

"It can be right now," I say. "You don't have to see him anymore. Just don't go back."

"It's not that easy," she says. "I can take care of myself. And he's not that bad, he doesn't hurt me or anything." I know that. The second he lays a hand on her, I'm calling the police on him. "Just, enough about me. How was dinner?" she asks.

I smile a bit, dropping the subject for now. We'll talk about this later when she's a little more coherent. "It was good, went really well. We were out for like 2 and a half hours, it was crazy. He's busy tomorrow so he said we can meet up another time."

"Clearly, he thought it went well if he's agreed to seeing you again."

"I know, right?"

"So was it like a date?" she asks.

I hesitate for a moment. "It kind of felt like one and I want to say it was but I don't think he would. I'm just going to see where this goes and hopefully it turns into something. Maybe."

"Well, first, let me ask, is he interested in guys at all? If not, it's all just a moot point."

I start chuckling a bit. "Actually, I asked him at the hospital and he said he didn't know. He's never dated anyone." Jenna tilts her head to the side, narrowing her eyes. "Yeah, I know. And believe me, if you knew what he looked like, you would be even more surprised."

"Well, you'll have to introduce me to him sometime," Jenna says. "You think that'll happen or no?"

"I mean, maybe. Probably not like soon or anything but if we keep talking, totally." She smiles softly. Am I getting ahead of myself here? I mean, I kind of like him but is it too soon to say that? This is the second day we've really been together as in face to face. Am I blowing this out of proportions here or am I normal about this? I did save the guy, granted, it wasn't because I thought he was cute and some fairy tale thing would happen. I don't know why I saved him, it was really stupid and dangerous. But honestly, no matter who it was, I would have done the same thing I did to Gerard.
